Store Discounts not offered fairly

Posted Mon October 9, 2006 1:54 pm, by Daniel P. written to Lowe's

I routinely shop at my local Lowe's and am allowed a retired military discount on purchases. I live in Jefferson County NY, near Fort Drum.

While traveling in Florida, near XxxX, I shopped at the nearby Lowe's. I was not offered the same courtesy of the retired military discount on my purchases. The staff and management of the Lowe's was very discourteous and unprofessional and would not honor the retired military discount I get at home.

I expect Lowe's to honor and offer the discount nationwide at all Lowe's stores. What is Lowe's going to do about my purchases in Florida and what is Lowe's going to do to foster my future shopping in Lowe's?

Lowe's doesnt offer discounts on a regular basis. There are certain
times of the year that a military discount is offered but only at
times like July 4th and Memorial Day. If you are getting a discount
at your home store then they are doing it as a courtesy to you. This
is not a corporate wide discount, this is a store level discont. We
have an AFB here and we dont offer every day military discounts. Feel
privelaged that you are getting a discount when you are. Lowe's
offers every day low prices and will price match competitors prices.
Because of this, they do not offer special discounts.

I smell BS. Who travels and goes to Lowes? Were they running some
super promotion in Florida where you needed to buy that
chipper/shredder or 2x4's that you couldn't wait to buy 1000 miles
away in NY?

To clarify by Jeffrey Wed October 11, 2006 @ 9:40 PM

Let's try this again...

While travelling in Florida, I discovered that the discount I get back
home is not honored at all locations. I do realize that the Fort Drum
location probably offers the discount because of the nearby military
base. However, there are lots of retired veterans who no longer live
near a base. I think it would be a great move if you offered this
discount at all of your locations. I'm sure it would encourage lots of
vets to chose you over Home Depot or other home improvement stores. In
turn, they would tell their friends and family about your great
service, and increase your business nationwide.

Because I have always recieved great service, and because I do most of
my shopping at home, I will continue to frequent Lowes for my home
improvement needs. But I do hope that you take my suggestion into
consideration.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel P.

Here's a suggestion for a better letter:

Dear Lowes:

I routinely shop at my local Lowe's and am allowed a retired military
discount on purchases. I live in Jefferson County NY, near Fort Drum.

Daniel,
Thank you so much for serving for our country! I think your question
does have merit but perhaps writing it in the form of a suggestion
would be better. Some times just certain branches allow discounts (if
they are near bases, etc.) I think it would be a good idea for Lowes
(and other retail establishments as well) to give a discount.

Good idea, bad execution of the letter!

I think teachers are some of the most unappreciated people. They make
very low wages, but love what they do, so they keep doing it.
No one would be anything without teachers! Doctors make tons of money,
but what about that doctor's high school teacher who did such a great
job, that he was accepted to a great college, and got into medical
school.

I'm not a teacher, but I gotta give'em credit for all they do.

All the teachers I know make more than I do (and I make a decent
salary) and no one gives me a discount.

Bottom line. No one deserves a discount based on his or her employment
status.

Daniel -

It sounds to me like your local Lowes offers a discount to military
personnel, because they are located close to a base.

This is a wonderful thing for them to *choose* to do, in order to
honor our men and women in the military.

However, not all Lowes stores should be required to honor a military
discount, simply because one that is located near a base does.

And writing a letter full of entitlement and demands is certainly not
going to do anything to encourage them to do so.

Perhaps a better approach: Try re-writing this letter and thank them
for the discount that the Lowes in your hometown offers. Then, SUGGEST
they offer the discount nationwide.
