Borders Lies to Customers

Posted Mon January 7, 2008 12:00 pm, by Gloria B. written to Borders

Write a Letter to this Company

I have been an avid customer of Borders (going quite often to the Borders Store in Richmond, VA on Broad Street). I had a Borders Rewards Card. I noticed when I was in the store previously that some of the music posters were quite nice. I was told by a store employee they could put my name and number on the back and call me when they were done with the poster and I could have it. Well the first poster came and went with no phone call -- I just noticed it was gone in the store when I was there. I was told by a store employee they tried to contact me and could not (which I knew was not true because I have voice mail and an answering machine).

At any rate a couple months later -- and I'm still an avid customer going in the store and purchasing goods -- I noticed a Gary Allan poster. I am a fan of Gary Allan. I asked the store employee and they said I could have it -- no one had asked for it. He put my name and number on the back.

I had been in the store a number of times and my name and number remained on the back of the poster. Saturday, January 5th, I noticed the poster was gone. I asked the store employee and he took my name and number to have the manager in charge of the posters call me. She never called so I called her. I was told she was with a customer. She never called me back but another employee called me. He stated they tried to reach me and went on down the list to give the poster away. I told him I have an answering machine and voice mail and I know that was an outright lie. My cell phone tells me if people call me and don't reach me -- no messages whatsoever. I went back up to the store and returned what I purchased earlier in the day. The poster manager ran up to me while I was returning my stuff and told me a store employee had taken the poster and she would bring it back in for me. I told her to forget it. I told the employee to tear up my Borders Rewards Card.

I placed a call to customer care to advise them of this as well. I don't think anyone really seems to care that you have a dissatisfied customer.

You have a store that basically is lying to customers and letting their employees have the posters (which is fine if this is your policy but don't tell the customers they can have them -- and then don't contact them).

If you would like to contact me or forward my message to the appropriate personnel, I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Gloria Bradley

I want to be reimbursed $25.00 for a gift card I purchased at Christmas time because I do not wish to give Borders my business. Also, inform your employees of policies to be upheld in the store with regards to your loyal customers. You have lost one.

I used to work in movie theatre and it was common practice for us
employees to take left over posters home. We of course had to ask
first (some posters had to go back to the distributor for use during
the video release). People would often ask and we told them that we
would take their name. If no employee had claimed the poster 90 days
after it came down, then and only then would it go to the customer. It
rarely happened though. In the 4+ years I was there, I only saw it
happen twice.
You should be greatful that they even offered to take your
information.
Unless you leave your cell phone 24/7/365, it is possible that they
did call and just didn't leave a message.

What an idiot. Maybe you should complain to your cell phone carrier.
How dare you call someone a liar. You have no merit with this one.
By the way, no refunds on gift cards!!!

I can see you being irritated that this happened. I can even see you
deciding not to patronize this particular Borders. I'd probably be
right there with you that far. Heck, I can even see this
incident leaving a bit of a bad taste in your mouth, souring you on
Borders in general. What I cannot see is you telling the manager to
tear up your Borders card in some kind of gesture of pique, and then
writing an angry letter asking for reimbursement on a totally
unrelated purchase.

Free posters just don't strike me as important enough to justify all
this. That's just my two cents though.

WOW! I'd hate to see what you do when something TRULY devastating
happens to you! Get a life!

I think you acted irationally when the manager offered you the poster.
She knew the employee took it, knew you were angry and got it for you.
And while this whole incident should have never happened, I find it a
bit troubling that you would not accept the poster after all. I mean
you wanted it badly enough to complain about it.

And also did you purchase a $25 gift card for yourself or someone
else...I am puzzled on that comment.

If you don't want to return then fine...but since you are an avid
reader and enjoyed the store up until these incidents I am sure you
can work out something with Borders.

I agree with the other posters...you paid nothing and received
nothing. What's the problem?

If you really don't want the gift card, give it to someone else, but
your demand for reimbursement just seems petty.

Your credibility went out the window with that statement.

"I want to be reimbursed $25.00 for a gift card I purchased at
Christmas time because I do not wish to give Borders my business."

Your credibility left the country with that statement.

'Nuff said.

You purchased a $25 gift card for yourself?

All f this over just one poster? Come on! It's not the end of the
world, you know it.

wouldn't be complaining.

After the first time, I would thought, "Oh, weird, okay." After the
second time, I would have thought, "Okay, I give up."

All this over free posters? Really? To each her own.

Let me get this straight... you're upset that they didn't contact you
over a free poster? Yeah, it would've been nice if they could've given
it to you but they didn't and they aren't obligated to do so.

Lord have mercy, this reminds me of the customers at my chain who went
buckwild that we don't give out free calendars anymore. Never in my
life did I see so many irate people lose their marbles and get upset
over something that was FREE.

One Borders has problems giving away posters and the OP is writing off
the entire chain. That is her perogative, I suppose. However, asking
for a refund for the $25 gift card she purchased is petty.

I'm sure they will be implementing a new policy of not giving anything
free to any customers now Gloria. They can call it the "Gloria rule."

I would love to come into your house and put my name on stuff so that
when you are done with it you can call me to come over nad pick it up!

That's lousy. I get the impression that they know you or are at least
familiar with them. That makes a big difference your reaction.

I can understand it happening once, but for them to do it twice!!

My first thought was that an employee was going to sell it on an
online auction site.

You should have had the employee bring it in and not felt bad about
it.

Also, I understand that you are not asking for a$2 giftcard but for
them to cash-in the gift card already in your possession. (I read
another reply that misunderstood your post, probably reading too
quickly.)

It would be nice if they got that poster and gave you a call since
your number is probably still on the back of it.

I can't say that I see much resolution on this other than through the
local manager. Good Luck.

I'm sure they'll get right on giving you the $25 back..NOT! I can't
believe you even wrote this complaint about something you didn't get
for free.

Oh Please! You want a gift card in return for not getting something
you were not going to pay for anyway? How pathetic are you? It is
not a "policy" to give you the poster. They were offering it to be
nice, and it got lost in translation. Do you REALLY think you are
going to get ANYTHING from them for free now that you publicly wrote a
letter of complaint about them. So much for being a loyal customer.
Get a life!

Apparently you don't seem to grasp the concept of the term "loyal"
customer. A loyal customer shops at a store over other options and
for every need that retailer serves. They have usually shopped there
for years and know all the staff and wouldn't dream of giving their
business to another reatiler.

However, a "loyal" customer DOES NOT write off that chain because of
one bad incident and CERTAINLY not because they didn't get a free
poster.

And asking to be reimbursed for a gift card? Wow!

Reply
by PurPink Posted Mon January 7, 2008 @ 3:50 PM

I understand the principle - complaining about bad customer service.

However, you were going to get something for free. To complain about
that in such a manner is a bit childish. There is also a chance that
those posters are not suppose to be "given" to anyone - customers or
store employees.

To ask to be reimbursed for a gift card you purchased - did you give
it to someone? If you did, you gave them a gift and it is theirs to
do with what they want. If you got it for yourself, give it to
someone as a gift or donate it.
