The Mystery Of The Kraft Moldy Cheese

Posted Sat April 29, 2006, by Jennie P. written to Kraft Foods, Inc.

Moldy Cheese in a Sealed Package

Today I bought an 8oz package of "naturally" shredded mild cheddar cheese. I took it home and put it in my refridgerator.
An hour or so later, I went to use the cheese. I open up the bag, and to my surprise, there is a big chunk of moldy cheese on top.
Naturally, I couldn't serve that. Which put somewhat of a damper on "Taco Night".

I was shocked, because this is the first time I have had an issue with a Kraft's Food product.
I would be happy to provide the package information & store location, so this incident can be looked into.

P.S While we're at it, could someone solve a mystery for my family? How is the cheese "naturally" shredded? What is un-naturally shredded cheese?
Thank you.

We went back to the store the other day; we were in the area.
Told them what had happened, and they offered an exchange if we
brought the package in. I turned them down(I had already thrown it
out) and just said I wanted to let them know, so they can look into
their storage and handling and whatnot.

A brand like Kraft is hardly indifferent to moldy cheese, and I just
wonder whether this is more of a retailer storage issue. Perhaps you
should direct your feedback to the grocery store in which you
purchased the moldy cheese. The Kraft I remember is very conscious of
their quality control. - The Ad-Man

one???

I hate that! I like your letter a great deal. It is clear and
concise, and funny without coming off as sarcastic. I hope they get
back to you!

One other thing: As others have mentioned, you might want to take
this up with the store itself. Sometimes improper handling can cause
this result after the packaging process.

Cheese can and will go moldy when exposed to the air. This has been
going on since the dawn of cheese making. It happens to EVERY cheese
producer all over the world. Every one of us has had cheese go moldy.
There is no need to write the world about it.

That's not unusual. One microscopic hole in the bag equals mold.

At the risk of grossing everyone out, here's some practical advice.
If you need the cheese right away, just throw out the moldy chunk and
use the rest, as long as it looks good. And even if you ate the mold,
it wouldn't hurt you, but it does taste awful. I know because I ate
mold on a piece of bread once by accident. Ugh!

I agree that you should've taken it back to the store.

I think it is called Kraft Natural Shredded Cheese and I think the
natural referes to the cheese, not the shredding process. I would
have returned it to the store I bought it at.

This has happened to me as well with Kraft and the shredded and stick
cheese. The stores are usually good about taking care of a return. It
is nasty, though, isn't it?

Unfortunately, there might have been a small rip in the package
somewhere, even pin hole sized, which could have let air in, in turn,
causing the mold. Its sad that you didn't notice it at the store, and
that you needed to use the product immediately. I keep a small stock
of cheese onhand because I make quesadillas like every other day. You
can freeze cheese, and pull it out when you need it later.

Call the number on the back of the package. Like in your letter,
Kraft would need to know the information on the package so that they
can fix the error. They'll send you a coupon in the mail for free
product.

While it is good you messaged Kraft, I would have taken that cheese
right back to the store you got it from. They most likely would
exchange it.
