They were laughing because you complained over a little chicken fry.

Secondly, you were on a timer. You're not supposed to check your food,
[I work at burgerking] we get in trouble as soon as the timer goes
over 2 minutes. If you wish to check it, pull up and then check it. If
somethings wrong come inside and ask for a refund/exchange.

I agree though that they were kind of rude to you, laughing. And even
the guy honking was rude. I really hate it when I have a customer at
the window and someone behind them starts honking. It's like "excuse
me? Respect, you'll get your turn the world isn't ending yet, fatty".

They were laughing at you because you threw a fit over a bent chicken
fry. Besides, defective generally means that something doesn't work in
the way it was intended to. As long as the chicken fry was edible and
could in turn at nurishment to your body (as much as fast food can
anyway) then it was not defective.

Did it ever cross your tiny race-card-flipping mind that they had run
out of Sprite? Perhaps the delivery was mixed up, or the machine was
broke. And as for that assinine comment about the defective fry -
Jeebus, are you full of yourself or what? Plus you want free meals FOR

I worked at Burger King for five years. We didn't always have certain
drinks available because, gee, machinary breaks sometimes. Not all the
food at Burger King is the same uniform shape. And just because
employees are laughing and talking while working doesn't mean they're
laughing at you.

Perhaps it wasn't so much as a race issue. I currently work with BK.
Alas it is a crappy job and I will be happy to leave. But if it is a
rush time, during lunch more so... soda is very hard to replace in the
back rooms, it is heavy and most people have problems with it. One of
them people who are able may be busy at that time and not able to fill
that order for that soda at that time. If your time was about four
min. I can already say that someone had a larger order in front of
you. Our only goal on drive-thur is to keep time down, really to about
2:15. Whenever someone gives us a horrid problem that is going to take
up more time, we usually get pissed off and make comments. Then you
checking your order again I'm sure annoyed people. Other poeple want
to be served too. You're one out of a million to us. Yes we try, sorry
everything isn't perfect all the time. But people who do this are the
people that give me bad days.

It sounds to me after reading your Applebee's letter, you feel as you
are entitled to special treatment since you are Hispanic. I call it
BullCrap. I at first thougth this was about a chicken fry...but nope,

To be fair (my post is below), I think it's right that this woman
complained as she'd asked for nine chicken fries, not eight, and
nobody should have to pay for thin air at a place that is run on
profits. It's just wrong the way she went about it (see post below)

I saw this linked to from a forum and my first thought was "you've GOT
to be kidding me!" - I couldn't believe that someone had pulled the
race card just because she'd had poor service at Burger King (which, I
don't know about the US, but is usually the case in the UK) and a
mistake with her order. Have you ever stopped obsessing with the
colour of your skin and wondered to yourself "Could their attitudes
have been because instead of politely telling them they had made a
mistake, I told them in a rude way that was totally uncalled for?"? Or
that they were laughing not because you'd complained that a "chicken
fry" was missing (whatever that is) but that you were also complaining
about its defect?

Try telling your story to someone who has genuinely been treated
differently because of their skin colour. Try telling it to someone
who has suffered abusive comments. Try telling it to someone who has

I recently went to the local burger king and got a small curly fries.
I could not believe the lack of quality control issues! First of
all,they told me they ran out of curly fries. I don't think they
could have run out of curly fries, I think they refused to serve them
to me because a) I'm white and they weren't b) I have naturally curly
hair and I distinctly heard them making rude jokes about curly haired
people in the background. Secondly, 4 of the fries in this package
were broken into little pieces. Thirdly, there was more salt on some
of the fries than others. I contacted the CEO of Burger King and they
came right out and told me that, since I ate the fries, that they
weren't going to do anything about it.

I think Burger King should go out of business. BOYCOTT BURGER
KING!!

I think he was honking at you - I can hardly hear myself when I worked
in BK's drive through over the sound of motors. How could he have
heard what the employees inside the building and window were saying to
you?

As well, who knows if they were even laughing at you? I was always
making my coworkers there laugh with my pantomiming and behaviour
(which was not unappropriate, but i was 'flamboyant' and posed
dramatically when getting food or hitting buttons - kind of like Jim
Carrey would).

Maybe it was Clark Kent behind you that he heard what they were saying

Crooked chicken fry? I woulda got a good laugh out of it and moved

One time at BK I ordered a Whopper With Cheese, Only Lettuce, Only
Tomato, Only lIght Mayo.

And I got it - a Whopper with cheese, ONLY those three things (no
cheese).

I was a bit upset, but I didnt yell at them. I did get what I wanted!
I found it amusing after I got to work and calmed down. And I ate it,
and made a joke about it next time I went (I stil tease them about it
and they take it in good faith, and I check my food at the counter
now)

I believe "not available", in reference to the Sprite, meant that
their Sprite was merely out at the moment, not that they didn't stock
it at all, as you imply in your letter.

Also, do you really have nothing better to do with your life than
measure up the chicken fries for exact length and proportion? And I

Incredible - do you like Burger King that much that you would use the

This letter made me laugh. There is just so much wrong here, I don't
know where to start.

First of all, why is it that when someone of a different ethnic
background runs into bad customer service, they feel it is because of
their race? It can't be anything other than a race issue?

Let's pick this apart piece by piece....

1st -

you say it was because of the woman in the window's behavior. How in
the heck is the person BEHIND you going to know how the person in
front of you is behaving? They can only see the person talking to you,
not what they are saying to you or vice versa. It's more likely that
this guy started honking because it was taking too long. I am willing
to bet - he was honking at you.

This is a very petty and ridiculous complaint.

You got 9 fries, as ordered. One was an odd shape, but I am sure it
was probably the same approximate weight as the others. As my mother
always said, "It all goes down the same way."
I am sure there was no way that the person who put your order together
could possibly know your race, and the deformed fry was not given to
you on purpose, but was just an oddity in a large bag of fries.

I realize you used the drive-thru to save time, and had a small child
in the car, but if it was that important to you, then you should have
pulled to the side as a common courtesy to the others in line, and
then taken your child with you into the restaurant to straighten it
out.

You are responsible for this whole mess getting so out of hand,
because you insisted on making such a huge deal out of a misshapen
chicken fry.

I am sorry that you probably face a lot of discrimination on a daily
basis. I can't begin to know what that must be like, but to cry racism
over such petty things cheapens the whole issue when there is a
legitimate claim.

Okay I am going to respond to this one: As an assistant manager at a
burger king in canada, I can safely say this letter is so full of
flaws and here they are:

First, burger king does run out of product (including sprite), it
happens the truck might have been coming that afternoon, or even the
next day! As a manager that actually does the ordering, we arent
perfect, sometimes we miscount stuff and realize that stuff wasnt
ordered, so either we have to get it from another store (if its within
the same company) or we wait until the next truck...but there are
other soft drinks as you put it available..i.e. coke, rootbeer, diet
coke, orange..etc etc!!

Second, Not all chicken fries are straight, nor do they advertise that
they are..some might be crooked, you said yours was small and bent..
well if its bent, of course its going to look smaller.. I can safely
say this is the first complaint of this kind I have ever
heard..seriously!

third, although be it the employees were laughing, they shouldnt have
been laughing so you can see them, but i would honestly guarantee that
they werent laughing at you racialy..but because you were actually
complaining about a crooked chicken fry and during the lunch line in
drive thru! now don't you think that the other people behind you are
also in a hurry? If you are in a hurry .. then there are going to be
others as well! if i saw someone get their bag and was still sitting
in drive thru.. i would honk too if i was caught in the middle of
drive thru, and i wouldnt be honking at the "lady in the window", I
would be honking at the car at the window.. which in this case, WAS
YOU!

fourth, Pulling the race card out was just plain rude, assuming people
are laughing at you because of the color of your skin, you my young
friend are paranoid, and maybe you have every right to be, I don't
know what has happened in your life, but seriously, this wasn't a
racial case, and I would actually think this twice before complaining
about this any more, you are going to make yourself look like more of
an idiot than you really are!

fifth, If in the future you want to check your order for like..oh
forever, then walk inside and order as you are not drive thru
material, people that hold up windows at a drive thru for a long time,
well the employees are certainly going to remember you, it would be
pretty hard not to since you made yourself look like a complete .....
well you know over a chicken fry!!

In conclusion, nothing in life is ever perfect, not the person who
does the ordering for that burger king, the chicken fries are not
going to be perfectly straight, and life in general isnt going to be
perfect either.. and if you want to ruin someone else's life and for
what? over a chicken fry, go right ahead, but what comes around, will
surely go around, and whenever you get a job, someone will do that
race card against you!

didn't want to discriminate against it, so I ate it. It tasted just
as good as the straight, perfect ones.

It does make sense that there might not be Sprite available all the
time. Maybe nobody's been able to get new syrup loaded into the
machine; maybe the machine itself was broken; maybe a ridiculously
atypical number of people had showed up wanting Sprites earlier in the
day. It happens. And given that a whole lot of this letter leads me
to want to say "Oh, Virginia, it happens. Deal with it", I'd think
you'd prefer to leave something this petty out -- unless you believe
that BK customers who are not Hispanic were getting Sprites with no
problem?

Four minutes in line, especially during the lunch rush, is not a big
deal. Thirty seconds to count nine chicken fries, on the other hand,
does seem like a bit much, especially since they shouldn't have been
loading other stuff on top of the chicken fries in your bag when the
only thing they did was to trade out chicken.

People who work in fast food restaurants need to vent sometimes. A
lot of people show up and treat them badly, or make ridiculous
demands, or accuse them of various kinds of unacceptable behavior when
they haven't done anything wrong. They shouldn't have been laughing
at you where you could see them and if one of them made a racial
comment he or she shouldn't have done that either. But the BK
employees, all of *whom* (not which -- you'd say "all of which" when
talking about the sort of thing you'd call "it" rather than "he" or
"she" and this is a particularly unfortunate moment to make that
particular error) come from a different racial group than you do, were
almost certainly responding to the difference in which side of the
drive-through window you and they were on.

And if you found it embarassing to be told to pull forward, I bet the
woman working at the window found it embarassing to be accused of a
particularly vile act just because you are particular about how your
chicken fries look.

I'm glad you're a proud Hispanic woman and I'm glad that you're
modeling that for your children. I hope that by the time they grow up
we will live in a world where children do not really need to be
educated on how to handle oneself in a society that sometimes treats
members of certain groups badly, but right now it's an important
lesson for them to learn. But being a proud Hispanic woman and
modeling that pride for your child does not require you to denigrate
what I hope is a proud African-American woman, let alone to demand
that she be fired from her job for doing little to nothing wrong. It
really doesn't.

If you were able to identify a specific worker who made a racial
comment and report to the manager who spoke to you exactly what that
worker said to you, then I hope that manager would take immediate
action (although you would still not be entitled to decide what action
that would be).

As it is, though, I really hope that you are able to get past this,
boycott this restaurant or all of Burger King if you think that's
important, and get back to raising your kids to be the fine people I
know you want them to be.
