Martha Stewart outdoor patio table

I have an outdoor furniture set by Martha Stewart for Kmart. It has five chairs and the table has a lazy susan on it. I absolutely love this set. It has sat under an eave where it would not get wet(the info that came with it said that the finish would last a long time if it was not exposed to rain). Even though it has been protected from the elements it has started to rust but because I love the set so much I have been touching it up (without much success).
Yesterday morning, I heard a terrific BOOM and then another BOOM. I went outside and the glass on the table, except for the lazy susan part, had exploded and was lying in little squares under the table. We often have dinner out there with my two small sons. I shudder at what could have happened to them. No one was at home at the time but me and no one was on the patio.
I would like to know why this happened and how likely it is to happen again. I feel that kmart should replace my table and I would like to be assured of its safety.

We too have the Martha Stewart set. Our table exploded also. Thank God no one was on the patio. The glass shattered all over. We had already replaced the table, I too feel we should be given a refund.

Oh my gosh!!!!! My son, husband and I have been cleaing up glass for the last 4 hours. I have that same table and the same exact thing happend. The lazy susan is just fine but the glass table is shattered and after trying to move the frame we have dicovered it has just collapsed.
What happened?
I love this table! I actually just had a new deck built to accomodate the table and chairs. Our deck has always been too small for it. We have only had the deck for a little over a month and now my beautiful table is a disaster.
I decidede to get online to just make some inquiries.
Is there any one who has information to call or e-mail someone to see about having it replaced?
Thank You Kelly

That's just nuts. I can't believe so many people have had this problem. You're lucky no one was hurt! They should be MUCH more proactive about recalling these and getting your money back or a replacement table and chairs to you. Good luck!

I wonder what makes the glass tables explode. I think Martha Stewart is trying to rip you off. and she did time in jail for her insider trading. Shame on her!

Here is a link with some information.
Government Investigates Exploding Tables
Becky Thompson, Consumer Investigator
POSTED: 5:20 pm EDT July 18, 2006
UPDATED: 6:18 pm EDT July 18, 2006
PITTSBURGH -- Channel 11 was the first to report about a government investigation into exploding tables.
After the report on Monday about Shirley Engle's exploding patio table, several more Pittsburgh viewers called and said the same thing happened to them.
Chris and Ron Sklenar of North Huntingdon said the same thing had happened to them, but at the time someone was sitting at the table
Chris Sklenar said she was eating at her glass patio dining table when it exploded last summer, shattering the entire table.
"I heard a noise that sounded like a small bomb going off. And I heard her scream and when I ran out the door all I saw was glass everywhere, her food was on the floor," said Ron Sklenar.
Glass shards were in Chris Sklenar's face and embedded in her skin.
The table was a Martha Stewart brand outdoor table purchased at Kmart.
Dozens of people are complaining about it online nationwide.
The table prompted a law firm to file for a class-action lawsuit.
Kmart said it is aware of the issue and released this response:
"We take consumer product safety very seriously and we believe that these tables are safe. It's the company's policy not to comment on pending litigation. However, if customers have any questions about these particular tables, they should contact Kmart customer relations at 866-562-7848."
The Sklenars did get their money back but others have had difficulty.
If this has happened to you, take pictures and file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I read about this exact thing on a recall site. I'm sorry, I can't remember where! Maybe Google it and you can see all the other folks who have had the same thing happen.
Good luck!
