GPS Feature Disabled by Verizon

Posted Sat October 6, 2007 12:00 pm, by david w. written to Verizon Wireless (Cell Phones)

Verizon has disabled the GPS feature that RIM has made available on all of their 8830 Blackberries. Verizon has disabled this feature in order to force customers to purchase its own locator services for an additional monthly fee. The crippling of this feature is unnecessary and unfair to Verizon customers. Competitor wireless companies such as Sprint and ATT have allowed full functionality of the GPS feature in their 8830 phones without charging additional fees. The GPS information is delivered to phones using technology that is not controlled by Verizon and available to anyone-free of charge-who has a receiver capable of receiving signals. I object to Verizon's decision to remove features from a phone that I would find useful. A feature that does not interfere with Verizon's ability to deliver its core services. This practice is unfriendly and unfair to Verizon customers who pay premium fees for sub-par services. Why should we be forced to pay more for a feature that was intended to be free by the original manufacturer?

I would like to add that the advertising from Verizon about the GPS feature is confusing at best. It is unclear that in order to use the GPS functionality, additional fees have to be paid. While I have the option of returning the unit, the time and trouble I have gone to through to resolve this issue - combined with the cost of breaking my contract and still being without a phone that delivers the functionality I desire, leaves me no choice but to turn to you for help. Thank you for your attention.

Please send a service book to enable the GPS feature for all customers who bought the 8830.

Verizon's Marketing department is responsible for this decision. It
is not only your phone with this issue. I have a Motorola Q9C in
which on the Sprint network is fully functional, but is disabled on
the Verizon network.

When entering the program menu and selecting "H" (GPS Settings) a
screen is displayed that says, "ALERT: Modifying GPS Settings
disabled." with nothing but an OK button.

I have, and suggest everyone do the same, written two letters to their
corporate offices. One to New York, and the other to Illinois. These
letters express my distaste for this kind of business practice. I
also went to http://aboutus.vzw.com/leadership/executive/index.html
and copied the letter I mailed into an email to many of the
executives. I hope everyone does the same because it is the only way
they will change their business practices.

I got a call from the Assistant to the President who thanked me for my
input, and gave me 1000 free bonus minutes to use if I every go over.
They are good for my entire two year contract.

In the mean time, does anyone know if the alert screen in the
programming menu is issued by the Windows registry, in a dll, or
somewhere else? I have been unable to find a registry key for it, but
have found keys that control other message screens on my phone.

Any help would be appreciated. I do not expect Verizon to change
their business overnight. I do, however want my GPS working by
tomorrow. :)

You say that you have the option of returning the unit. If that's
true, are you able to return it and still maintain the contract? You
don't necessarily have to purchase the unit through Verizon, you can
purchase it from an independent source. That's usually more expensive
than purchasing it through your service provider, but it may be worth
it if you want all of the features the phone has to offer.

Verizon has a history of crippling connectivity on devices (such as
Bluetooth and aGPS application access) to force you to use their
GetItNow value added services instead of using free or open source
applications. Do what I do, fire them and move to a GSM carrier such
as T-Mobile or at&t, buy unlocked phones and get free of their
crippling of devices and nickel and dime attitude. At least with GSM
you are free to use any unlocked device, just insert your SIM card. It
may take a little work to get advanced features like SMS/data working
but you have an uncrippled device you are free to what you wish with.
Can't do that with any of the control freak CDMA operators, as you can
only use their branded crippled hardware on their networks.

I have an 8830 on Sprint... by Jeffrey Sat October 6, 2007 @ 7:54 PM

Go out and buy a Verizon cell phone and you will see that there is a
fee for just about anything. How come people that use ATT or Sprint
with the same phones have no problems using the build in gps with
their favorite gps software? You are clearly working for Verizon. This
is a Smartphone/PDA running windows mobile 6.1. People that have this
phone have the option to buy and install programs. If I have my own
GPS software I should be allow to use it. We are paying for Verizon
phone usage not the pda part. They have no rights to block the PDA
part of the device. You need to do the research yourself. Go to
Motorola website and they clearly stated that they have no control
over the GPS because VERIZON blocked it... This is the reason why I
returned my LG dare. Verizon wanted an additional fee so I could sync
my phone and transfer my schedule from Outlook. Like Dr. Phill would
say... Are you kidding me? TTransfering files (Like Outlook) is done
via your USB port and not over the air.. What gives them the right to
do that.. It's amazing, isn't it? They busted Bill gates A$$ because
they say that he had too much control over the business market..
Verizon is worst than Microsoft, not that I think that Microsoft is a
bad company.. Microsoft is actually a great company. Verizon gives
nothing for free.. Go to their website and you will see that
everything comes with a fee.. They can't even transfer your contacts
to your new phone without a fee.... Give me a break... As soon as my
contract is up Sprint,, here I come..
PS.. By the way someone should get a legal team and go after them,,,
the so called network doesn't come near my home like in the
commercial.. Lots of dead spots in my area... Do you know what that's
called,, FALSE ADVERTISEMENT..
