Stop the Pain, Verizon!

Posted Fri June 29, 2007 12:00 pm, by Michael R. written to Verizon Local Telephone (and FIOS)

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

In October 2006, I fell for a door to door scam from Verizon where they were going to provide me with Fios (fiber optic) television, Internet and Phone service for "one low" monthly fee. The Fios Internet service is slower than when I had DSL, the television user interface is extremely poorly constructed and the telephone service costs are outrageous. Today, I called them about a bill that was about twice of what it should have been and inquired about getting rid of all Verizon services. I was informed that I would have to pay a total of about $160.00 in early termination fees to get out of the contract. I can get the same service I have now with Comcast for around $110.00 per month (inclusive of taxes and service charges). My latest "one low" price fee from Verizon is $187.90. Since October, when I got scammed, I have paid Verizon well over $1400.00 and it will cost me another $160.00 to stop the pain? I fully intend on posting my complaint to every blog, website, and Internet chat room I can find. I have had it. Repeated calls do nothing, their customer service is poor and they do not care about service, all they want is your money.

Stop the pain!!! Let me out of the contract which is no less than a bait and switch scam without paying you anymore money.

We had the same door to door campaign in my area. It's by no means a
"Scam". Fios itself comes in three different "strengths" or
"flavors". Depending on which plan you signed up for, it's plausable
you are NOT being "SCAMMED" or "overcharged".
When they get an area set up for fios service, they send reps out to
drum up as many connections as possible. Same for Comcast and other
companies.
Quite often they have a few "introductory offers" and package deals
(say 99 a month for 3 or 6 or 12 months then you get charged the going
rate once that period of time is up.

Have you read the fine print on your contract? Do you know what you
signed up for and under what terms?

The threat of posting everywhere RARELY helps unless all other options
are exhausted.

Sorry you were treated so badly by Verizon. Be sure to place a
consumer complaint with the federal communications commission. You
can do so here:

I have Verizon FIOS, internet, home phone and mobile phone service.
It's all bundled on one bill, and it is definitely cheaper than what I
paid for all those services separately (with separate companies).

We are very happy with our FIOS service and have far more channels
than we could possibly watch. When we had a problem with our box the
service tech came out on a Sunday afternoon to fix it. And it wasn't a
problem that affected our viewing - we just couldn't access the
program guide).

I have also heard many complaints about Verizon, but I guess I have
just been fortunate so far.

I think all companies as large as Verizon (and Dell, and just about
any bank) have large numbers of both happy and unhappy customers.

It's unlikely they'll work with you. Verizon ended up charging me
over $600 for "service" during a period of time after my contract had
expired, and continued to charge late fees on the balance for that
"service"...I realize that was probably my fault in some convoluted
way, but they absolutely refused to consider the fact that I might not
have needed to pay for something I didn't receive.

I have to assume that you took more than the standard television
package and that's why your bill is higher. We accepted our cable
company's triple play (all three services). It was advertised at $99
per month but because my husband just "has to have" every channel
known to man, we ended up with the gold package and it runs about $150
per month. It's still cheaper than what we were paying for all three
separately which was over $200 per month.

You need to ask them to break down exactly what you are getting. Are
you being charged for more channels or pay per view? On demand?
These are all extra, above the package pricing. I don't understand
what you mean by "telephone service costs". As far as the phone goes,
it's one price for everything except maybe international calling.

It seems you have a problem with the FIOS internet access. There is
no way it's slower than DSL unless you had 3.0 DSL and then is should
be about the same. I would look into that.

You are going to get equally as nickled and dimed with Comcast (or any
cable provider) as you are with Verizon. They are all pretty much the
same.

They're charging you more than your contract says? If so, then you
definitely have a case for demanding that they charge you what your
contract says.
