Tidy Cats Small Spaces: Poor Performance

Posted Fri June 23, 2006, by Marie B. written to Purina Premium

Write a Letter to this Company

I have been a loyal user of Tidy Cats cat litter for many years. So I was especially disappointed to find that your Tidy Cats Small Spaces was completely ineffective. Even though we have a LitterMaid that regularly scoops the litter, we found the odor was much stronger using Tidy Cats Small Spaces than with other Tidy Cats products.

We have three cats, and we have always found that Tidy Cats Crystals did the best job of keeping litter odor under control. But when we saw the new Small Spaces product, we decided to try it. We have a large house, but the back hallway where the litterbox is kept is fairly small. That hallway is also the only access to our guest bathroom, so it is important to keep the area fresh-smelling. From the very first day, we found that the odor was much stronger than usual. There was a barely-there freshener type of smell, but it did not even begin to mask the much stronger odor of cat urine. After years of buying your quality products, I was more than disappointed.

I would like to be refunded the purchase price of the product or have coupons sent that allow me to purchase an alternate type of Tidy Cats products. Please consider removing the Small Spaces formula from the market; it was a real disappointment.

I have to play the devil's advocate. I really like the Tidy Cat for
Small Spaces. I had my oldest cat for 11 years and most recently
aquired another lovely kitten, Sammy. I have battled urine smell for
years from my oldest cat, Archie. He is a very large cat and when he
uses his potty he clumps 1/4 if the pan. His urine is also very
strong!!! I just a month ago saw the Tidy Cat for Small Spaces at our
local Walmart and thought I would give it a try. I love it! I have
the pans in a closet (to keep them out of reach of the 5 dogs) in my
office. I am in my office a lot and I don't have the issues with the
smell anymore. I couldn't be happier. There is a citrus type smell
instead. I would recommend this one!! =-)

I like Feline Pine cat litter. It's no tracking, no dust, vet
recomended, safer for the cat AND you, and it seriously stops smells.
Plus when it's time to clean it you can just flush the poop down the
toilet and when it's time to empty the box and put fresh litter in you
can use it in your yard :D It rocks and my cat (who is a picky little
brat) loves it.

1 litter box for three cats! And the cats let you get away with that?
I own 15 beautiful ragdolls and siameses. Each cat has her or his own
litter box. If you visited my home you would never know I had even one
cat. I sprinkle the bottom of each litter box with baking soda then I
mix oil dry with Sam's club clumpimg litter. I found that the
littermate could not keep the litter boxes as clean as I like them, it
may be ok for a 1 cat household. I also scrub each litter box once a
week and lightly spray them with clorox and let them dry before
refilling. All plasic litter boxes will get scrathes and odors will
build up, I replace my litter boxes every year. Cats are a lot of work
and you must be willing to work harder so your home is odor free. Also
cats do not like changes if you want to change litter brands do it by
mixing your old litter brand with the new.Did you notice if your cats
were more stress that week when you used small spaces. If they did not
intake enough water their urine would have been stronger then normal.
I have never used small spaces, I'm only offering what I have been
doing for 15 years and it works.
P.S. All my cats are rescued from shelters and the streets.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience! Personally, I love Tidy Cat's
Small Spaces. After moving into my new apartment, I was really bummed
when I realized that the only place I could find to keep my cat's
litter box was in my bedroom. I was worried about smell, but after
using Small Spaces and cleaning it daily, I've never had a problem.
Also, thank's to whomever reccommended filling it with 1/2 cheaper
litter and 1/2 Tidy Cat. I'm definitely going to try that! :)

You tried something new. You didn't like it. That does not in any
way entitle you to a refund or freebies.

I use the Crystals litter... the kind with just the big crystals. It
works really well and absorbs all of the smells. I never smell cat pee
or poop. You can't use that with the littermaid but they work so much
better!

I don't think you're entitled to get your money back. You tried a new
product, found that it didn't work, so now you know.

I have three cats and two litter boxes that I clean twice a day, and I
have found that since Tidy Cat started to blend some of those blue
crystals in with their clumping cat litter, the litter doesn't clump
as well as it used to. I don't think you can even get a TC brand cat
litter w/out the crystals in it anymore, so I guess it's time to start
trying out new litters (well, to let my cats try it, anyway). Too
bad, since TC was the best thing on the market for so darn long.

I've got two cats, and I agree crystals kind of suck. They don't
clump, so they just sit in the litter and smell! Yuck! Man, you really
have to love your kitties in order to deal with a litter box!

Actually you should have 1 box for each cat and an extra one if
possible.

This comes from the radio show Pet Central. I strongly recommend it.
You can listen to it at wgnradio.com 8-10 PM central on Sunday nights.

I noticed something totally different in this letter. If you have a
Littermaid self-cleaning litter box (which I'm assuming the reader
does since she stated she has a Littermaid that scoops the litter on a
regular basis) you shouldn't be using crystals to begin with. It
states in the directions that you should not. I think it has something
to do with the crystals clogging the motor. With this being said, I
have never personally used Tidy Cats small spaces however I have used
Tidy Cats before and it was not as good as the Arm and Hammer Super
Scoop I usually use. However, I do agree that with three cats one
litter box may not be enough. I have two cats and an extra large
litter box and I sometimes feel that I should have two. If I were the
writer of this letter, I would just chalk up buying small spaces as
learning what does and does not work for you. If you haven't tried Arm
and Hammer Super Scoop, I would strongly suggest it. Have a nice day!

Small Spaces isn't a crystal litter by Brightie Sat June 24, 2006 @ 9:25 PM

Thanks for the info! by Moof Sat June 24, 2006 @ 9:52 PM

You have a multi-cat household. One litter box for 3 cats is simply
not effective enough to handle the traffic it will see from the cats
using it on a constant basis. I know this for a fact because I have a
household of 4 cats. There are two boxes.

The solution is simple: You need another litter box. It doesn't have
to be a LitterMaid (which IMO, doesn't work very well), just a regular
box or even a covered box. I would suggest if you wanted to purchase
an alternate brand of Tidy Cats to use the Multi Cat formula.

This is a good letter, very informative. The only part I would get rid
of is asking that they remove it from the market. Just because it
didn't work for you means they should stop manufacturing it? As you
can see from other posts, it DOES work for others and I'm sure they
wouldn't appreciate if it were taken off the market just because it
didn't work for Marie. If anything, just stop purchasing it if it
doesn't work for you.

I have been using Tidy Cats Small Spaces for several weeks now as I
live in a very small apartment with my one cat.

Prior to using this litter, there was always an odor (and I scooped
the litter box 1-2 times per day).

Since I've been using Tidy Cat for small spaces, I've noticed a huge
improvement! The clumping is much better and there is no odor
what-so-ever.

I think the OP's problem is that there are too many cats and not
enough litter boxes. If the OP has three cats, there should be a
minimum of 2 litter boxes. I'm certain this would help cut down on
odors.

I do not believe the OP is entitled to a refund nor should the item be
taken off the shelf just because the OP didn't like the product.

It's clear that many people are probably satisfied with this product
and the way it works!

Two per cat? Then the vet can come and scoop!!

All three of us are quite happy with the two boxes. In fact, they're
not even boxes. I have the Bodega igloo lookin' ones. It gives
everyone involved some privacy. ;)

Plus my youngest has a bad habit of flinging litter EVERYWHERE. The
steps leading to the litter area ensure that the kitties' paws are
fairly clean of litter, and the overall design makes it hard for
litter to be kicked out.

I'm still stuck on the idea of two boxes per cat.

Do you like the igloo ones? Are they easy during the deep clean? I
had one covered one, but it was such a pain in the butt when I did my
weekly deep clean, I've taken the lid off and just use the bottom
half.

I usually rinse, soap with dish soap, rinse again for deep clean, so I
have to take the whole thing apart once a week. I like the look of
the Igloo ones tho.

My oldest is very tall and lanky and has a bad habit of peeing over
the top of the box...when the covered one had the lid on, he'd pee in
the crack and it'd be all over the sides. EW!!!!!!!

I rescue kitties, so I have a small isolation room that,
unfortunately, doesn't get great ventilation. That room could be
painful at the end of a day before Tidy Cats Small Spaces. As soon as
I started using it, I fell in love with the long lasting odor control
and how tightly it clumps, making my litterbox cleaning much faster
and easier.

Here's something that might help - in my litterbox, I fill it halfway
first with a cheap instant odor control litter...whatever clumping
generic I see that week. Then I fill it the other half way with Small
Spaces. Cuts down on cost, and works sometimes more effectively.

Good luck!
