Sad Maybe? I don't know if it's just ME but does this seem like a bit much for one family to endure? A decison to dine at Red Lobster turned into "That was the biggest mistake ever." and goes into details no reasonable person should ever endure. I see sense enough to speak up to a hostess to ask for a refill, would it be that much more of a stretch to ask for a manager?
But No.
Instead, we somehow manage to consume the food and get our takeout order and we expect to get a full refund in the amount of Fifty Seven Dollars and Eighteen Cents, you know, for the service, food, or enjoyment they never got.
Sad Maybe?

Does your family really love Red Lobster. Is it really your favourite restaurant (or used to be in your letter). Are these facts true or are you just buttering them up to get your gift certificate. If Red Lobster was your favourite restaurant and this one small incident changes your mind then hopefully they will say give you a "good-bye, you will be missed letter." In the mail without the gift certificate.

While I have no opinion either way on the letter... I NEED to drink while I eat. I need to. I have abnormally large tonsils that can make it hard to swallow my food. I have to have something to drink on hand. I don't think the commentators should concentrate on that...
That is all. :)

Is plate-sharing even allowed at Red Lobster? Most restaurants either expressly forbid it (sometimes even with a sign or a line in the menu that says so) or strongly frown upon it. If you announced your intentions to share a plate, that could be why you got less-than-stellar service the rest of the night.

The only point I want to make is that you do NOT deserve a full refund.
The food itself never seemed to be an issue so you obviously enjoyed what you could (hee, hee) choke down (yeesh).

On one hand, you seem to have a right to disappointed with the service. However, there are better ways to handle it.
First, talk to the manager if at all possible. It's best to handle things at the local level. Many managers will be apologetic and will try to fix the problem if they can.
Next, there is so much anger in this letter. It's fine to be mad, but when you write a letter to a company it's best to do so in a quasi-professional manner. People will listen and respond better if you approach them in a calm manner.

I agree that the best time to handle this issue would have been at the restaurant. I would have also suggested writing the letter a little more professionally.
I agree that it sounds like you did receive poor service, however, and they should welcome your feedback.

It appears they cooked the to-go meal fresh as you were getting ready to leave, or maybe they forgot about it.
You shouldn't have had to get your own drink. That happens here at our PizzaHut, for some reason they plop the food down and you don't see them again. We know this when we go so we are used to going to the counter to ask. Although there is the occasional waitress that is on top of things. But I would think Red Lobster wouldn't.
The one thing about this letter though, is that it is written in anger which takes some validity away from your complaint. You may want to write it again with less exclamation points.

Im sorry but I think you have larger issues if you can't eat without water without choking.
Oh wait, I get it. That was for dramatic effect. Along with all of the !!! marks.
God, but I do love me some drama in the morning.
Very clever. And effective.
Not.

I can't help but wonder about your eating habits, if you will start choking unless a drink is at hand.

"I have never done this before so I am hoping this is right."
It isn't. You should have spoken with a manager when you became unhappy with repeatedly bad service.

The other comments are dead on; the time to handle this is while you're there in the business, not days later.
However, if you are going to write a complaint letter, make sure you compose it as a business-like letter, and check your spelling and punctuation. The business will be much more likely to respond and take your complaint seriously.

The time to discuss service issues is while you are still at the restaurant - - not 6 days later via a poorly written e-mail.
In the eyes of Red Lobster you ordered food, ate it and paid the bill so the transaction is complete.

I'm not sure if you have ever had issues before with red lobster but here are my two cents from a darden employee. for the most part, if you speak to the manager right then and there, they will comp your meal and ensure you are happy before you leave. red lobster takes a lot of pride in their training and guest relations, so if you had spoken to the manager, you may have gotten your server some extra training, or perhaps a warning if he/she went to far.
