Put Ultimate Back in Your Crumb Cake, Entenmann's
Posted Thu January 24, 2008 3:01 am, by Venice G. written to Entenmann's
Write a Letter to this Company
I have been purchasing Entenmann's baked goods for well over thirty years, and my family has always enjoyed the abundance of varieties you offer in cakes, donuts and cookies.
Our favorite item in your line of cakes is the Ultimate Crumb Cake, especially the chocolate version. Lately, the chocolate one has not been available in my area, so I have been purchasing the original plain one (with no filling). Each time I buy one, however, I notice that is looks less and less like the Ultimate Crumb Cake, and more like an ordinary crumb cake. At first I thought the cake was mistakenly put in the wrong box, but after purchasing a few more, I realized that was not the case. Our favorite Ultimate Crumb Cake has been reduced to just another common cake, leaving me with no incentive to choose your brand over someone else's.
I realize that the prices of ingredients such as milk and eggs have risen substantially, and normally I would suggest a price increase over a decrease in quality, but in the case of your Ultimate Crumb Cake, I can't imagine paying anymore than it already costs. The only way I would continue to purchase this item is if you restore it to the original quality without a price increase. I also realize that might result in a slight reduction in profit on this particular item, but I think it would be a small price to pay for the amount of satisfied customers who will continue to buy this product.
Thank you for considering my suggestion, and I look forward to hearing from you with good news.

I so did not need this today Venice!
Now you made me drool all over my keyboard!
But seriously, I have to wonder if they just didn't ship any to your area recently or if it's one of the items they discontinued.
I wanted to go to the Outlet this weekend anyway - I'll look to see if we have any here for ya : )

Great letter! I hope they listen. I love their donuts. =) Some of their products were sold at Tastee, a baked goods store that would sell food that was close to its experation date at a reduced price. Entenmann's products were there some times and all of their products were still fresh well over the experation date. MMMM... I got a craving now... I hope they step up and make top-notch foods again.

My nana always used to buy the one with the raspberry filling-is that the Ultimate Crumb Cake?
If so, that's good stuff and I can't imagine them changing it.

mmm... entanmann's.... yummmmm....
To bad about the slipping of quality. But your letter just tempted me to stop at the Entanmann's "outlet" near me for a yummy treat after work!
"Our favorite Ultimate Crumb Cake has been reduced to just another common cake" I dont know why, but that line made me chuckle. Maybe I'm over-caffinated.
Hope you hear back from them! (with positive changes, of course!)

I had one of these last week because Giant had Entenmann's buy one get one free. It was pretty blah compared to what it used to be.
If they ever change my Etenmann's marshmallow iced devil's food cake I will be one unhappy girl! That's the best PMS cake.

Hi, everybody!.. thanks for responding. There has been an interesting turn of events.
I was at the store and looked at an Ultimate Crumb Cake to see if it was any different than the one I had at home. It was! It not only felt twice as heavy, but it looked like the Ultimate Crumb Cake I know and love. So now I'm back to thinking that mine was put in the wrong box. The reason I wrote the letter was because the last few I bought were not up to par, but this last one was really pathetic.
I saved the product info from the box, so if they contact me, I'll have the necessary information. I know this is not an earth shattering matter, but now I'm curious to see what they have to say.
The saga continues.. Stay tuned!

Has anyone else noticed the weights have decreased on a lot of their products as the prices increased?
I totally agree with you. The ultimate crumb used to be very generous with the crumb part, it's what made it worth buying in the first place. They made an excellent Louisiana glazed crumb cake that was flavored with orange. I used to slather on hot fudge and a scoop of ice cream (sigh, I miss that!)
Tastycake also tried to compete with them for awhile, and their crumb cake was pretty decent, but they went back to making luch sized pre-packaged pastries again.
Great Letter! I hope they respond.

Off topic - They had another flavor of the Ultimate Crumb Cake in my area for awhile. Did you try or do you remember that? It wasn't perfect, but it was the flavor I preferred. I guess my tastes weren't "mainstream" enough.
My local Wegmans increased the cost of its store-baked donuts two months ago 50%. A few weeks ago, I noticed the price went up another 12.5% over the original price, a total increase of 62.5%. I had wrote forms of complaint on both occasions. After the second time, I received a call from Wegmans corporate. The man told me "There is a two month supply of grain for the entire world right now. Our costs have gone through the roof."
I also noticed two weeks ago the prices of the commercially baked goods at Wegmans went up about 10%.
I don't know how or if this fits into the situation at Entenmann's (it seems like it may).
In any event, I hope Entenmann's improves the quality of the product so as to retain loyal longtime customers like you. I'm not sure what's going to happen with prices. Good luck.

but everything tasted sweeter than the regular stuff. That's because they had to use more sugar to make up for the reduced fat. I also remember the low carb line, but that didn't last very long. I give them credit for trying to keep up with the current trends and don't blame them for discontinuing items. I just wish they wouldn't mess with the classics!
