Progressive Commercial - Who Wants To Be Quiet?

Posted Sun July 29, 2007 1:27 pm, by Robert B. written to Progressive Auto Insurance

Write a Letter to this Company

Every time I see the "Crazy Woman with Kids" commercial, as I like to call it, I have to wonder what it is that you are trying to get across to your potential customers.

You know, the one where the Progressive rep stops by to deliver papers to a frazzled woman who is watching a house filled with four little kids. It's cute how giddy and weird she is when she greets the guy, but then when she closes the door we hear...

"WHO WANTS TO BE QUIET?!?!" *WHAM*

What the heck is that supposed to be? The first time I saw this commercial I thought it sounded like a gunshot... further viewings made me also consider that it could be one of the children only being hit by a 2x4 instead of being shot. ;-)

I mean, it's a funny commercial... it doesn't offend me or anything... I'm just not sure what it is you're wanting us all to think with that last little part. Kinda creepy.

If it makes anyone feel better, I saw this commercial yesterday, and
they took the sound of the "wham" out. The commercial hasn't been
changed, but the loud noise has been removed. I guess they got a lot
of complaints and removed the sound byte as to not offend people.

Maybe you should just turn your TV off. If your writing a letter to
complain about something like that, you REALLY need to get out more.
Kids break things, parents are busy, and the commercial was trying to
emphasize that. Are you sheltered?

Was it a complaint? by April Smith Thu August 2, 2007 @ 1:47 PM

I wonder if some people have already complained about this, since the
one shown in my area cuts off right after she closes the door and
says, "who wants to be quiet?"

Actually, if you watch the commercial again, she tells the guy from
progressive that she has 4 boys and that taking them anywhere together
is a big hassle. In the meantime, they are using those huge foam
swimming pool noodles to bash each other over the head and jump on the
couch. I was surprised that you were able to hear what she says after
she closes the door. i hear the crash, but even after turning our tv
volume up, I didn't catch it. I think the crash is just that- a crash.
Where did you grow up that this sounds like a gunshot? I think
progressive's point was- busy Mom, Progressive comes to you, relieves
some of your stress.

The early press on the show says that the guys in the commercials are
not reprising their roles in the series : (

That sounds like my house on a daily basis and I only have two.

The banging sound reminded me of what it sounded like the day my kids
broke the coffee table. Someone jumped on it, but amazingly nobody
knows who did it.

I'm glad you didn't take offense to that. I personally think it's a
cute commercial.

It can be anything lol Really. We moms wind up in all types of
situations with the kids at the least predictable time. It might look
worse if she appeared evil to the guy and THEN you hear the noise lol.
You just have to let your imagination in on that one. Besides, they
got you thinking about Progressive right? So it worked. No proof of
child abuse there.

I think the "wham" involves a kid and a coffee table. I haven't seen
this commercial in a little while, but I seem to recall seeing, behind
the woman through the partially open door, a kid on a sofa ready to
jump onto the coffee table.

Remember the minivan commercial that very clearly implied
wife-swapping and pedophilia? I complained about that one, as did
others, and that commercial got yanked FAST.
