Sewing Machine from Target.com Never Worked

I created my wedding through Target.com because of the great variety and selection you had to offer and reasonable prices, and alleged good reputation. I have purchased dozens of items myself, and generally been satisfied. I am very disappointed in the service I recently received regarding one of my registry gifts. My best friend purchased a sewing machine for us, Order #601-7529696-6874559. The registry was listed under *****. I was super excited to receive this item, but did not have an immediate need to use it. When I did go to use it several months later, I took the machine out of the box, and attempted to hem a pair of curtains... very standard usually considering I am not a beginner. The first problems arose when I tried to thread the machine. I followed all instruction, to a tee, but could not get it to work. I became frustrated and gave up for the time being. I came back to it a few weeks later, and still no luck. this cycle continued for a few months, and was extremely frustrating. finally, one day, I got the machine to thread, but whenever I tried to sew anything, it would all get horrible bunched up. I did all the troubleshooting available, including calling Singer, and using their website to help me. No luck. I finally took the machine to a local authorized dealer, who, to my surprise, alarmed me that the bobbin inside the machine had gotten misaligned and broke during shipping, and would cost me over $100 to repair!! I was upset, but thought, "no problem, Target will stand behind this purchase". When I went to the local store, I was told they can not help me because it was purchased on line, and they completely dismissed me ( very rude, and condescending I might add). When I tried to use your website, I keep going through loops telling me my item is no longer eligible for return. ALL I want is a working sewing machine, to replace the one i have NEVER been able to use!!

Send me a shipping label to return the defective machine, or a receipt that will allow me to return it at the store level. I would like a gift card credit to buy another machine, I don't even care if it's the same one, but do not want to take the risk that it will be broken during shipping again! The sale price that my friend paid for the machine is $199.99 plus tax of approx. $16.75, and I can provide the original receipt she was sent if necessary. Contact me anytime to resolve this.

Another case of Target's customer "NO" service. This is why their
stock is at a 5 year low and Wal Mart stock is doing well. Tell your
friends to register at Wal Mart instead. How about Costco. They are
fantastic.

Everyone is saying its been too long for a return to be considered..
but I don't see any dates at when the machine was purchased. Why do
people say that a store will stand behind its product? I understand if
it is a store brand, but many stores sell the name brand products. The
COMPANY itself should stand behind it. OH nevermind about the time
issue.. I just spotted the words "a few months"!

The bottom line is that Target has a widely publicized, strict 90 days
return policy. You waited too long to make sure the machine worked
properly and Target is perfectly within their right to refuse an
exchange.

Go to Target and buy a new one, then use the receipt to return the old
one for a refund...Problem Solved!

I have to agree that too much time passed. I know things can get
damaged in transit, even when delivered to a store, but the seller's
responsibility lapsed, they were available had this been done sooner,
At this point, I'd try contacting the manufacturer, not the retailer,
in an attempt to get it resolved.

I think you simply waited too long for Target to have any
responsibility in this matter.

A bobbin "inside the machine" got "misaligned and damaged" in
shipping? While I can see if you returned this in a timely manner,
Target may have been your first choice, why not contact SINGER about
the fact their product was damaged while in SINGER'S packaging?

Again, I do not believe Target bears any responsibility at this point.
However, I think Singer deserves 24-7 attention to get them to make
this right. I had trouble several years ago convincing a manufacturer
that their pacakaging was insufficient for a product to be safely
delivered. Good luck!

By your own admission, you waited several months before you even
opened the machine. It did not work correctly, so you waited a few
more weeks/months to try again. Target IS NOT responsible for this
machine. Your best recourse is to contact the singer sewing machine
company.

Here is a link to their website and the warranty terms:

I think you're out of luck, but you might try Singer. I've had great
luck in the past getting my machines fixed, including one that was
several years old.

When I worked at the fabric store, I would often tell people to walk
away from their machine/project when they got frustrated, but I meant
for an hour, not several weeks. Part of the responsibility in this is
yours. It won't magically fix itself if left alone, yknow.

Did you read the instruction manual to see if there is a warranty on
the unit? If so, it's not hard to contact the manufacturer to see if
they will cover the warranty work. I don't get why you are blaming
Target, as they did not make the product. I work for a manufacturer,
and generally after the retailer's return period (30-90 days in most
cases) all you need to do it contact the manufacturer regarding
service or replacement.

First of all, whether you had an immediate need for the machine or
not, it should have been taken out of the box and tested for this
exact reason. Second, after trying it out for the first time and
finding that it didn't work properly, you should have immediately
contacted Target and/or the manufacturer depending upon the age of the
unit. I'm guessing that there is no way for sure to know that the
bobbin was misaligned during shipping rather than prior to shipping.
Why not call the manufacturer and try to work something out with them?
With the amount of time that's passed though, I honestly don't feel
you deserve a replacement or repair on this item. If the machine is
worth it I would consider getting a second estimate and having the
machine repaired.

I think you're out of luck, given the amount of time that passed
before using it for the first time and for the "few months" you tried
to get it to work properly. I would think that as an experienced
sewer, the inability to get a sewing machine to cooperate would
warrant attempting to return it immediately.
