I go to get my stepmom coffee mormally 2x's a day at McDonalds drive-thru in Lock Haven,PA. EIGHT out of TEN times they are OUT of decaf coffee!!! I have to sit and WAIT on a pot to brew. I voiced my opinion today that I have to wait so much on a pot of coffee and she should atleast get a free cup the following visit when that happens since she IS such a loyal customer! I mean $84 on coffee ALONE each month and they can't be nice enough to give her a free cup???? Needless to say the lady said "she'd see what she can do" and then sent some young girl out who handed me coffee and left! I am seriously thinking about driving the extra 2 miles to Sheetz for her from now on and getting her coffee not only CHEAPER but it's buy 10 get one free!!! Not only that but if you come to get coffee and it's stale OR empty you get one FREE!! They care about there customers and obviously the Lock Haven McDonalds DO NOT!!!
Based on this what I think McDonalds could do to improve their customer service is:
1.Buy 10 coffees (or even less since their's is so expensive!!)and get one free!
2. If they are out and I have to WAIT I think they should hand out a free coupon on the next coffee purchase.
3. If it is sitting in the pot more than 1 HOUR dump it and make a fresh pot. If I don't go during busy hours she gets OLD coffee!
4. I think due to all my trouble and how I was treated there I should get a gift card for atleast a value meal. That lady was just rude!

OK! I work at a McDonalds and when the lady said she would see what she could do SHE MENT IT!! The reason she sent out another girl is because...ok I guess i will expalain it in detail.
*everyone working has a certain job
*the lady who hands out the food is the presenter. unless there is no one in line behind you it is very likely that she can't bring your coffee out to you.
*the girl who brought it out to you was probably the runner. she is the one who bags the orders. I have done presenting many times and i think that you should ask if the coffee is ready when the person who takes your order asks you what you want...the person running( bags the orders) or the presenter will be wearing a headset for communicating. then the presenter can start you a fresh pot of coffee and you wont be waiting as long.
I am sorry for the coffee not being brewed just for you. but seriously i think we only sell probably 10 cups of decaf coffee a day. and most of our customers are more than happy to wait for a fresh pot. because to me making the customer a FRESH pot is TERRIFIC service. and just because that other place gives you free coffee that doesnt mean they care about their customers they probably just dont want to hear any complaining.
McDonalds probably has the best deals on coffee anyways... (at least ours does.)
You can get senior discounts, free refills, the LARGE is just ONE DOLLAR!
these 2 comments you made make no sense...
>>>>2. If they are out and I have to WAIT I think they should hand out a free coupon on the next coffee purchase.
>>>>3. If it is sitting in the pot more than 1 HOUR dump it and make a fresh pot. If I don't go during busy hours she gets OLD coffee!
OK you said that if you have to wait on a fresh pot then you should get a free coffee...Then you say if the coffee is not fresh then the should make new coffee. PLEASE explain your point?!?!
AND BY THE WAY!!!! That lady was not rude! She made you FRESH coffee and that is what you said you wanted. so why was she rude exactly?
Even though i dont work at the Lock Haven one i still know what McDonalds does for their customers and you should only be writing compliments in my opinion it is a COMPLIMENT to make you a fresh pot EVERYTIME!
Thank you for your listening.

The fact of the matter is that there is a product, which is advertised for sale and it is not available. That is an inconvenience to someone that wishes to purchase it. As far as buying a coffee pot, they are referring to their restaurant experience.
Also, if the customer is a regular there, is she going in around the same time? As a former McDonalds manager it was good to be familiar with 'regular' customers and prepare for their visits during my shift. This helps build good customer service rapport and it IS good customer service to compensate someone if they are inconvenienced within reason. You want to continue their service with you, and an apology and perhaps an incentive is practical.
To the hecklers and smart asses, this is not a forum to show your comedic talent!

Hello,
I am a manager at that McDonald's. I am only one part of a team of people that want to provide service to you and my employer. I am taking your complaint seriously. I will voice your suggestions to the owner of the store, as well. One helpful tool McDonald's has is a customer service number 1-800-244-6227.
I stumbled upon your complaint when I was double checking the address to my store because I was going to print out new map quest directions to area spots for lost overnight customers.
I do not claim perfection. I am only human and I want to see people happy. I hope I error less than I wrong, but there are times I fail, as well. What I do know is I want my customers and employers happy. If you should ever see a red headed manager with a hat at Lock Haven McDonald's and you want to talk to me in person, I would be greatly pleased.
Good day to you and yours, I hope I am of help.
Sincerely,
William Barnhart

So they don't sell enough decaf coffee to keep it brewed 24/7. You can't figure that out by now? Would you rather they pour you some sludge that was brewed 5 hours ago? They're doing you a favor by brewing you fresh coffee.
Stop your whining and complaining, stop demanding free food for having to wait when that's your choice (did you ever think to ask, "do you have decaf coffee brewed up and ready to go?" so if they don't, you can just go somewhere else? of course you didn't), and stop being a baby.

So, you will be mad if you have to wait for fresh coffee, or you will be mad if the coffee is old? How can McDonald's give you the service you want?
It doesn't take that long to brew your fresh, delicious coffee. Take that 3 minutes to relax.
Oh, if you want the corporation to take you seriously, you might want to get someone to proofread for you :)

$84 / month could buy you the most exquisite gourmet coffee to drink AT HOME. I, personally cannot even imagine spending that kind of money on coffee per month!

Another Mickey D's entitlement wench. They're all out tonight.
So on one hand you always want fresh coffee (it has to be dumped and re-brewed if it's been sitting for an hour), but you also want a gift card if God forbid you should have to wait while they make up a fresh pot Just For You!? You just blew all your credibility right there.

hello.. while i do see your letter and sympathize with you for the wait on the coffee, as someone already mentioned that McDonalds is a fast food place and not a coffee place! Also I am surprised that they actually brew decaf coffee as i work for burger king in canada and even have worked for mcdonals and they only brew regular coffee, not decaf.. with that said and i am sure that since i know most people prefer normal coffee as opposed to decaf, your coffee if it was ready might have been a tad old,..(unless you dont mind 2 or 3 hour old coffee), and since if most people dont order decaf is a waste of money if they continue to make a "fresh" pot every 30 minutes or every hour just for any body that MIGHT want decaf over regular coffee!
Now as someone also mentioned, mcdonalds doesnt need to entice people to buy their coffee as they dont compete with a coffee outlet such as starbucks or something else... mcdonals competes with burger king and wendys.. so coffee is the least of their concern!
Actually when people go to a fast food place for coffee, then it should be the freshest possible as most people just drink pop/juice with their value meal and coffee is only usually a big seller up until maybe lunch ... during breakfast mostly!
So my question for you is.. would you rather have fresh hot coffee to go with your meal (if ordering one) or coffee that has been sitting there for the better part of a few hours?
If no one is ordering coffee, then it doesnt make much business sense to start brewing a pot of decaf every hour.... it is just a waste of money meaning they have to raise the prices .. and usually if the money is lost on coffee, they will raise the price of a cup of coffee!

Heh. I work in a restaurant. After the morning rush, I don't brew another pot of coffee unless someone orders it. And certainly not decaf. Very few people drink decaf coffee in my neck of the woods.
It tastes better. It is hot. No one ever complains.
So, what you want Mickey D's to do is to make a fresh pot of coffee EVERY HOUR so that you will never have to wait?
Get over yourself.

For that amount of money and being such a regular you should get fresh coffee. However, since they are really falling short on service, $84 will buy you a VERY nice coffee pot and gourmet coffee that can knock the socks off any pot of McDonald's coffee you can buy. Might save in the gas money too. This is not said as to offend you so please don't take it the wrong way.

I can see from where this frustration comes. And seeing the great amount of money per month the woman spends on coffee alone, I can understand why it is you feel you need special treatment and for the company as a whole to change their business plan to accomodate one customer. However, please don't take this as a personal attack or a cold unfeeling response, but I think your list of demands at the end is a bit frivolous. IF there IS such a good alternative available to you, it might be worth the effort to simply go there and leave Mc Donald's on their own. They'll get the message and make any changes they see fit once they find how much they are losing. I don't mind waiting at all for a fresh pot of coffee over fast service and poor quality, stale coffee that's been there who knows how long because so few people order decaf anyway.
But do let us know if they bow to your demands... it's always an interesting read.
As for the letter itself, for the most part it's ok. Could be less dramatic with fewer "shouts" (capitals). It just dosen't sit well in a professional correspondence.
Good Luck!!!

Sounds to me like you want both ways, if the coffee is being made fresh and you have to wait you complain that you are waiting too long, if the coffee is served to you right away then you complain that it's not fresh, you are just hard to please no matter what happens and you can't have one way or the either. Or perhaps you are out for freebies.

I don't want to take away from your frustration, as I know you are perturbed. That being said, if you preface something with "EIGHT out of TEN times they are OUT of decaf coffee!!!" all I can do is wonder when you will finally give up.
It really is all about math and how much you're willing to put up with. Not just coffee at McDonalds, but anywhere. Too often letters give statistical analysis of the poor proformances and writers wonder why they can't get the service they desire. I don't mean to pick on you, but when something is bad 80% of the time, logic tells me that your going to be unhappy 80% of the time. Those aren't good odds.

McDonald's doesn't have a buy ten get one free program and it is greedy and unreasonable of you to make demands based on what another company does. If you don't like the service and/or product you are receiving from McDonald's, then by all means take your business elsewhere. And I don't see where anyone was rude to you - - you voiced your opinion and they didn't agree - - end of story.

First things first:
McDonald's is a burger joint. Sure, they sell coffee too, because people will buy it. It'd be nice to get fresh, hot decaf (BLEH! but, that's your choice) at all hours, but because it has to be brewed by the batch, there's going to be times when you catch it empty.
McDonald's is an established business. They do not need to entice people to try their coffee, because people are already buying it. If people stop buying their coffee, they will still buy the burgers, shakes and fries. Waiting does not entitle you to a free coffee, any more than waiting for fries entitles you to free fries.
A free value meal is not appropriate here, in my opinion, since you got the coffee you paid for.
That being said: maybe your stepmother could try one of these coffeemakers that uses 'pods' for that single cup.

How on earth was she rude? She could easily have laughed in your face at your ridiculous attempt to score freebies, but she didn't. She was polite and professional.
You wanted something for nothing. You didn't get it.
Oh well.
Incidentally, your stepmother doesn't know how to make a pot of coffee for herself?

Jenny,
Even if I thought your letter had some merit (I don't), McDonalds does not have to offer incentives to eat there. Your ideas about buy 10-get one free would be feasible for a new place, or for a place who is trying to compete with McDonalds.
You have many options available to you, should you choose not to wait for the coffee. I agree that it's annoying to have to wait, but I fail to see how this should entitle you to a free value meal.
Additionally, I fail to see how the lady telling you 'she'd see what she could do' to your request for free coffee, is rude.
