Dirty, Moldy Rooms at Disney World

Posted Mon October 8, 2007 12:00 pm, by Bud S. written to DisneyWorld (Orlando, FL)

Write a Letter to this Company

On Tuesday Oct. 7, 2007, we checked into the Caribbean Beach Resort for a four night stay. Upon entering the room, we observed the following conditions:

The carpet was heavily soiled with numerous stains, the bed covering was also stained, there was a substance that had been spat on the frame of the mirror, their was a hairball behind the bathroom door, and there was mold growing on the toilet paper holder and a corner of the bathroom floor.

We immediately went back to the check in desk and asked for a different room based upon our observations. We were told that there were no other rooms available, but that they would do a "VIP" cleaning of our room. Their excuse for the dirty room was that "the property is 35 years old and is in need of refurbishing". The only cleaning done was to remove the hairball, and change the soiled bed covering. If this had not been a prepaid package deal, we would have checked out an hour after arriving.

We did have 14 large towels in the room, so I made a towel walkway from the bathroom to our beds each day so we would not have to walk on the heavily soiled carpet. The shower nozzle is plugged so that only half the water jets spray water, and the shower drain is slow to drain, so that you would be standing in 4 to 6" of water while taking a shower.

I would like the CEO of Disney World to stay in this room, or better yet, have his grandchildren stay a week in this room.

Well I just went on a family trip to Disney and stayed in the same
resort and he room had an awful odor and the water would turn orange
in the bath room and the beds had spiders and other bugs in hem and
the maid never came to our room while we were there for a week!!! We
tried to get a refund or a better room but they said that there are
none left so I wrote to the CEO and went to the "All Stars resort" but
did not get a refund or an answer to our letter all we got was a
couple of stickers! Waah! But the All Stars resort was very nice and
comfortable! Next time that you go I recomend the All Stars resort.

I've stayed at way worse hotels than you describe not on purpose but
because nothing else was available. If you are really negative and
rude to the staff when you go and complain you really are going to get
what you want.

I would have gone back to the check in area asked to speak to a
manager and asked nice if the manager would come and look at my room.
I am certain that if the saw the stains on the carpet and other
concerns of yours they would have either changed your room or had it
recleaned while he/she supervised.

To the poster that mentioned Shades of Green your correct SOG is a top
notch destination for Military personnel and their families. I have
stayed there many times and had nothing but great experiences. SOG is
actually older than Caribbean Beach Resort it was another Disney
resort before the Military bought it. SOG is also exclusive you have
to be eligible to stay there and what you pay is based on your rank
and what type of room chosen. This also limits the type of people the
resort is going to get obviously you don't have to worry about teens
trashing the room because if they did they'd never be able to stay at
another Military Hotel or would face disiplinary action.

To OP glad you heard back from Disney.

I was contacted by Disneyworld guest relations last week. They
apologized for the dirty moldy room, saying that that the property we
stayed in was one of the oldest properties at Disneyworld. They did
give me two options to choose from:
Option #1: I could stay for two nights free at any resort at
Disneyworld, or
Option #2: They would give me a 100% refund.
I opted for option number 2.

Disney stopped being a family destinationa a long time ago; they are
now a business that is only interested in pulling in as much money as
possible, even if it means cutting out the "experiences" most of us
remember from our youth.

Examples:

Mr Toad's Wild Ride is now gone!!

Homos flock there like seagulls on a loaf of bread.

Tickets cost an absolute fortune!

We went there a year ago and it isn't what it used to be; no longer
"Magical" in my opinion. On a bright not, I stayed at The Shades of
Green (military resort right across the street from Magic Kingdom).
SoG is a world-class operation; maybe you should join the military so
you can stay there. $99 a night for me.

Yuck! This definitely sounds like a bad experience and I hope they
contact you. It's also nice to see how reasonable you are, not asking
for discounts or anything.

I love your final paragraph!

Sorry to read about your experience.

I hope you get a positive response from Disney, for what you spent
your kids deserve a better memory of Disney World than this.

Best of Luck!

Looks like this hotel room got hit-or-miss results on tripadvisor so
your problem is not unheard of.

I think what you described is disgusting and I don't see how
housekeeping thought it was okay to put a stained bedspread on the bed
and call it good.

If you checked in October 7 and today is the 9th, are you still there?
If so, have they done anything else for you?

That sounds totally gross, although I don't think you're going to get
the CEO or his grandchildren to stay in this room. I hope you do get a
response though, because no one should have to live in a room like
that.

I find this highly unlikely. My family and I have stayed at this
specific resort three times. All of the rooms were always very nice.

credit, as we do not plan on returning to Disney World ever.

It sounds revolting there. I think they came up with a lame excuse for
you too. I hope they respond to your letter and take this seriously.

The last time we went to Disney, we stayed at the Caribbean resort and
it was Gross with a capital G. The problem was mostly with the
grounds; there were rabbits running around everywhere, we saw two
rats, and one night there were ducks swimming around in the pool. The
rooms also had a very... organic odour at times.

I think your demand for compensation is the best one I've ever seen on
this site. ;)

Bud S.,
I note that you are not asking for any future comps or the like. That
is commendable.
Though I was not there I have been on the otherside of your issue.
When a hotel guest runs into a problem that they feel is not being
addressed they should request to speak with the General or Hotel
Manager.
In doing so upper management is put on notice that a problem exists
and are placed in a position to meet your expectations.
If their actions fall short you could then ramp it up to demand a
discount, future comp or alternate accomodations.
I'm confident the CEO will work your letter back down to the hotel
level which could have occured days ago had you or the desk people you
spoke with ramped the problem up as I suggested.
That being said I hope Disney comes through and do stop back and let
us knows what comes of your letter.
BillR.
