Charmin Basic is Awful!

Posted Sun November 4, 2007 12:00 pm, by Maranda B. written to Charmin

Write a Letter to this Company

On November 3, I ran into a local store to grab a couple of items. One of the items happened to be toilet paper.

Upon reaching the paper goods aisle, I noticed a package of Charmin priced very similar to the Angel Soft brand I typically buy. The name on the package was Charmin Basic. The tag line: Softness, Strength, & Value Rolled into One. Normally, I would be a bit hesitant to try a toilet paper with Basic in the name. However, since this one bore the Charmin name I figured it would be quality.

Opening the package up, the first thing I noticed was how rough the paper was. Certainly not soft as promised! Then, tearing off a piece, I realized you could actually see through the paper. How can there be any strength? Needless to say, my husband and I agree that this stuff is barely a step above a scratchy one-ply paper. I'm extremely disappointed!

After trying this product and seeing that it definitely doesn't live up to the Charmin brand, I would hope Charmin would think twice about continuing to manufacture such junk. Why would you want to stake your reputation on a toilet paper that obviously isn't up to the standards of other Charmin products?

I recently purchased a 12 roll = 24 pack of Charmin Basic, I agree
with all of you that thought it was the worst of toilet tissue. I just
can't stand the fact that I have to use all of the tissue before
purchasing my regular brand. Charmin Basic is the scratchiest,
thinnest, ruffest and weakest tissue that I have ever used . I find
that I have to use extra sheets than normal.Charmin Basic is not cheap
by any means. This is one product that needs to come off the shelves
or needs to be modified to suit the brand name that it is defacing!
Angel Soft is the best when you need to do the do.

I just joined today, but I had a few questions for you. Based on your
comments, I would assume that you did not buy Charmin basic again, but
that you used to buy angel soft. Did you go back to Angel Soft or try
something else?

One of my friends tried the Charmin Ultra Strong (in the red package)
and said it was like wiping with cardboard. Have you tried that
product? I'm partial to Quilted Northern Ultra myself.

The bears on the commercials with the car wash brushes kind of puts it
all in perspective. I like how Toilet Paper has now become
"specialized" for different "feels", I guess it's the same marketing
trend Starbucks started. Create a need then convince consumers their
butts will thank them for it.

I always go for the scratchy 2 ply myself...i need to be clean, and
the fluffy stuff just moves it around and leaves my ass covered in
fuzz

I think this is a great letter. The last sentence ("Why would you
want to stake your reputation on a toilet paper that obviously isn't
up to the standards of other Charmin products?") says it all.

I buy Target's version of Quilted Northern and love it.

I'm with you Maranda. This is maybe the worst toilet paper in the
free world. My old roomie and I bought some once in an effort to save
some money (you know, so we could save up for important purchases like
beer LOL). I guess we thought that we were safe, since it was Charmin
after all. Boy were we surprised!

You know, I never consciously thought about it, but I started buying
Cottonelle after that whole fiasco, and I haven't bought Charmin
since. So I guess it did cost them a customer, even though I didn't
plan it that way.

Good letter, by the way. I always like to read letters that are calm
and sane! :)

How about you get a life. You should think about using your life and
energy worrying about more important things. Try being grateful that
you even had toilet paper to use. While you're complaining that yours
isn't soft enough or strong enough, there are people who don't have
the luxury of being able to use toilet paper. Try that on for size.
See if that reality is soft enough.

Haven't tried this one but not impressed with Charmin anyway. We use
Cottonelle and nothing but. No pun intended. I have noticed the
rolls have been reduced in size even though the package says big
rolls. Subjective to interpretation.

I don't even like regular charmin. The double roll is dwarfed in some
way (it is too small for my dispenser when all other brands fit just
right) and it is two ply. I can get a properly fitting three ply
double roll for less. I usually Cottonelle or Royale.
We don't have Angel Soft (or at least I have never seen it) so I don't
know what it is like.

I have found that any product containing the name basic, is exactly
that, basic; no frills, just basic. Have you tried Scott 1000? I love
the Scott 1000 rolls because they last forever, and offer the softness
and durability of comparably priced TP's
Happy Wiping! *chuckle*

I just need my toilet paper to GET IN, GET THE JOB DONE and GET OUT
without my fingers poking through the stuff and making contact with
the undesirable contents.

I have never been one for flowers, perfume, aloe, or any of the other
stuff they put on the paper.

I do use Basic Paper Towels without any major issues, but TP is where
I draw the line.

On a side note, what ever happened to the man that lived in the tank
of a toilet and floated around in a little boat? I thnk they called
him the tidy-bowl man?

I reccommend Angel Soft, it passes the finger test quite well.

Good letter. I never buy Charmin because with kids and a husband in
the house, we go through TP like it was water. Ha. It's just not worth
it price wise for us, and now I know that Charmin Basic isn't worth
it, either!

Guess I'll stick with Angel Soft.

OMG NOT THAT!!

lol.

My dad used to buy that stuff for the kids bathroom when I was
growling up, saying we needed to "sand blast" our (you know the word)
to keep it clean.

:) God Bless that man. He made me realize that adults really do have
it made over being a kid. We get the good steaks, and the fluffy bum
wipes.

ahhh.

This is a new lower end product. If you buy Charmin on a regular
basis, it a mid to high end toilet paper without the frills. Frills
being lotion, scents etc etc.

This product does sell well in lower income areas. It is sold
everywhere. It has been on the shelves for about 2 years I would say.
It is not marketed at all, but people do have coupons for them.

I sell it quite well in my store, being in a college town.

You have a valid complaint, but you were trying to save a buck.
Knowing that BASIC meant cheaper, you expected it to be the same as
regular charmin?

I agree! The Charmin Basic brand of paper towels are great for the
price, but the toilet paper is beyond awful.

Good letter.
