Costco Doesnt Value My Business

Posted Sat April 1, 2006, by Ken A. written to Costco Companies, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company

I received a mailing of Costco coupons sometime un February with coupons dated for the future. One coupon offered a $60m discount on a Rnvision widescreen computer monitor which expired 3/12/06. I saved that coupon for many weeks and "lost" it on the top of my desk. I discovered it on 3/14/06 and went to the Ocean, NJ store to ask if they would honor it. They refused, stating that it was a special promotion by the manufacturer and Costco could not honor the coupon any longer even though there where at least 20 in stock.

I realize that they have every right to deny me, but if they checked my buying record for the last 6 monthe they would have seen $15,ooo in purchases. Honoring the coupon would have made good PR.

P.S. I bought a different monitor last week at the same Costco.

Credit my account for $60.

If you spend $15K in 6 months at Costco, why do you need $60?

You even admitted that the fault was yours, so why should THEY have to
give you anything?

Yet another example of the "Maximus Entitleus" species.

I think part of the problem here is that there are so many stores that
DO allow you to use expired coupons. I know the bookstore and music
store in my mall do. And sometimes the Wal-Mart here will even take
them. Expesialy if you give them some story about how you lost it.
That tends to make people think that ALL stores should do it.

Someone else expects a store to honor a coupon that is expired.

Credit your account for trying to fraudulently use an expired coupon.
Are you just plain stupid.

You showed up w/an expired coupon. It was a nice try, but you were
shot down.
Get over it.

If everyone got old coupons, rebates and refunds there would be no
economy because everyone would be getting everything for free. YOU
lost it, not the cashier, not the manager, not the companie's CEO. Why
should they honor an unvalid coupon for your sake? Cashiers cannot
simply over-ride an invalid coupon, they could lose their jobs for
things like this. "Credit my account for $60." is pretty harsh. Your
the fool if you went back there and bought a different monitor
anyways.

ok let me get this straight. You want the COMPANY to credit YOUR
account because YOU simple LOST a coupon .. or actually... as you
say.. "lost"... sounds like your a pretty GREEDY customer to me! Was
the monitor on sale? if not.. why did you wait so long to use the
coupon? lazy are we??

I have a handy dandy little thing. It's called a coupon bag. That's
where I put my coupons. Rarely do they get lost.

I also mentioned a handy dandy thing I also have in my response to the
Ace Storage whine. It's called a calender. Where I note payment due
dates I also note exp dates on said coupons and I radical idea here,
go there before it expires.

Costco also keeps track of what you buy. You could have called to
explain you lost your coupon.

It doesn't matter how much money you have spent at Costco in the past
- - you allowed a coupon to expire - - end of story.

1) Had you gone to your Costco during the timeframe they would have
supplied a coupon for you, to replace yours and get your monitor.
2) The coupon discounts are issued by the manufacturer, not Costco.
They only function during the timeframe. Outside, they do not. You
want Costco to pull $60 out a drawer and throw it in the trash because
of YOUR oversight and your "big spending". At what point in "big
spending" should they start handing out money? $1000 annually, $50,000
annually. ! would expect $1,000,000 annually would be a good starting
point to exercise some personal leverage.
3)"Costco Doesnt Value My Business"???? Actually they value STAYING in
business.

Costco doesn't value your business? Why do they send you coupons to
begin with? They must hate you!

Well maybe you do spend $15000 at costco, but the main point is th
coupon was expired two days ago. YOU not them misplaced it. People
lose things all the time, but if you had taken better care of the
coupon(sticking it on your fridge) this would not have happened. You
are not going to get your account credited.

If it was a promotion by the manufacturer, then Costco was getting
reimbursed for the coupons that they accepted. If they had accepted
one past the expiration date they would have lost the money on it. It
is not their fault that you waited too long to redeem the coupon.

Yawn...another one of those customers who thinks that he/she is

They seem to have given you a correct and complete answer. It strikes
me as very unfair to complain that a company would not grant you a
special favor, at possible legal risk to itself, and at its own
expense.

Some companies do indeed bend policies for valued customers, but they
shouldn't. Policies are policies, and quite frankly ALL customers
should have to obey them.

In other words, the amount of money you spend makes you above
following the rules that every other customer must follow?

The coupon was expired. It doesn't matter how many monitors were in
stock. If you really wanted to make your point, you should have
bought your monitor somewhere besides Costco so why do they need to
make you feel good, you still gave them your business. What would the
point be.
