Treated with Disregard by Ameristar Casinos
Posted Sun October 14, 2007 12:00 pm, by Roxanne L. written to Ameristar Casinos, Inc.
Write a Letter to this Company
On Sept 29, my husband and I were in Black Hawk. We'd parked at Ameristar and had played all afternoon. Our intention was to play all day, end at Ameristart, and have supper there before heading down off of the mountain. I don't like driving down in the dark. We had JUST sat down for dinner when one of the wait staff came through the dining room with his hands cupped to his mouth. He had a smirk on his face and was shouting, "evacuate the building! Everybody out of here!" His demeanor was not alarming, and everyone just ignored him. Shortly afterwards, all of the slots were shut down and it was announced on the P.A. system that everyone did, indeed, have to evacuate the building.
We waited nearly an hour outside, and finally ended up across the street in another casino. It was about 5:15 when this had happened. It was 10:30 before we were let back in to get our vehicle and leave. Since we had arrived in Black Hawk around 11:30 that morning, it made for a VERY long day. We ended up paying and eating a different meal at a very late hour. We were not very happy. There had been some type of a natural gas leak that pre-empted this series of events.
I understand that Ameristar may or may not have been able to prevent it from happening, but this took over FIVE hours out of our day! There were two exhausted employees at the front door writing out comps for one buffet dinner. As far as I'm concerned, that was simply a refund for the meal that we didn't get to eat!
My expectation would have been an immediate apology for this horrible inconvenience, and not only a refund for the meal we didn't get to eat, but some type of compensation for all of those hours! I was about ready to get a room for the night!
Doesn't Ameristar value their patrons and hope they would come back after this type of experience? It appears not. I doubt that we will be making Ameristar a regular stop after this experience.
I would like an explanation of what really happened that day, as well as an apology. I would like a refund for our meal that we never got to eat, and an explanation of why patrons were treated with such disregard on that day.

Would you have rather they left you inside with a gas leak & risk getting blown up????
They comped you for the meal, what else do you expect????
Grow up & get over yourself.

And you want...what?
They had an emergency situation, you had to leave, it sucks that your car was stuck there. You don't need gift certificates or other goodies entitlement slug, you need to chalk it up to a crummy day and stop looking for freebies.
Tacky.

I love when employees tell customers that they have to leave the place because of a potential danger, they just stand/sit there and look stupid. This happened at my store. Our electrical box started sparking up in the back and 2 fellow employees came running up saying we had to leave the store. The rude guy I was "ringing up" (our power had gone out a few min. before) said "well your almost finished so just keep going" i was like "he said leave.. i'm leaving!" and left. I hate idiot customers

She wants to be paid for the casino saving her life.
For all our sakes, I hope she does not breed.

then the events never happen. According to your sentence, if there was a gas leak, then none of the events would have happened. But the events did happen, so there was no gas leak. You have a valid complaint! This logic makes as much sense as your letter.

Come on - - you don't really care what happened that day and an apology would also not quiet you down. Be honest - - you're looking for monetary compensation over and above the cost of the meal that was interrupted - - right?

Dear Ameristar,
We recently spent the day at your Black Hawk casino. While eating our dinner, we were alerted that the building had to be evacuated. We later found out that the evacuation was due to a gas leak. While we were disappointed that we missed out on our dinner, we were glad that action was taken that possibly saved our lives. Thankfully, we are now able to continue living on Earth. In addition, we now have a complimentary buffet meal to be used at another point in our lives, which we are conveniently able to continue living thanks to your decision to evacuate. Thanks!
Sincerely,
A grateful (and still living) customer

Get over yourself. Yes it was inconvenient and a hassle. Ameristar has NOTHING to say in the matter of when officials will clear the building as safe for re-entry, the gas company and utility officials decide when things are safe. In your case it took 5 hours.
If you had been let into the building too early and were injured because of that, you would be the first one in line to whine and sue for your injuries.
Ameristar did nothing wrong and a complaint letter will only serve to make you look ignorant of the way the world actually works.

Boy, you really like playing the odds! Gas leak v. loose slots. Maybe the employee's smirk was really mix of fear and an attempt to look professional and calm in the face of an emergency.

Actually, it sounded like you disregarded the employee and not the other way around.
Things like this happen, and it sounds like they tried to make it right by not only getting you out of the building (for your own safety), but also offering comps for the buffet dinner.
One point here - you ask for a refund for the meal you never got to eat in the end. However, you stated earlier in your letter..."There were two exhausted employees at the front door writing out comps for one buffet dinner. As far as I'm concerned, that was simply a refund for the meal that we didn't get to eat!" So, even you seemingly acknowledged that you were indeed refunded.

I don't know about you, but when someone working in the building tells me to evacuate, I evacuate.

I worked in a movie theatre and we had a fire in the upstairs portion where the projectors are. We had to stop all the movies where they were and evacuate the patrons. We weren't sure how long it was going to take, after all we were at the mercy of the fire department.
We wrote out comps, and most people left. It was their choice to leave. It took 6 hours before people where allowed in.
There wasn't anything that we could do other then give out comps. None of the patrons stayed for that length. It was unfortunate but we made good.
As for Ameristar, I think they made good. They gave you credit for a dinner that you didnt eat. Yes you had to pay to eat elsewhere but since you got comped from the casino for dinner, I dont think that you deserve or will get anything else. Also because some cities have privacy laws, you may not be able to find out what happened at all.

Instead of thanking them, you're begging for free grub, after using their parking lot all day to spend money in other casinos. Very thoughtful of you to add that to the letter.
Who should apologize to whom?

I can tell from the tone of your letter that you've never had to deal with evacuating from a natural gas leak. Gas leaks are not a joke, and you are really making it out to see as if Ameristar purposely did this to inconveinience you.
I also doubt that the person yelling for you to evacuate the building was smirking. It's possible that he was trying to keep calm amid what may have been a disaster if someone had not decided to comply to the request to evacuate the building.
I find your lack of understanding disturbing most of all. Did you pay for anything? Did you put down money for your meal then not get it? You don't even mention ordering your food. Quoting you: "We had JUST sat down for dinner" - therefore implying that you were preparing to puruse the menu.
Perhaps you'll get something, maybe you won't, but I think the next time you're faced with a crisis such as this, you will consider what you need to do: get out and wait until it is safe to return. A gas leak is no laughing matter.

This has to be one of the stupidest letters I've ever read on here.
Would you rather have stayed and have God knows what happen to you?
Stupid. Just plain stupid.

You said yourself that it was the patrons who treated the gentleman who warned you to leave with disregard. If you had paid attention to him, you could have gone directly to get a refund before leaving (it sounds like you prepaid for this meal).
I suppose you would prefer being blown up in lieu of being inconvenienced. Let me tell you, gas explosion risk is nothing to fool with. Extremely dangerous.
Did you take a voucher? It sounds like you are a regular customer. You can use the voucher next time. I really don't think they treated you with disregard; this is an unusual event, and they did look out for your safety and offer a voucher.

I'm sure that Ameristar regrets that ensuring their guests and an entire mountain valley's safety and possibly preventing your death inconvenienced you in any way. It must have been horrible to walk a few feet to another of the numerous casinos to dine and gamble.
For those that don't know, Black Hawk, Colorado, is an old mining town in the mountains of Colorado, that was "revitalized" when gambling was allowed. It is in a narrow valley, surrounded by pine forests, and built to the hilt with casinos. In addition, the few ways out of the area are winding mountain roads and usually congested. ANY fire/explosion possibility needs to be taken extremely seriously, which it sounds like is what this casino did. My hat's off to them.

Apology for what? Possibly saving your life?
Only smart thing you said was getting a refund for the meal you didn't finish.

Personally, I think they should have let you back in, with the gas leak, to get your car. Of course, they should have made you sign a waiver for when you blew yourself up that you couldn't sue. Better to be inconvenienced than dead isn't it?
