Stop the False Advertising, Subway

Posted Thu January 10, 2008 12:00 pm, by Sidney M. written to Subway (Sandwich Shops)

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

Subway Sandwich Shops are liars and cheaters. Did you ever see the Subway commercials on TV? The sandwiches are so filled and packed. Try getting this in their stores. The sandwiches are flat as pancakes. It is false advertising and it should be stopped.

I would like Subway to stop the false advertising or have ALL their stores make their sandwiches as filled with meat as shown on the TV commercials.

THIS IS VERY TRUE. SUBWAY HAS BEEN HOLDING BACK ON PRODUCT. I CAN
UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S HARD TO MAKE EVERY SANDWICH LOOK LIKE THE ONE ON
TV, BUT THAT SAID, YOU HAVE TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR FALSE
ADVERTISING THAT THEY ARE CONSTANTLY BOMBARDING US WITH. THIS IS THE
REASON WHY PLACE SUCH AS QUIZNOS AND D'ANGELO ARE THRIVING. JUST AS
OTHER COMPANIES ARE HELD LIABLE FOR FALSE COMMERCIALS, SUBWAYS WILL
EVENTUALLY SUFFER THE CONSEQUANCES, SUCHS AS A POOR REPUTATION. WE
ALL KNOW, WHAT A BAD REPUTATION DOES TO A PLACE

Yes please, I'd like my subway sandwich just like the ones on tv! All
covered in chemicals and paints so it looks so delightfully fresh and
inviting.

To complain about food not looking like it does on Tv is insane. I
believe I was 9 when I first heard in school that they often use
mayonaise instead of milk in cereal commercials because it holds it's
form better and allows for "perfect" placement of each piece
of cereal.

Do you enjoy your cornflakes with mayo too?

I've never had a flat sandwich from them. In fact, when I get a wrap
it's kinda overstuffed.

When they make yours, there's no problem with asking for extra, if you
think it's not enough. You'll have to pay extra for meat and cheese,
but not veggies.

And, as others have pointed out - photography works wonders yes? At
the local giant camera store they specifically have equipment for
photographing food displays - light box filters, and stands. Using a
good focus, large pictures, and glazed food items it's not that hard
to get a tasty image produced.

and I can hear Michael Douglas saying "see, this is what I'm talking
about. In the picture it's plump and juicy...but look at this,
miserable, squashed thing. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this
picture? Anybody" while yielding an Uzi shooting up a "Whammyburger"
in the 1992 film Falling Down.

seriously dude, you sound psycho. All fast food advertising uses props
that are so exaggerated to "enhance texture".

are you off your meds?

Well, I'm not sure it's FALSE advertising, it's certainly DECEPTIVE
but isn't that true of all advertising? Getting real though, we ARE
talking about Subway. I don't think their sandwiches are all that
great. My biggest complaint is the quality of the toppings. Meats
are super poor quality, and veggies are often browning and nasty (this
depends on the franchise). I'd be more worried about that than the
advertising.

My subs always look and taste great. The key is not to go through the
drive through and actually go inside where you can regulate how much
of a topping portion you get. If they don't put enough on, you can
always ask for more.

Let me guess you also want the burgers that you get from fast food
places look like they do on tv. I don't know about you, but I would
rather have a sub quick, fast and in a hurry then have to wait for
like 45 minutes while they get it perfect.

Sidney M.,

So, I guess you don't buy the concept that cameras make you look 10
pounds heavier?

Seriously, photography of food is very hard to get right and most of
us expect that there will be variation between what you see and what
you get.

I'd use the photos on the menu boards for a more realistic
comparison.

Presumably, the posters make the products look as "packed." Simply
point to the sign and say "I want mine like that."

That said, I think you'll find that if you take out everything on your
sandwich, hire a professional food arranger (they can get paid quite a
bit) and ask them to put the SAME food back into the bread in a
"full-looking" way, you'll get something very close to what's on TV.

Problem is, the guy behind the counter isn't a high-paid food
arranger, with 3 hours to setup the "perfect" sandwich for the TV
shot. It's someone who's not getting paid even a living wage who has
to listen to people whine about sandwiches.

If they don't put enough of something on it, just ask for more -
they're making it right in front of you. It's not like they'll charge
you extra for more lettuce. I always ask them to pile on the veggies!

Why are you singling out Subway? A LOT of companies do this!

All commericals enhance the actual product. Where have you been
hiding. Subway doesn't skimp. If you need more food, then order
more!

I used to work at Subway. ): The reason the sandwiches look so big
and packed is because they set the meat on top of all the greens and
such. When they are made, it is opposite, the meat going on the
bottom. So of course they will look good on tv, they need to sell
them....my philosophy is though that the subs taste good and you are
eating it anyways so who cares what it looks like. After all, you
don't see the burgers at Mcdonalds looking like they do in the
commercials either...........they are all flat.

I just saw that on the commercials by SiouxFan Fri January 11, 2008 @ 12:12 AM

by dulynoted Posted Thu January 10, 2008 @ 5:31 PM

They could get the sanwhich to look as it does in the commercials if
they would "fold" the meats as done to make it look nice for the
advertising. But who has time. They also load it up with lettuce,
tomatoes and just about any other ingredient in their bins.

You can refold the meat if you want it to look like it does in the
pictures...but again who has time!

The real sandwich wouldn't make a pretty picture for a commercial
that's for sure. They have to make it look appetizing and show what
meats are on them. You really can't tell in the real sub unless you
open them up.

EVERY restaurant ad -- whether it's a television or print ad --
portrays their food in the most glamourous way possible. And they're
likely not using more ingredients in the ad, they just place them in a
way that makes it LOOK like the sandwich has more fixings. I learned
that from my ex who was in advertising.

If you're going to complain to Subway, you may as well complain to
every other restaurant out there.

This seems to be the way many fast food restaurants do things. I know
the McDonald's double cheeseburgers we sometimes get bear almost no
resemblance to the juicy looking burger masterpieces pictured on their
menu. And Taco Bell food almost never looks like it does on
the menu.

I'm sure there's some reason why this isn't false advertising, mainly
because these companies have huge legal departments that would
surely change the signs if it were. Still, I wish you luck in your
quest for a fast food sandwich that actually looks like it's
advertisement.

I could get mine to look like those if I ordered extra meat and
cheese. Its an additional fee of course

While I would be the first one to tell you that if you got in the
stores what you saw on tv you would end up paying probably 3 times as
much as you do now, I have to say I agree with you on this one.

Subway is the WORST about this I think. I pretty much quit going to
Subway because when I eat something like that, I go to Firehouse Subs.
But thats one of the reason I got so fed up with Subway. They really
are chintzy on their food. You are right about what you said however I
think you could have been a little more mature and professional about
your letter.

While there is no way they are going to make every sandwhich like the
ones on their commericals (unless you want to pay 10-15 dollars for a
sandwhich) they can meet half way and start putting a bit more actual
food in the bread.
