Another customer gone...but you won't care.

I've had a Target credit card for nearly two years now. During that time, I've had a perfect payment history and have used my card every single month to purchase products at Target. Yet I've only received one credit line increase since I've opened my Target account; from a $200 credit limit to a $500 credit limit, issued 90 days after my account was opened. I've requested additional credit line increases over the past two years, but Target has denied those requests.
Last night I went to Target to purchase a new digital camera. The camera was $400. Since I did not have enough available credit to purchase the camera on my Target card, I told the cashier I wanted to charge half on my Target card and the other half on my Visa card. After toying with the cash register and trying to figure out how to complete the transaction as requested for about 15 minutes, the cashier finally called a manager over.
The manager explained to me that I could not split the purchase between my Target card and another credit card. I either had to charge all of it to my Target card or none of it. I did not want to charge the entire amount to my Visa, but I didn't really have any other choice. So I told them to credit the amount the cashier had charged to my Target card and charge the entire amount to my Visa. I then told them I would charge the other merchandise I was purchasing on my Target card. So they tried, but guess what? The card was DECLINED! Why? Because they couldn't instantly credit my card what they had already charged to it. They said the credit would not reflect for 24 hours. And the manager didn't even bother to apologize for the problem.
To be quite honest, I've had more than enough of this nonsense. Your credit card is not meeting my needs, and neither is the customer service at your stores. I plan on paying my Target card down to a $0 balance and shoving it in my sock drawer, where it will live indefinitely; only seeing the light of day two times per year when it will be used and then paid in full, thus ensuring it will continue to report as a positive trade line on my credit reports. I'll be doing my shopping at Wally-World from now on.
Learn how to treat its customers. Show a little loyalty to those customers who spend a considerable amount of money at Target stores and pay their bills on time, every time.

Next time you are in a situation like this, split up the items yourself. Take half of your shopping cart and have it rung up on your Target card. When that transaction is complete, take the rest of your items and have them rung up on you Visa card. At worst, this will slightly annoy the customer behind you (because they would have to wait for two separate transactions), but otherwise the purchase should be foolproof.

You're right; they won't care. Most companies don't.
However, you have to realize that they DID attempt to do as you requested.
You mention they couldn't credit your credit card instantly. Something in this does not make sense. You had half of it charged to your Target card. But, then you wanted it all charged to your Visa card. Your Visa balance has no bearing on your Target card. So, it does not seem to be the problem being with the transaction; but, rather your Visa did not have enough credit, either. Even if they could instantly credit the Target card, your Visa still has to be able to handle it.
Now, as far as doing half and half, most cashiers have no clue. All they should have to do is run the amount through. Then, they will (should) have a balance due. Then, they should be able to process a second card. It should be that simple. Most cashiers are not trained to deal with that situation. I have to train them how to do two checks. The register will do whatever you tell it to do. It isn't a huge deal. Altho; it may be possible that they are not programmed to handle dual credit cards. I havent worked registers in a long time; so, I dont know for sure. However, I have a feeling, it's just a matter of learning how to do it.

I dont understand the problem here. Basically you are blaming Target because you havent paid your bill.
Here is the easy way to go about taking responsibility for your own problems and straightening them out.
A.) PAY OFF YOUR TARGET CARD
B.) NEVER BUY SOMETHING YOU DONT HAVE THE MONEY FOR
See?! EASY!

I don't know why the system won't allow 2 credit cards for the same purchase, but it won't.
Have you tried upgrading to the Target Visa? It has a higher credit limit, a lower interest rate, and can get you another 10% off a full day of shopping.
What time of day were you there? If you were there after 2pm, then it would take up to 24 hours to credit your card. If you were there before 2pm it could take just a few minutes.

Just wanted to let you know that most stores don't actually own their credit companies. I don't know if that's the case with Target or not. But like I said, most stores pay a third party to actually run the card part. The only reason they offer them is to get you to spend more at their store rather than somewhere else.
Also, SprawlMart is the devil. I guarantee that you find a different retailer than them. Shopping at SprawlMart is like selling your soul for cheap detergent. Its just not worth it. Just think of the poor employees that have to work for that awful company.

I don't use credit cards--I would get a credit card if I were making a major purchase, like a digital camera or something like that. Otherwise, I use my debit card. No interest charges, and you can't spend money you don't have.
But what I really wanted to say is this: People charge $200 million PER WEEK at Target on their TARGET CARDS ALONE. Insane. Now, I'm not a fan of mass marketing, national chains, disposable goods (I even go camping with real plates, cups, and silverware, because I don't want to throw things away).
But Target seems to be a good employer--better than Wal-Mart (inarguably), and better than most national chains. (Costco seems to be among the BEST at pay and benefits, and thus has the lowest turnover in the industry.)
So... that should give you an idea that Target won't care you're not using their card ($200M a week! That's just insane to me!), but you should do whatever you need to to save your sanity.
I think it's ridiculous that your card can be charged immediately but it would take 24 hours to credit it. Seems unnecessary to me.

Forget the target card. Get yourself a 0% interest card. Some of them are good for a year. You can even pay off other balances with it but just get one that has no fee for balance transfers. Those Dept store credit cards are a rip off. Try citibank online and look around. I believe some may even be posted on debtsmart.com (I think thats the link). If your visa has high interest phone them and tell them to lower your interest rate. If they don't then go elsewhere. If you mention you might go elsewhere they might lower it right on the spot. If they don't, no problem. Many other fish in the sea so to speak for credit cards. Their loss.

Part of why I'm upset is because I could not split a purchase between two cards. Partly I'm upset because of Target's policies regarding credit line increases. They don't make sense. And partly I'm upset by the apathetic attitudes of Target's managers towards inconveniencing customers. It's not any single thing, but a collective of incidents over a two-year period that has ultimately led me to believe that my money would best be spent elsewhere.

I understand your dilemma. And thanks for the heads up. I wont be getting a Target card. My credit is excellent and I dont need a store screwing it up for me. However, I do like their store currently but I just won't get their card without a magnificent incentive. Then I might only use it for that. Then cut it up. I didn't think closing a credit card account lowered your Fico score though, thought it helped. Interesting tidbit.

You're still going to use the card "two times per year"...oooooh, that'll show them! If you really dislike the card so much, cut it up completely! Besides, even if you stop using the card, you'll obviously still be shopping at Target, they'll still be getting your business!
I don't get people who think just because they pay on time, they're entitled to all sorts of credit increases. I had a store charge card years ago, paid it in full every month, and it never went above a $500 limit (I had it for 5 years, charged about $100/month, paid in full and on time). That's just the way it goes.
Why don't you try paying extra on your Visa? Assuming it's a charge card, and not a debit, you have a better chance of getting a credit line increase on that than on a store card.
