Scotchgard OXY Carpet Cleaner smells...yucky

Posted Sun November 12, 2006 12:00 pm, by Chris M. written to Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company

Write a Letter to this Company

I purchased a bottle of Scotchgard OXY Carpet Cleaner plus Stain Protector. With the 3M name and reputation, I thought I couldn't go wrong. According to the label, it cleans and protects with a pleasant smell. Sadly though, that pleasant smell actually smells like vomit.

I used this product one time to clean the floor mats in my car, and as soon as I sprayed it, the smell of vomit hit me full force. It took a long time and lots of Febreeze to get rid of the vomit-like smell. I am hoping that this is not supposed to be the smell and that I just received a dud bottle. The only coding numbers I could find on the bottle were: 057 04 20:59 A

I would have taken this back to Walmart, but I had thrown away the reciept and had actually purchased it a few months before using it (as an impulse buy). Please make this situation right, and let me know if in fact the vomit-like smell is the intended "fragrance". I have emptied the bottle and discarded it, so that I wouldn't accidentally use it again.

It is AWFUL. I did this before and thought it was from what I was
cleaning off the carpet. It obviously wasnt, because it just came out
of the bottle. It smells like wet, moldy chemical, with a side of
vomit. (Is that better than just vomit, because it's THAT bad!)

It's TERRIBLE. I have a HUUUUUGE headache and need to find out how to
get the smell. If anyone figured out how to get the smell out, let me
know!!! PLEASE! I would have preferred the cat vomit!!

When I purchase a product that I am not happy with, for whatever
reason, I call the 800 number located on the product itself. I explain
to the people and try to describe the problem to the best of my
ability. Usually, I get great results. You might want to try that
route, also.

IMHO, this was a good letter because companies need to know what is
going on with their products. We can stand for a few more "new and
improved" labels on the items we purchase! ;)

I emailed them several years ago to complain about their "skunky"
smelling packing tape. We used a ton of it at work, and it really did
smell like skunk!

Next thing I know, I had product reps showing up at my office (I
live/work near 3M's headquarters) with all kinds of freebies (3M has
TONS of cool products, including water-proof bandages, cool office
stuff, etc.) and wanting me to try different kinds of tape and let me
know what I thought of the smell. They were worried they had either a
bad batch or a bad product. They took it very seriously.

I agree completely with your use of the word "vomit." And believe me,
judging by their product reps's interest in the tape, they will
appreciate your specific descriptive word in your letter.

I hope you hear back from them!

What's wrong with using the word "vomit" to describe the smell? That's
what it smells like. He isn't saying it smells like puke or barf; that
would be a little childish.

That just reminded me by tickytack Mon November 13, 2006 @ 2:47 PM

I'm starting to wonder if they don't all smell 'that way'.

I regularly use "Spot-Shot" on stains, but if its not in a
well-ventilated area, the smell of it is nauseating.

Heehee - nauseating. LOL

I once sent my husband to the store to purchase a carpet spray (brand
specific...I'm not sure). It too smelled of vomit which has a very
distinct odor. I doubt that this was an intended fragrance and as you
stated, may have been a "bad batch".

I don't know about your Walmart, but at mine I don't need a receipt to
return anything. I would have just went and told them you lost the
receipt. They will simply issue you a gift card. That's what happens
at my Walmart anyways...

They say vomit and I can associate a smell with it.
When you are trying to describe something as having a poor aroma,
there is only so many ways to say this and give an example.

by tickytack Posted Mon November 13, 2006 @ 9:38 AM

But it really is somewhat childish to describe something as akin to
vomit - there are other ways to describe it. Merely saying it has an
unpleasant smell is better than calling it vomit scented.

It's a professional letter - not your personal blog.
