Useless employees and rude

Posted Thu May 31, 2007 6:58 pm, by cherie d. written to Walmart

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I went to the walmart#2174 on 141 Springfield
Road in Westfield, ma 01089 phone# 413-572-0400I went there to get a site to store pickup
and waited 1/2 hour before someone would wait
on me, I had to go find an employee on the other side of store to have them page someone to the site and no one showed up. Then exactly
8 men came out of the back and when I asked them for help or to page someone they told me
they were on their break and would not help me
finally after at least 12 people walked by me
and ignored me, a woman was just coming on to her shift and she helped me. I go to this store
every week and buy at least $100.00 worth of merchandise and I never can find anyone on sales floor to help me and when you do ask for
help they tell you its not their department.
and they do not even call anyone to help me.
If your store wasnt so close and best prices I would not shop their but I do say after today
experience I am not going there for a while and I am telling my friends and family about this episode.

Straighten out your system on site to store,
and also let your people know that even though
they are on break 1 minute of their time would
not kill them to page someone to help the public, if it wasnt for me and others there would not be any walmart for them to work.

You know what lady, the men on their break were not being rude. They
can actually loose their jobs for doing any work or customer service
while on their break. That is walmart policy. I work for them so just
chill out and it is not a big deal.

You tell me if this happened to you that you all would be just tickled
pink just waiting and waiting
and those people on break I just found out did not
want to help, that was their excuse because they were
not on break, they just did not want to HELP now tell
me your reply. I was not rude to them either I nicely
asked for help and was ignored. I also all you know
at alls thanked many times the woman who did help me
and also told the manager that she was wonderful so
now whats your great smart alec response. were you
there?

I guess I understand your problem, but you need to give some more
thought the next time you type out a complaint letter. Your letter
gives me a headache just trying to read it! There are so many sentence
fragments and run-ons. The last paragraph is just one long run-on
sentence! If you want Wal-Mart to take your complaint seriously, then
you need to type your letter out in complete sentences.

Cherie,

I understand your frustration, but you are letting it cloud your
ability to be rational.

As I said in response to one of your reseponses below, if you were the
employee being asked to help out on your only break (while off the
clock and unpaid) how willing would YOU be to lend a hand?

It might seem simple and cut and dry to you, but if it took you 30
minutes to find help, what makes you think an employee on break can
get you help in just 1 minute?

Furthermore, calling the employees "useless and rude" is probably not
the most effective way to get your point across. Again, I get that
you're mad, but if I called you "useless and rude" would you want to
help me?

I can guarantee the attitude you display in this letter was at least
as irritable and short as it was in the store.

You also threaten to stop shopping there for a while and that you'll
be "tattling" on them to all your friends and relatives. Have you
ever heard the phrase, "You catch more flies with honey than
vinegar?"

Bottom line, no one begrduges you being irked about not being able to
get the help you need, but if you want to get help, exhibiting an
attitude like you've shown here is NOT going to achieve that.

Next time, try our "pre-write area" or wait a week before writing.

Letters sent in anger and full of hostility and frustration rarely get
the response desired.

WM has very strict policy guidelines about associates conducting work
when not on the clock. It is actually a terminatible offense. This
stems from the lawsuits that WM has gotten slapped with by former
associates claiming the stores made them work off the clock, so
they're trying to avoid that.

So many letters on PFB are about what someone considers poor customers
service and simply stating that they are not pleased should be enough.
Retail employees are real people and they respond to how they are
treated. I have shopped at Walmart for years and have never, ever had
what I would consider to be bad service - - but then again I realize
where I am and don't expect it. I walk around until I find what I'm
looking for because I view it as a self-serve environment which is in
part how they keep their prices low.

Below I said that getting help would take about 30 seconds, but as I
read your post, I think I was being overgenerous with the time. From
my own experience, it usually takes much longer. You could spend your
whole break just trying to find help.

And I also agree about the tone of the letter.

I think that this is what is wrong with the work ethic we have now,
everyone is constantly on break. I don't think it is a big deal to
take a minute out of my break to say, "just a second, I'm actually on
lunch but let me see who I can find to help you" and then find
someone. Give me a break.

I used to work full-time retail, and it always seemed that as soon as
I started walking to the breakroom, at least 10 people would stop me
for help. Apparently I exuded some kind of "on a break" aroma that
made people want to interrupt it. The problem was that I was usually
on a strict time schedule, whether for lunch or otherwise, and even a
few minutes on the floor meant a few minutes less for me to get a
break.

However, I do agree that the least the employees could have done was
called someone to help. That takes what, 30 seconds? When I was
stopped on my way to a break, my usual response was, "I'm sorry; I'm
actually on break right now. However, I'd be happy to get someone else
to help you."

What in the world is up with the spacing? (it gave me a headache too!)
But yea... its usually company policy for employees on break to BE on
break.. what if they were to get hurt helping somehow? When I worked
at Walgreens, I was supposed to stay in cosmetics 100% of the time
during my shift (yea like THAT happened) and was supposed to call
someone for other areas of the store (yea I know its not THAT big but
... yea) Companies have their policies.

When I worked in a large electronics store, complaints like these we
VERY common. Mainly because we DID have designated departments that
were we not supposed to stray from. Plus, I could tell you anything
you needed to know about computers, but im just stupid when it comes
to TVs or car stereo. Yes, departments should have the appropriate
amount of employees, for the customers sake as well as the employees.
Often times to cut costs, especially during the day employers dont
staff the appropriate amount of people to work... it a no win
situation for anyone!

Judging by the writing of this letter (and a few of your other
letters) this seems like it was exaggerated.

however, its tasteless to complain about people on their well deserved
breaks. No matter where you work, how much you make or what your
position is, you deserve a break.

Walmart will never change. ever. as a company they care little for
customers and even less for their employees. "if it wasnt for me and
others there would not be any walmart for them to work." Quoted from
you directly. Best advice, dont stand for it, stop shopping there.

I agree with PaintedLady. You have a valid complaint, except for the
part about the people on break not helping. Those employees likely
work VERY HARD for their breaks and are entitled to them.

I agree that you should have been helped sooner, but NOT from the
employees on break. First of all, they deserve an uninterrupted
break, and second, this is a firing offense (working "off the clock"
in any way, shape or form) at many stores these days, and I'm sure you
don't want causing someone to lose their job on your
conscience...right?
