Quality of Chanel's Inimitable Mascara
Posted Fri September 29, 2006 12:00 pm, by Jacquline L. written to Chanel, Inc.
Write a Letter to this Company
I have a complaint that I want to bring to your attention. It concerns the quality of a Chanel Inc product. I hope someone can resolve this.
Here's the problem: I purchased the "Inimitable" Mascara in black a few weeks ago from a specialty department store in my area (Bendel's in New York City). According to the packaging, the ads in the magazines and the salesperson at the Chanel counter, this product is supposed to "lengthen, plump and curl, delivering lush, long-wearing colour so precisely that each lash, even the finest, is perfectly defined and separated". However, this product neither plumps or curls or is long-wearing. After curling my lashes, once I apply this mascara, my lashes start to droop. The drooping of the lashes then leads to the smudging of the mascara over the lower part of my eye, creating a racoon eye effect. This product does not live up to expectations and I've had better results with less pricey mascaras. I would've expected more from a Chanel product.
Over the years, I've regularly used several Chanel cosmetic products and have been very happy with them.
In the future, I will definitely still do business with your company as I am very fond of several of your products, such as the Nail Vernis in Vamp, the Eye Tonic dark circle correction, T-Mat Shine Control and everything from the HydraMax line. This is the first time that I've puchased a Chanel product that I consider to be a complete and utter disaster. I just thought that you should be aware of the problem.
Here's how you can help me: You should really consider reformulating this product. I would also appreciate a refund.
Thanks you for your time. I hope that you are able to address the problem.

Just wanted to give everyone an update...
Chanel customer service sent a very cordial letter in response to my complaint. They provided the adddress of the Chanel US headquarters where I could send my mascara and either receive a refund or exchange it for a product of equal value. I will be returning the mascara and getting a refund for it. Thanks everyone for their comments!

l'oreal always stop producing my favourite mascara, once I find a mascara that will make my lashes look like lashes, since I am from china with no curly lashes. So I have to use a curler to do that and what happens is that l'oreal mascara won't be so wet and make my lashes anti curling again like dior and so on with all the other expensive mascaras! now they are not selling the mascara I am using anymore, and it is getting empty, what should I do?

Lovely job on the letter. I hope that this is one of many that Chanel receives and that they change their formula or, at least, advertise it not as plumping, curling and long-wearing but as droopy, heavy, Tammy Faye mascara.

Oh wow. If only there were some kind of prize people could win for writing clear, well-thought out letters free of ridiculous demands. *Applause*
BTW, I have trouble with that under-eye smearage you describe, and I have had good luck with Neutrogena's Lash Tint. Good luck!

BEAUTIFUL letter!!!!
Great job.
By the way, I have YET to find a mascara that does what it says. If you know of any that do please let me know. I want eyelashes like those women in the commercials but I think to do that I would have to get false ones.

This is a great letter with a valid complaint. I do think they, being a reputable company, would want to refund your money. Many cosmetic companies are allowing refunds on used products that the customer is dissatisfied with. It gives them a competitive edge as long as a customer is not one to abuse the refund policies.
Good luck with your complaint!

Course, if I wasn't a girl, anyway!
But I digress!
Finally! Someone gets it. This is totally how to write a letter to a company.
You told them what was wrong, asked for a reasonable solution and never once got angry or upset.
I hope they at least respond back to you. Maybe you got a mascara from a bad lot, or maybe they weren't aware that their product was not living up to its claims. Either way, you presented valuable insight in a positive way.

This is a very well written letter - - all the details are included and it's easy to read. Nice job.
I just looked up this item on Chanel.com and we're talking about a $26.50 mascara. If it were me, I'd take it back and if the employees at Bendel's want to be snotty or make snide remarks, so be it. You paid a ton of money for this item, aren't happy with it and unless they have a policy that they don't accept returns, then you are entitled to an exchange or refund.
If I purchase a cheap mascara from Target for $6.00 and don't like it then it goes in the trash - - but in this case we're talking about a very high priced item and the letter writer is entitled to her money back.

Return it anyway, get their names and lodge a complaint against them. You wrote this letter very well, I'm sure any complaint against the sales clerks at the makeup counter would be just as concise and totally lacking in demands, threats or exaggerated commentary.

I've experienced two kinds of personalities at makeup counters (and remember, I worked at a department store for a while): (1) snotty and condescending, and (2) overly helpful and fawning. "Normal" was rather rare. Excessively made up was common as well.
But if that's just what you tend to get at makeup counters, I can live with it. Just give me my $15 eye shadow and $17 lipstick and I'll be on my way.

I agree with ticky. While this is an *extremely* well written letter, I don't necessarily feel that you are due a refund.
When trying a new product, it's always a risk. Sometimes you won't like it. It happens to me alot. When it happens, I try to take the time to let them know my opinion. I never ask for my money back.

I don't necessarily agree with the refund angle - you bought something new, tried it and didn't like it.
Anyway, although I have extremely long eyelashes naturally, I have yet to find a mascara that truly lengthens and defines as they advertise.
That being said, this is a very well written letter.
