Icy Hot Gel is Not So Hot
Posted Wed November 14, 2007 12:00 pm, by lucy e. written to Icy Hot
Write a Letter to this Company
I have used Icy Hot for many years for various aches and pains. The one thing I didn't really care for though, was the lingering odor that it left on my hands after rubbing it into the affected joint, not to mention the stinging it caused when I would inevitably rub my eye some time later.
When I saw your "no mess, vanishing scent" gel formula tube with the sponge applicator, I thought cool - an answer to both problems all in one package. Sadly, I am very unimpressed with the results. Yes, it is easy and mess-free, and has no odor to speak of. The problem is, it is also results free! No icy, no hot, no pain relief.
I will have to go back to the old way, I suppose, and maybe, just maybe, I will learn to keep my hands away from my face.....
Thank you for your time,
Lucy

I just realized something... YOUR name is Lucy! hahaha
I thought you were calling me Lucy because she's my idol. I'm such a dumbbell.. just like Lucy. Well, not you, the other Lucy. Ugh..you know what I mean.
Incidentally, Lucy was no dumbbell.
Great letter.

Its always strange to me to hear that people dont like the smell of Icy Hot. I LOVE the smell! It smells like mint to me. I also love the product until it starts burning.
But I never had any issue with it getting into my eyes or anywhere else. I am pretty good at washing my hands. But I do like the stick one. It works well and you dont have to come in contact with it and your hands at all.
If this isnt possible then get some cheap plastic gloves and use those.

I'm with you, I've lost count of how many times I've rubbed my eyes or some equally sensitive area (DON'T ASK!!) shortly after using IcyHot or BenGay or something similar. You would think I would learn my lesson, but alas....no.
Actually, I think the smell is some sort of holistic cure, because if I use a no scent/low scent product - aspercreme, for instance or odorless bengay - I will not notice any significant change. On the other hand, if I use the smelly stuff - a friend describes it as 'that familiar locker room smell' - I notice an almost immediate feeling of relief.
For an odd, but effective cure for arthritic joints, try spraying the area with WD-40. No joke, it works on creaky locks and creaky knees. :)

Have you tried the stick that looks like deodorant? I find that works pretty good. It does stink, though. But at least I don't get it on my hands.

At the risk of antagonizing the masses here...
My letter seems to be confusing to some. There are two parts to it. The first speaks to my past experience with the regular, rub in formula. Even though I am aware of the fact that the smell and icy-hotness will remain on my hands after application, I don't like it. This is not the basis for my compliant, just a little framework.
The second part of my letter deals with the fact that the solution to this problem - tha Icy hot gel no odor, HANDS FREE gel - is not effective in relieving my achy joints. I am just suggesting that they review the efficacy of this particular formula, which is different than the original cream.
Also, I think I have already determined that this paticular formula is not what I need, and as I stated in my letter (you did read it, right?), I will go back to the cream and try to keep my smelly hands away from my face.

No antagonizing here. Yes, I read the letter, at least everything after the first sentence (: I based that comment about using a different formula on my ASSumption I had read the first part correctly. But I hadn't.
You wrote a nice reply considering the oversight.

I wonder why they would use differnt gels for the same product. Perhaps its only activated by the friction of rubbing the gel between your hands before appling to the effected area.
I hate when i use that anti-bacteria gel stuff and then I forget then rub my eye or something. Bleh!

Try washing your hands before you start rubbing your eyes. I hear they recently came up with this new thing called soap, apparently it does wonders!

I'm wondering if you washed your hands afterwards and it was still on them?
Sorry it didn't work for you but good thing it wasn't stronger for when you touched your eye. That must have been terrible.
Let us know if they write you back. Good luck.
