Leaking Nuby sippy cup

Posted Tue December 21, 2004, by Angela G. written to Luv n' care, Ltd.

Write a Letter to this Company

I'm sure you know how important your products are to the people who buy them, so I hope you are willing to take seriously my complaint about your company's performance. My complaint concerns Nuby soft spout cup.

Hello
I am writing about the Nuby sippy cups. Since I weaned my son from the bottle and heard from a friend that by starting him on a nuby cup is the best transition from bottle to cup, I decided to give them a try. I purchased one cup from Walmart two months ago. I was very pleased with the cup for about a month until it started leaking when the cup was on it's side. I could not do anything with the cup except throw it away. I had heard very good things about your company so I decided to give the cup another try. I purchased another one from Walmart and it leaked as soon as I put milk in the cup. So I returned to Walmart to exchange the cup. I am now on my third Nuby cup....and it is leaking as well. I keep a very close eye on my son when he is drinking out of his cup or eating so I know this leak is not the result of wear and tear. My son drinks out of the cup, and that is all. I would like to know if you are having similar problems and what can be done about the leaking cups. I do not put warm or hot fluids in the cup. They do not go in the dishwasher and they are washed in luke warm water.

Thank you
Angela

As a result of this, I don't know whether I would buy from your company again, and I don't think I can recommend you to others that I know.

Here's what I'd like to see happen: I would like to know what can be done about the cups since I cannot return them to the store.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Your prompt attention to this letter would be greatly appreciated.

I have not had the same problem with the nuby sippy cup leaking. My
son is ready for sippy cup and i had heard that the nuby cups were
the best. So i went and bought one brought it home and gave my son
some milk. He was drinking out of it fine and he accidently dropped
it. I picked the cup up noticing there was milk on the floor i looked
for the leak it was coming from the hole in the side of it. Thinking
that there was probably just something wrong with that particular cup
i went and purchased another one. The same thing happened my son
accidently dropped it it broke at the bottom of it again. a hole in
the side. I am very disappointed in the fact that these cups are
really not made well. In both cups there are holes in them. These cups
didn't even last five minutes. I cant get a hold of anyone at luv
ncare 1800 number. I will never buy these again its like wasting
money. I would like to know what can be done about this cup since i
cannot return it to the store.

I have a recent horror story about a brand new sippy cup from ths
company. I had to make an enexpected trip about an hour long. Since I
was just out for a quick errand when this unexpected trip came up,I
did not have anythin for my son in the car and it was almost his
naptime. So I decided to stop at CVS to purchase a sippy cup and some
milk for my son (21months old). I rinsed the cup out with a bottle of
water I had in my car and filled it with milk. I gave it to my son who
was very relieved to see it.
I started my trip, as soon as I hoppe on the freeway my son started
wining. I turned around to see milk all over him, the cup was leaking
from the seal. As much as I hate doing this, I pulled over on the
freeway to fix it. I cleaned up what I could with some tissue I had in
my car and screwed the cap back on and shook it to make sure it was
sealed and not leaking anymore. I gave it back to my son after his
mild freakout.
Once again, I started back on our trip. Not even 5 minutes later,
he starts crying again. This time the leak was more like a spill.
There was milk all over my son, his carseat and my car. Despite having
about 45 minutes left in the car, I had to take the cup away from him.
He could see it in my cup holder but I could not give it to him for
fear that it would cause an even bigger mess. He screamed bloody
murder for the rest of the trip!
When we FINALLY got home I threw the cup in the dumpster outside of
my apartment complex. I wiped up and cleaned the carpet with a cleaner
for cat urine ( the only kind I had). The next day I got into my car
and it smelled like something had died in there! So needless to say,
This 7$ sippy cup ended up costing me a migraine headache from my sons
desperate cries for his sippy cup, and a 60$ carpet cleaning! I am
truely dissapointed in the product! I will be findind a new brand to
use from now on for fear of another horrible experience.

Sincerely, Alicia

Geez I wish I'd seen this months ago! I am very sad and dissappointed
that this has obviously been an issue for YEARS! I will NEVER again
buy these cups and let everyone I know having a baby or with a small
child to do the same. Maybe word of mouth will keep others from
making my same mistake...

I have been looking for a place to post a comment to the company about
their horrible product. My daughter has been using Munckin cups since
she was 6 months old and they are GREAT but I needed more. My husband
thought we should try something else and saw that it held more oz than
the munckin so we bought the nuby soft spout and they leaked as soon
as I put something in it and the "nipple" caves in as soon as she
takes a drink and it will not reform itself unless you loosen the cap.
These cups totally blow and I will not recommend them to ANYONE. I
hope the company gets ahold of this. Your product is TERRIBLE.

I had bought the Sport sipper for my 11 month old son from wal-mart as
well. I must say, I will never buy another nuby product again because
of this one. The first time I put juice in it it leaked EVERYWHERE!!
I tried to figure out what was wrong, I didn't want to blame the
manufacturer. But after about 3 weeks of trying to use it with my
son, I figured out that the cover for the cup had to be on JUST RIGHT
otherwise it was going to leak. Leaving me standing in the kitchen
twisting the cover and tipping the cup to multiple times until I got
the cover sitting just right. Last night I gave him his cup with
dinner...I had checked it and double checked it because I had fruit
punch in his cup. I have BEIGE CARPETS!!! I had to make sure it
wasn't going to leak. I was happy because all though dinner it worked
just fine. Then he dropped it on the floor and all the juice came
POURING OUT! Red, ALL OVER MY CARPET!! I am not happy. For being a
SPILL PROOF SPORTS CUP I expected this cup to be worth the $4 I spent
on it. It has been nothing but a nightmare and an additional cost to
my expenses btwn cleaning and stain removing.

I am NOT happy with this product and I would also love to find out
where I need to go or what needs to be done about this. I wouldn't
mind a replacement, but seeing as the cup I got should have been a
stronger cup(sports sippy) I don't know if I want to try any other
nuby products. At this point I just want to return it to the
manufacturer as defective and leave it at that.

Sincerely,
A very UN-satisfied customer

My son loves these cups too. I have a couple suggestions for you!
After buying cup after cup of the cheapo grippers, I noticed there was
a two pack of the same cup only with a wider top, and insulated, and I
thought you know maybe the lids are easier on these ones. The main
problem with the grippers is that you have to turn them really
carefully and line them up just right in order for them not to leak
out of the lid. I use the wide mouthed cups now and they basically
never leak out of the lid, but after a while of having them and some
wear and tear, the silicone spout starts coming apart and then it
leaks out of that. I've been buying him new cups but then I thought I
could just get the replacement spouts and I found the ones for the
wide tops at goodforthekids.com (sorry after all the replies from
them it sounds like an advertisement, doesn't it? I just found them
though, they were the only ones who sold them). They are... I think
like 1.65 each and well basically I got 10 of them for just under $20
bucks, including the shipping. I could definitely not get 10 of the
cups for under $20. I thought it was pretty cool and convenient. But I
don't know, when you think about it any kind of silicone thing a baby
chews/sucks on doesn't last all that long anyway. Nipples and
pacifiers and that. You can't expect them to be incredibly durable, if
that's what matters most to you then you need to buy the hard spouted
cups. What's more important to you - how long it lasts, or how
comfortable your child is with it? If it's the lasting, get the hard
spouted sippy cups and stop complaining about something soft enough to
get chewed up, getting chewed up. The lids however are crappy on the
grippers, and I would go with the insulated wide mouthed cups in that
case.

I have had the same problem. These cups are great for transitioning
the child but they are not something you can continue to use as they
are JUNK!! They all leak. I was dumb and bought several and I would be
imbarrassed to return them all to WALMART but I have thought about
it....

I'm not quite sure why you are having so many problems with your sippy
cup leaking. We have used at least 20 cups in the past two months,
the 10 oz Nuby sippy gripper cups and the only time they have leaked
is when we didn't put the lid on correctly and didn't line up the
grooves and notches on the spout with the lid.

If you are filling the cup with formula or juice and are shaking it,
you should be able to tell where the leak is coming from. I have
tried to make the cups leak and they still don't leak.

It's possible that the batch you bought your sippy cups from at
Walmart may have been defective. You might want to try writing
directly to Luv n Care, the manufacturer of Nuby Sippy Cups or calling
them at:

2805 Saint Charles Ave
Monroe, LA 71201
(318) 388-4916

They have always been courteous and helpful to me.

In fact, my family and I like Nuby products so well that we now
promote them at : http://www.nubysippycup.com

Hope this helped.

When I contacted Luv'ncare about my problems, they immediately emailed
me with an address to send my cups back and they sent out a check
within a couple of weeks. I've now owned about 60 of these things, so
let me explain.
WHat many people don't realize is that the slits in the nipple
sometimes tear, ever so slightly, causing the nipple to leak. ALSO,
many kids clench the nipple between their teeth (much like a pacifer)
without sucking, causing leaks. The nipple does bunch if over
tightened and the caps sometimes twist crooked causing spillages.
DISHWASHERS cause some kind of misshaping sometimes where the caps
won't lock right, why I don't know, but it happens. Otherwise, my kids
won't take anything else, so I continue to buy them. On vacation, my
daughter lost her cup, we went to a local store who of course didn't
carry them. SHe cried and fussed all night (lucky me)!

I also have these cups and when I started buying them for my son that
is now 4 they were 99 cents now I buy them for my 2 year old son and
they are 1.97 each. Yes they leak but my son likes them because they
are soft. I went to buy replacement spouts and they are 3.50 for a
set of 2. For the 25 cents I am saving per cup I will just buy new
ones. I think the company should offer the replacement spouts for a
cheaper price since they start leaking so fast, and why the big
increase in price?

I have a few of these. My son chews on them and eventually the slits
break. Then more comes out and they leak. But I figure this way he
learns to take more fluid at a time and instead of sucking more he
will be learning to drink.

Why would anyone buy 30 of a product that they aren't happy with? If
you don't like it, get a different cup, your baby will get over it. I
try not to let my son get overly attached to any particular object, by
offering him different things and so far he hasn't. But maybe it's his
personality as well.

Dear Angela,

I have used these cups for all 4 of my children and have found that
the leaks occur in the way the cap is twisted. The silicon nipple
bunches slightly between the cap and the bottle. It is common to
tighten more to prevent leaks, but in this case, don't wrench the cap
and keep the indents on the nipple centered on the detents on the cap.
I hope this helps.

Does any one have a site to purchase the nipple only? My nipples shred
with use and need to be replaced often?

Hi there,
I recently purchased double pack of tall Nuby sippy cups from Target(I
threw away packaging and receipt and I do not have the exact name or
model info) and ran into a different problem. Right away my son could
not get water out of it. The poor child was dehydrated until I
realized the problem. I tried drinking from the cups myself and water
would not come out. The incisions in the spout were very small. I had
purchased Nuby cups before and previous ones seemed to work o.k.,
although some of them leaked. I tried making bigger incisions in the
spout to match the older cups, but ended up ruining them. I am going
to look for replacement spouts at Babies 'R' Us. However, I was hoping
to find a customer service number for this company and request
replacement spouts from them. Can anyone direct me to Nuby customer
service number? I could not find one on their web site.

Thank you
I.J.

nuby cup contact by erin brasil Sun December 23, 2007 @ 2:02 PM

First of all, isn't anyone noticing a pattern here? The company
producing this product obviously does not care about the consumer, but
rather, cares more for the money they can make by creating a terrible
product that children (and, dare I say, parents) will become easily
addicted to.

These are obviously not the best quality sippies but children love
them because they are nothing more than a glorified bottle. The truth
is, this cup should only be used briefly to first introduce sippies to
transitioning children. Once the child can drink from it, you should
really use a harder top. My son became addicted to this cup and began
sucking on it even when it was empty This worried me because we went
out of our way to NEVER use a pacifier in order to protect his little
teeth and ears. I finally took it to my pediatrician with me and
couldn't believe what she told me. This type of soft-top sippy is the
number one cause of ear infections in her office. Children like the
feel of sucking on that top so much that often times them are not
actually drinking what is inside causing the drainage to settle in
their ears. I wasn't shocked, my son has had his share of ear
infections since this sippy.

I wanted another professional opinion so I took it with me to the
dentist and asked a pediatric orthodontist about the product. He also
advised that I get rid of it because it is known to ruin little teeth.
He said it is actually WORSE than a normal pacifier because the top is
substantially larger! What a HORRIBLE product!

Throw these things away as soon as you can - they are not worth the
damage they cause and the company making these pieces of junk should
really be ashamed!

I have twins who are 10 months old. They too like these cups, and
ours leak just like yours. However, I have realized that there are
two notches in the silicone 'nipple' or spout (whatever you want to
call it). If those notches are not lined up correctly with the rim,
the cup leaks. When you screw the lid to the cup, the notches become
unaligned. You have to start the spout with the notches slightly
unaligned and they will line up as you screw it on. Kind of a pain,
but they don't leak that way.

I have purchased too many of these cups, as now my son is addicted to
them. They are almost like a bottle to him..but regardless, they
always leak. This is not due to any destruction that he is doing to
the cup, it's just that they will leak eventually. This is frustrating
when you have to clean many spills from things like couches, and
beds.
So, the only solution I have found is a look-alike cup, made by
another company. It is similar, but the spout is a little differnt.
Let me tell you, it works much much better!
I think they are available at Walgreens, for about the same price:)

Just curious if you ever got a response from anyone regarding your
leaking Nuby Soft Spout Sippy Cup. I am having the same problem I
have bought 6 cups now because that is the only one my son will drink
out of and 1 out of the 6 cups don't leak. I read alot of feedback
from others and mine are not leaking from the spout they are leaking
from the side when they get layed down (the threading is not right
they do not screw on tight). I do not have the original receipts or
packaging so I don't think I can return them to the store. Please let
me know what you have found out. You can e-mail me at

I have seen the replacement spout on Ebay. And the cost. They cost
more than the cups themselves. That is unacceptable. Especially when
you could buy them from Luv'N Care for as little as 1.00 each up until
January 07'. The cups cost $1.74 at Wal-mart. But I feel like a goof
buying entire cups like they are disposable. Goodforthekids, you are
doing no one a favor selling those replacement spouts for that price.
And to anyone who reads this, do a search under "nuby replacement
spouts" and you will se that LuvNCare used to sell the spouts
themselves but the "demand" forced them to stop. They know this is a
huge problem.
I know my son chews on the tops. And he loves these cups. I had no
problem buying 30 or so a month, but I will not be taken advantage of
like this.

Nuby Replacement Spouts Available - New Lower Price by GoodfortheKids Mon March 12, 2007 @ 9:10 PM

by GoodfortheKids Posted Sun January 21, 2007 @ 11:31 PM

Moms -

My company, www.GoodfortheKids.com, offers all of the available Nuby
replacement spouts and straws. Good for the Kids is currently the
only place you can buy all of the Nuby replacements. You will be
referred to my online store if you contact Luv n' Care for any of your
Nuby needs. The products I offer are direct from Luv n' Care and
their distributor.

Starting in February, Babies r Us will offer the Gripper spouts in
their stores, but not online. As of now, they will not offer the
other spouts and straws required for Nuby products.

Yes, it is true that it costs around $3 for the replacements if you
count shipping, but to ship each additional spout after the first (to
ship one spout is only $1.50) is only $.15 each. Other sites are
shipping their limited offering of Nuby replacements for over $7 just
to ship.

Please let me know how I can help you find the right spouts for the
cups you have. I do my best to get you the cups and spouts at the
best price possible, including shipping costs.

I have been having the same problem. I have contacted the company,
Luv N Care, but have not gor a reply yet. From what I have seen, you
can buy replacement spouts on ebay and other sites, but they are
running about $3.00 for 2 spouts + shipping. You can buy the whole
cup at Wal-Mart for about $1.75. I am sure that my son chews on the
spout some, but I think they should consider that when they make the
cups and make them stronger, so that they will last more than a few
times. I now have a cabinet full of cups that leak, but they are my
son's favorite ones

I have had a concern with my two and one year olds' Nuby sippy
cups. At first the nipples just started leaking, but then I realized
the nipple actually comes apart and could very easily cause a baby to
choke. I feel there needs to be a recall on these cups and no
replacement nipples sold. I hope no children are harmed due to these
cups!

one with the handles for beginners, the sport ones, the easy grip and

the spout. I like that nuby has the soft spouts, it makes switching
form a bottle much easier, but I have alot of money invested in these
cups, I am going to contact the company and make a complaint about
them. at at least $5 bucks or more you would think that it would be a

We have 8 of these cups. (So I don't have to wash them every night) I
put them in the dishwasher and they have lasted for 5+ months now. We
have one that started to leak. Like the first reply the nipple with
the three slits came apart. Long story short I found you can buy the
replacement tops at www.babybungalow.com/nubapr.html. They are 2.99
for two. We are very happy with the cups. We would have liked to be
able to buy the replacement part more than one place. But if you
think about it regular silicon nipples do not last much longer than a
few months.

I have had the exact same problem with the top of the cup i find it
very hard to believe Walmart doesn't get the silicone tops, they have

cup when it would be so simple and a big seller. I've seen you can get
the replacement pieces on-line however doesn't ship to Canada. I get

Hi my name is Rebecca Crook.I am having the same problem
with the lid. Does anyone know if you can just replace the soft
plastic part? Or must you keep replacing the whole cup? It is
ridiculous if you must keep buying new cups. Not that they are that
expensive but the cup should last longer then 3 months. Please send

The same thing has happened to my daughter's cup - the plastic "slits"
in the spoout have cup apart. She doesn't have teeth yet so she
couldn't have damaged them that way. I too am concerned that it is a
choking hazard and have taken away the cup. I have switched to avent
soft spout sippy-cups - all products are interchangeable(caps, seals,
nipples, sippy spout, bottles and cups) and there are handles that
your baby can hold too, though they are a little expensive.
