Pamela has a point! And it is founded in capitalism. She is informing amazon of her reasons for boycotting. That's as american as it gets. She did not make violent threats if they did not comply to her standards. She simply is choosing who gets her dollar!
Lol!! The idiot single person, who said that they spend far more dollars than a parent with children, is absolutely delusional. Parents spend far more of our consumer dollars than single people ever do!! Raising children is incredibly expensive!! It is why so many single people have not attempts to do so. They are too narcissistic to spend that much on someone other than themselves.
Yes adware and spybot can help her have fewer offensive ads. And it is impossible from her OP to know whether this was an amazon ad or if it is a result of what's been viewed on her computer causing this particular type of Trojan ad. That's the more pertinent thing she needs to know.
If someone on your computer is opening porn sites or ads (and there really are a ton!) then you will get flooded with porn ads. If pamelas seeing a lot of porn ads, there is a high likelihood that someone in your home has been clicking on these types of ads and sites. Cyber content protect is one that's been really successful in my home. Lol!!! However there is a joke site geared towards elementary kids that it constantly flags: Giant in the playground which is abbreviated: Giantitplayground. The "tit" in the web address gets flagged constantly. Good luck securing your computer!

I think its ridiculous that things have to be censored for YOUR children. I'm sick of PAYING money to get uncensored radio so YOUR children won't hear bad words, you should be paying for the censorship, not my fault you had children. Why shouldn't they show consideration for people who aren't so conservative? And what is your CHILD doing browsing the net unsupervised? If they were supervised I don't see how that is a problem. Don't worry as a single person I will spend more than enough money to make up for you not shopping there. I hope you don't let your kids out of the house, they might see something bad :0

Seeing as how it is illegal for people under eighteen (21 in some areas) to view pornography, I have to agree with the OP here. It's extremely inappropriate for something like that to come up in an advertisement.

Look, there is a document called the U.S. Constitution, it gives us the freedom of "speech", you don't have to agree with the message or the intent, but others have a right to voice their opinions or view, in any manner they see fit. This is not a theocracy, it's a democracy. I am sorry if you wer offended, but it seems crude to say that persons who disagree with you want to expose kids to porn. and yes, before you reply I do know that the constitution protects the freedom of religion, hey you go to your church, and I'll go to mine.

Um, so what? Who are you to judge? Maybe other people don't want to be assaulted by the images of Barney and the Teletubbies when they're browsing on Amazon.com but I've yet to hear one complain about that kind of content.

I'm very offended that the conservative customers show very little respect for capitolism. This is America--not the USSR. To say that because you don't want to buy it doesn't mean that everyone doesn't want to. It sounds to me like you want America to be a communist nation. Because in capitolism, when you don't like something you don't buy it!!! But to say I DON'T LIKE THIS PRODUCT, GET IT OUT OF MY SIGHT!! Is a compleatly ignorent thing to say. You need to realize that America isn't a Christian nation--it's a nation comprised of many many religions. And I already know what you're going to say, so calm down. The laws and ideals of our country aren't founded on Christian ideas. Those ideas are found in EVERY religion. Yup... every single one. Name a religion that says killing is ok and stealing is ok and rape is ok. What you're saying is that conservative people are more important then non-conservative people. That's redicilous.
Also, how did the pictures "assult" you? Did the pictures of the gay people jump off the page and slap you? Did they punch you in the face? Did it attack you because you're conservative? You do know that, according to a 2003 Barna survey, 28% of Christians said that looking at porn is ok--don't you? (I found this at crosswalk.com) And why is it Amazon's job to keep your children from looking at those images? You know you can put a filter on your internet that keeps them from looking at it. If you have so little control of your children that they would go to sights that you don't believe are morally acceptable for your family--that's your problem and your fault.
Anyway, best of luck to you Comrad.

I used Amazon a lot and I do believe you about the pornography. Ebay also allows pornography. I was going to purchase a dvd that was old classic monsters and as I was looking and paging their site I clicked on and to my surprise came this totally naked girl in an offensive position. Grossed me out. I left Ebay without any purchases. I will not visit Ebay anymore. YaK!

Actually I want to reply to the poster who said, "The original writer was trying to protect kids from pornography, especially gay pornography-- and that's fine." I assume the "protection" is in the name of religion.
Why is that? I think it's more important to protect kids from RELIGION. How many wars have started because of pornography? How many people have beeen burned, innocents slaughtered, others tortured because of pornography? I don't believe in censorship, but if I did, I'd say do it to religion before you do it to sex. The former destroys people. The latter makes new ones.

This is more then likely a piece of spyware that got intstalled on your computer without you knowing and the spyware is the ones that caused these ads to come up and not amazon.com
Try running adaware and spybot search and destroy and this should fix the problem.
Also make sure you have a decent anti-virus and firewall on your computer!

After having gone through and read each and every post on this thread (phew, did that take a long time) I feel it is appropriate for me to put in my 2 cents. The Bible, in my opinion, is an extremely vague work. Every statement is open-ended in that it is left to interpretation. It is amazing to me how 2 different people reading the same words believe two different things that the statment is trying to say.
If this book of God were so infalable, as Margaret would have you believe, how is it that there can be so many different versions. Either it happened this way or that.
Margaret, if I had ever considered an organized religion, you've done a fantastic job of proving my reasons for not being involved and never having a desire to be. I don't need a pastor/preacher/father or any other man of cloth to tell me what I should and shouldn't do. I know morals and I know right from wrong and that is what is important.

John 18
Persecutions Predicted
18"If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me before it hated you. 19If you were of the world, the world would love [you as] its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. 20Remember the word I spoke to you: 'A slave is not greater than his master. ' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours. 21But they will do all these things to you on account of My name, because they don't know the One who sent Me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin. Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23The one who hates Me also hates My Father. 24If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not have sin. Now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25But [this happened] so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled: They hated Me for no reason.
Same verses, from The Message version:
Hated by the World
18-19"If you find the godless world is hating you, remember it got its start hating me. If you lived on the world's terms, the world would love you as one of its own. But since I picked you to live on God's terms and no longer on the world's terms, the world is going to hate you.
20"When that happens, remember this: Servants don't get better treatment than their masters. If they beat on me, they will certainly beat on you. If they did what I told them, they will do what you tell them.
21-25"They are going to do all these things to you because of the way they treated me, because they don't know the One who sent me. If I hadn't come and told them all this in plain language, it wouldn't be so bad. As it is, they have no excuse. Hate me, hate my Fatherit's all the same. If I hadn't done what I have done among them, works no one has ever done, they wouldn't be to blame. But they saw the God-signs and hated anyway, both me and my Father. Interestingthey have verified the truth of their own Scriptures where it is written, 'They hated me for no good reason.'
You can hate me, It was predicted and I'm fine with it, but I will pray for all of you, I would like to see every one of you saved, so please don't hate the message.

I'm a bit confused by all these responses. On one hand people are trying to protect their children from pornography in general, and especially gay pornogrophy and that's fine....a very noble cause.
What gets me is these same people will go stand in line, plunk down 10 bucks per person for a ticket, stand in another line and pay 3 bucks for a small popcorn each, another 2 bucks for a soda, another two bucks for a box of stale jujubees or some other toxic sugar laden chemical ridden concoction and sit for three hours to watch "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" The most graphically violent, In Your Face vile and pornographic in the truest sense of the word, frenzied gratuitous blood lust-driven depiction of the most cruelest example of man's inhumanity towards other men. Then pack everyone up in their minivans, give the kids ridalin and sleep aids and psychotropic drugs. The parents go to their room, lock the door and engage in matrimonially sanctioned monkey sex, ignoring the bible and using condoms and ky jelly and birth control.and blue pills if there's a problem with hydrolics. It's not a sin if you do it. Go ahead, gossip, spread rumors, judge others, deny others rights you embrace as God Given because they don't look like you, love like you, worship like you, conform like you do. So what exactly IS Pornographic?

Wow. Ok. I have read the letter, I have read the posts, and I have an opinion (big surprise). I am going to try to put this as clearly as I possibly can.
Margaret, if you want to convert people to your faith, you might try coming across a tad less...well...crazy. I understand that faith and logic are two different things, but surely they needn't be mutually exclusive. One of my favorite things about your faith is that, as I understand it, Jesus taught his followers to love and tolerate others. As I recall, there was something very nice He said about not casting stones unless you are without sin yourself. I admit, I am no Christian, so I'm not sure of the subtext here, but I'm pretty sure you guys don't think anyone is without sin, right? So no Christian would ever presume to judge someone else, since only God can pass judgement. Do I have that right? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall my days of college scripture classes (majored in comparative religion for a few months there), I think I have the gist of it.
As far as the letter itself is concerned, I went and looked at the ad you spoke of, and while it is slightly suggestive, I personally see nothing wrong with a picture of two men standing in a non-erotic pose, with all of their "bits" covered. If you feel that is a bit risque for your children, by all means be a parent and don't let them surf the internet alone.
If your problem is simply the nudity, that's one thing. Not that a healthy well-adjusted person should have any huge hang-ups about the human body, but if you do, ok. To paraphrase Larry Flynt, if you have a problem with the human body, take it up with the manufacturer.
If your problem is the homosexuality, I cordially invite you to lock up the bomb shelter, because those people aren't going anywhere. I suppose I am addressing both you and Margaret when I say that as far as I can see, if homosexuality wasn't a part of the gods'/God's/the Great Pumpkin's/whatever's plan, surely there wouldn't be so gosh-darned many of them.
For the record, I don't hate Christians. I hate people that hide behind a religion that should be preaching love, in order to advance an agenda of hatred.

They have this book, a scripture if you will, and these people pour over ever lit bit of minutia in this book. They take this (mis)information and twist it and bend it and make it say exactly what they need it to say.
Not all are equal in the eyes of their Lord and they never will be. The wicked society, especially the west, has decayed into a vast wasteland of decadence, and the only way to salvation is through their Lord. Tolerance of any other Lord is forbidden. The world shall be theirs in the coming doom.
Justice from the barrel of a rifle or the fuse of a bomb. For if it is the Lord's work, then it is a good thing.
If it is not praise for their Lord then it is surely blasphemous and a rage will ensue.
Governments exist soley to enforce the will of their God, regardless of which God you may worship.
They chastise others within their group that do not hold the same views. Luckily for all of us, the zealots represents a small percentage compared to the more passionate true believers. The true believers get a black eye from the overly enthused, but they nonetheless suffer from the zealots.
Some of these people call themselves Christians, some of these people fly airplanes into buildings.

And the fact that Amazone sells vibrators and various other sexual toys doesn't bother you? Come on. Grow up and deal with the fact that people are sexual creatures, no matter how they like it (bi, gay, lesbian, straight). If you don't care for it for YOUR OWN children, buy a program that you can block amazon.com with. Then you don't have to worry about your innocent sweeties seeing the real world.

So are you more upset that it was a gay magazine or that it was porn in general. I wonder if you would be as upset if it was a Playgirl, Hustler or Playboy magazine that you saw.

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.
Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.
Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.
Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down.
Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
Repeat chorus.
I can't imagine anything more lewd and full of inneuendo...what about the children?!?!

Wow, what a lot of replies by teenagers who don't want anyone to take away their ability to look at things at which they shouldn't be looking! I certainly hope those are teenagers, because if they're parents, they're incompetent ones. If they're not parents, they have no right to comment either way, since their views will change once they have children. Ah, they're so cute before they actually have kids and start thinking about the future and society and their responsibilities to both
I'll be more careful about shopping at amazon, and I spend about $10,000 a year there! (Lots of it on "offensive" evnagelical materiials.)

When ever someone cries "But what about the children?!!?", I can only think that she is merely using the "children" to hide her own fears. Amazon sells a lot of stuff I consider obscene as well--namely hate-mongering evangelical books, CDs and DVDs that offend me as a more liberal consumer. But, I certainly don't expect Amazon to cater to my personal views or to censor its catalogue so that unsuspecting children are assaulted by the vitriol of Ann Coulter or Joe Scheidler or Flip Benham. I consider this stuff more damaging to kids than their discovery that some men like other men sexually. Personal belief. I can't wait until you cruise the sex toy aisle.
It's my experience that Amazon has its site set up so that ads for other items that are related to the items one has selected to view pop up as a suggestive selling technique. No pun intended. I popped over to Amazon and I checked out the link and Esquire showed up--a magazine that ticks me off for other resons that are not germane to this post (i.e. the demise of the magazine as a publisher of quality writing). I just find it difficult to believe that the ad for Torso just popped up out of nowhere--just what DVDs were you looking at?

So where are kids supposed to get their porn these days? In my ex's day, he and his brothers just hit the Dumpsters behind the military barracks (a virtual gold mine for porn mags) then sold them at school.
Better a kid gets his porn from Amazon.com than from the 40-year-old guy on a webcam at myspace.com.

his head will explode?
I have to believe that Amazon made an honest mistake here, in that you'd have to be buying or looking at buying something pornography-related (sex toys, etc.) in order to see ads for other porn products.
Heck, I may have to go back to giving Amazon my business after all!

Main stream internet goes racey - Film at 11.
It's an advertising banner, just like the ones you find ALL OVER THE NET. The companies that pimp these banners try to make sure that the content is properly filtered so that only mainstream ads go on mainstream websites, and off-color ads go on adult only websites. The problem is that pron companies know that the greater their exposure, the higher their sales...so when they register their banner, they purposely mislable what categories it should be shown in.
Now, what is SUPPOSED to happen is the company that pimps the banners is supposed to preview the banners before adding them to the rotation, so that if something is miscategorized, they can stop it from going out. But they don't always do that...sometimes, one gets through. Hence, this experience.
So really, if you want to boycott someone, boycott the banner company. It was their job to make sure yuck doesn't make it to the areas where the eyes of babes will be. Although, honestly, your kids probably won't be on Amazon shopping unless they have credit cards.

Are you *sure* this is Amazon's fault? A lot of spyware/adware programs insert ads on various websites which the owners of the websites have no control over. I'd suggest running AdAware or Spybot S&D to make sure everything is clean.

Isn't there some sort of parental controls you can put on your computer to prevent Junior from clicking on those links? If so, then it is YOUR responsibility as a parent to do so, not amazon.com's.

Who wants to look at naked men while on Amazon?
Sure, if it were a tasteful ad for a magazine featuring beautiful women that would be ok. The kind where they bathe each other in foamy tubs and frolic in fields of wild flowers and such and such. You know "Art" photos.
Sorry, couldn't help myself. The other posters are right. Unless the ad was graphic enough to show sexual acts among gay men, then I don't think your children are going to be scarred for life. I haven't seen the ad, but I doubt Amazon would have anything more than maybe a couple of guys with their shirts off.

It's not like they would have actually pornography on the site. Also, it's not like your children could PURCHASE the pornography.
Also it would be much easier for your children to get access to pornography through ads, image systems (such as google images) and actual pornography sites (sure most of them, if not all, have that "I am 18 years or older" disclaimer but come on, it's incredibly easy to lie). Also this may shock you but many stores also carry pornography mags.
My point is - while not necessarily "easy" to get access to pornography, if your children really wanted to, they could get it in much easier ways than through Amazon. Of course, I do not know how old your children are.
