Missing cat lost again by the Carson Animal Shelter

Posted Thu January 4, 2007 12:00 pm, by Tracy H. written to Carson Animal Shelter

My cat was missing. When I found out she was in the Animal shelter on Friday December 29th, I immediately went over there to claim her. I needed sufficient papers to show ownership and that she had her shots. I told them I would bring them back the next day. They told me I would have to wait because of the New Years holiday they wouldn't be open, that they wouldn't be open until Tuesday.

On Tuesday I went there with my papers and the amount they were asking to get her back, I was told 15 minutes prior to me getting there, that my cat was taken to a clinic in their vacinty to get some shots and during that time she bolted out and escaped.

I was so upset. I couldn't believe it. I asked them how this can be, that I told you when I put a hold on her that she had all her shots. They didn't have good answers for me, nor could they even look me in the face. How can people in this profession be so careless in losing a pet? They forgot and left the door open?

I was told that I could come back at a later time. Or they would call me as soon as they caught her because they had traps up to catch her. One trap is all they had up. I doubt very much my baby would go back into one of those traps. So I asked if I could come back at night, which I did, and there was no luck.

Well, it is now the six days and I still havent got my cat back. I feel in my heart that something is not right. Or that they are not being honest with me.

Be more responsible, find my cat. And apologize for your carelessness and fix your problem.

Your cat wouldnt have been there had you not let her out. If you knew
the first day that you needed her medical information, why did you
wait till the next day? Its not a kennel, its an animal shelter. They
caught her once, if she ran away from that situation, why is it their
responsibility to catch her again?

I hope you find her if you haven't already. Try praying. God might
take a while to answer, but it's worth a try even if you don't believe
in God.

I feel SO sorry for you and your cat. If an animal shelter is careless
and wouldn't even look you in the face, chances are they're treating
the animals there cruelly. I'd do a bit of investigating if I was you.

Tracy,

First, why do you let your cat out anyway? Cats should stay indoors.

Second, if they did truly lose the cat that way, someone is very
incompetent. But, and I hate to say it, your cat was probably put
down. I work in rescue and that happens all the time. Someone either
didn't care or screwed up. They won't tell you that but I'm betting
that's what happened to her. Sorry.

Tracy, didn't you get enough of the 'Oh, you poor thing' on this forum
so you had to vent on another, also? Didn't get much sympathy there,
did you?

'How can people in this profession be so careless in losing a pet?
They forgot and left the door open?' The gist of comments on the
other forum were 'how could YOU be so careless that your cat went
missing?'

I'm glad you don't have an 18-month old child if you're that
irresponsible.

missing cat
by sparky2469 Posted Sat January 6, 2007 @ 6:09 PM

I didn't know that my room mate had confrontation with neighbor
previously and had called the humane society on their dogs, prior to
me moving in. I guess it is called a pay back. I really can't answer
that question. I have yet to go ask but I'm afraid to do so at this
time. On the other hand, I went to the city shelter and seen my cat in
a caged. I talked to her, and assured her I would be back ASAP but
was told that I couldn't come back the next day, because of the
holiday, that I would have to come back on following tuesday. I was
very disappointed, and agreed to it, with no other choice. I needed
the
papers from the my vet to show proof of ownership and that she was up
to date with shots. On Tuesday I arrived and was told that 15 minutes
to my arrival that the staff took it upon themselves to transfer her
to the clinic to receive shots for rabies. which I found out later
that she was not scheduled and was not even on record to have this
done. I know this sounds to some people like its nothing things
happen. So I asked the Shelter If this has ever happened before and
they said, Never. Then later they said these things happen sometimes.
Which one is telling the truth? I am on the 8th day now still waiting
for my baby to come back. I cant' express how sad this is making me
feel, I just cant say no more. I'm praying for her safety and her
return every minute of the day. Thank you to all that are supportive
it means a great deal to me. Thank you very much

really made me feel better to see so many responses and well wishes
for the return of my Sugar. I will try to reply to all the messages
concerning my baby. But as for right now. I am still out looking for
her. I wanted to clear a few things up. A neighbor behind my house
trapped her (again) using honey baked ham. That is how she ended up at
the Animal Shelter. Yes, she has been licensed for the last two
years. Since I rescued her, and her brother whom I bottled fed from
the time they were five hours old. We bonded and since I have no
children, they are my children. They both have their personalities
that are unique. Right now I feel apart of me is missing and I will
not give up until I find her.

How awful!

I think this is at least the 2nd or 3rd incidence we've seen about
shading pet shelters or pet adoption organizations.

Was this a private shelter or one run by the city you live in? & I
don't get how you would prove ownership of a cat unless your city
requires cats to be licensed like dogs (in Cleveland, it's an option
to help you retrieve a lost cat, but it's not mandatory.)
If they hadn't seen the paperwork certifying which shots your cat had,
why would they transport the animal out of the facility before they
knew for sure?

& did I read correctly that they wanted you to pay a FEE to get your
cat back? Did they actually let you SEE your cat before they sent you
home for the paperwork? That would have made me wonder if they were
scamming you for money if you didn't physically see the cat and verify
it was yours before ponying up money to get it back.

It's so sad that any organization that claims to care for animals
would be so low.

I feel so awful that they lost your cat. I hope it gets worked out
for you. I'd be heartbroken if my Georgie got lost.

But I agree with others - I've had my cats for 15 years, but I
couldn't come up with proof of ownership . . .very fishy.

I also agree that you should contact the local news stations . . this
doesn't sound right - and I thought shelters have vets to give shots
right there.

I confess: I lost a dog once at a veterinary clinic where I worked.

I came in on Sunday morning to take him out and he slipped out of his
collar and took off while I was walking him. It was awful. I
searched for him for hours. I called the owners and they came up to
help. No luck - we didn't find him. I felt awful. Luckily he came
back on his own on Thursday.

It's not always a matter of being responsible. Sometimes,
unfortunately, things happen. Trust me, I am sure both the clinic and
the shelter feel terrible.

I really hope you get your cat back.

Was your cat micro-chiped? IF not then when you get her back, (and I
really hope that you do) you might want to have her micro-chiped. I
work in the Veterinary field, so I know that when ever lost or stray
animals are picked up by a shelter the first thing they do is scan
them for a chip that directly links them to you. I am so sorry that
this happened to you, I hope that everything works out.

My optimistic side wants to believe your cat was simply adopted by
someone else. My cynical side agrees with the others - they put your
cat down.

My older cat was a rescue from the shelter and sometimes I wonder
about the people who had her before me. She is a beautiful,
affectionate animal and I want to think someone misses her and worries
about her, instead of (as I suspect) someone simply got tired of her
and dumped her on the street to die. It gives me shivers to think of
her being put down because someone decided dealing with her was too
much of a hassle. I wish no-kill shelters were more common.

I can't imagine - or more accurately, don't want to imagine losing
either of my fuzz balls and you have my sympathies for your loss.

This story is so weird. I wonder why they were taking the cat for
shots? Doesn't make sense. And why wouldn't an animal shelter be
open 7 days a week? Even for holidays it should be open. People
still have to be there to take care of the animals. And if they were
taking a pet out to get shots as they said, why was the cat not in a
cage? Nothing makes sense to me here. Sounds like the Carson Animal
Shelter is running some really shady business. I would be so upset if
I were you. Even the first time I went, if they wouldn't give me my
dog, I would have been really mad and would not have left until they
did. This is absolutely terrible that they lost your cat on you. I
don't know what else to say. I'd just be really upset. I hope you
get your cat back. I can't believe they didn't even appologize to
you. That's the least they could have done.

Wow Tracy, I hope you get your kitty back. What the last poster said
is correct, they don't send animals out for shots, the vet comes
there. Most shelters have a min. time frame to hold animals waiting
for them to be claimed. I hate to say this but my guess is either
they had your cat put down or adopted her to someone else already. I
realize you had claimed her and went back with your paperwork but
these shelters screw things up constantly. Honestly I think alot do
more harm than good. Good luck to you!

This is a really tough one that doesn't make sense. Animals are not
taken out of a shelter to be seen by vets - - it just isn't done as
vets comes to the shelter. Why would an animal shelter remove a cat to
take him/her to a vet to get "some shots"? This simply isn't done
because if the animal isn't claimed they are going to be euthanized so
they are not going to waste money on shots. And there is no way that
your cat "bolted out and escaped" as animals are secured in carriers
by professionals before they are moved. And why did you leave your
cat at the shelter over the weekend - - why didn't you go home, get
the documentation that was required and bring her home as soon as
possible.

I, too, feel in my heart that something is not right as your story
just doesn't add up. How did you find out your cat was at the
shelter? Weren't you told what you needed to claim her?
