Kentucky Fried Chicken Asked Me to Break the Law!

Posted Tue March 4, 2008 12:00 pm, by Marian H. written to Kentucky Fried Chicken

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

Dear KFC Corporation and Yum! Brands, Inc.,

This letter is in regard to my most recent visit to a KFC restaurant and the atrocious customer service I experienced from several different employees.

I used the drive-thru of Store #H730-069 in Woodland Hills, CA. I placed my order just after 7:00pm. The young man (who I later found out was named S****) was abrupt and I needed to repeat the order several times and order alternate items there were "out" -- for example, I requested a pot pie and he said (and I quote!!), "Uh.... we don't got no more pot pies, you want something else?" I ordered something else, and he immediately said, "Okay, pull up and pay me."

The thing is, I wasn't finished ordering. I told him that I also wanted a 12-piece order of chicken strips. His response? "Uh...hang on, let me see if I have any more." Mind you, one of the other items I had ordered was a 3-strip combo. When he came back he said, "Do you really want those strips? We have to cook more and it will be ten minutes."

I told him I would wait the ten minutes, which was fine. Previous visits to this particular restaurant usually involved a wait that long anyway, so I didn't mind. He again said, "Okay pull up and pay me."

I pulled ahead and waited several minutes before anyone came to the window. He eventually came to the window and only *then* did he ring up my order. I paid the order and was given my credit card receipt. I asked for the other receipt, too, and he said, "Oh, it'll be in the bag I guess."

He then said, "Okay, you'll have the strips in about ten minutes." I responded, "But that's what you told me several minutes ago." He just walked away and didn't acknowledge that I'd said anything. I was watching the clock, though, because I had a feeling that they didn't even start cooking the strips until after I paid.

Eight minutes later, a truck pulled up behind me in line. He came to the window and asked me to pull forward and they would bring my food out. The only problem with that there is very little of a parking lot and drive-thru for this particular restaurant it is all within a very, very narrow alley of sorts and empties right into a very busy street. There was only one possible spot I could have pulled to, but it was a clearly marked spot for disabled parking only. So I asked him, "Pull up where? There's no place I can go."

"Park over there in the handicapped spot," he said.

I told him that I was not disabled and I was not entitled to park there. He said, "Just park over there lady! There are others behind you!" He was clearly getting upset because by now, there were two other cars that had pulled up, but there was no place for me to go.

I told him that I would not pull forward into a disabled spot because it was against the law for me to park there. He sighed loudly and slammed the window shut before disappearing. By now, a full ten minutes had passed and I expected them to hand me the rest of my order any moment. Instead, I saw two other employees walk by the window, look at me...laugh...and walk away. He came back to the window with a bag of food...but it wasn't mine. He popped out the window again and said, "Nothing will happen to you, it's okay to park there. Just go park over there."

At this point, I was irritated, but I did remain calm and said, "Thank you but I'd really prefer to remain right here until my order is ready." He said, "But I'm going to get into trouble." I told him that that wasn't my fault.

By that point, the other two employees I had seen previously were all standing near the window. They were all laughing and looking between myself and toward the back of the cooking area. I become extremely uncomfortable and didn't feel as if the order they were supposedly making for me was going to be up to food service standards. I waved to them and motioned for the female (who I assumed to be the one in charge) so I could speak with her. She didn't come. Instead she kept laughing and made an "okay" with her hand and waved it toward me with a look of condescension on her face.

I finally had to yell through the window, "I'd like to speak to the person in charge, please."

The female pushed the third employee forward -- his name was J****. He opened the window, laughing, and said...quite exaggerated, "Si?" I asked if I could speak to the manager and he said in broken English, "Manager no here."

I then asked, "Who is in charge?"

The female yelled from behind, "I am!" while laughing with S****.

I asked J****, "What's her name?"

He said, "Supervisor."

I repeated myself, "What's her name?"

Instead of answering, the female yelled over his head. My name is M****."

"Can I speak with you?"

"I don't think so," she laughed, and walked away toward the front.

By that time, it had been 15 minutes since I had paid and 20 minutes since I had ordered. That was more than enough time to deliver my order. I motioned for S**** and said, "May I please just have my money back for the strips, now?"

"Why?" he asked, "just a few more minutes! I told you ten minutes!"

"It's been well over ten minutes and I'm done here. Please just refund my money so I can be on my way."

He slammed the window shut again but I could still hear him tell M****, "Now she wants her money back! I already gave her food!"

M**** walks up to the window to the cash register and then asks me through the window (without opening it), "Didn't you get your food?" I said, "All but the strips."

"Well, the strips are almost done, just wait for them."

I told her that I didn't want to wait any longer.

"Why not?"

I was honest, I said, "It's been longer than ten minutes and I just don't trust you guys right now because you've been laughing and when I asked to speak to you, you refused. I'm not an idiot...I know what you guys are doing to my order and I just want my money back."

She turned back to the register and said, "I can't figure this out..." and walked away, returning later with some cash to reimburse me for the part of the order I no longer wanted. Before handing it to me, though, she looked toward the back and then said, "Your strips are done now can I just give them to you instead?" I heard lots of laughter in the background.

I said, "You really must think I'm an idiot to fall for it. No, just give me my money."

While she handed the money to me, she said, "You're an idiot anyway."

I don't think she meant for me to hear that, but I heard it just fine.

So, in the course of 20 minutes, I experienced the following:

1. Rude, hurried order taker.
2. Restaurant with several menu items either out of stock or not cooked and ready for orders.
3. An employee requesting that I break the law so he wouldn't "get into trouble".
4. An order that I was willing to wait for not delivered in the time promised.
5. A supervisor unwilling to talk with me.
6. Said supervisor sending another employee to talk to me instead.
7. Said employee had limited English speaking ability and clearly had no business handling a customer service issue.
8. Multiple employees laughing and very clearly "up to something" in the back of the cooking area.
9. Supervisor calling me an idiot.

Now, given my choice of words I opened the door for M**** to call me a name, but it is still no excuse. I never called any of them a name, nor was I ride to them in any way. While I don't *for sure* know that the employees were doing something to my food, their behavior left no confidence that I'd be receiving what I'd ordered. While I'd like to think that they wouldn't do such a thing...remember, S**** had already asked me to break the law, so why would a few health regulations make any difference to them? No customer should be treated that way, and no customer should EVER be asked to break the law.

I got my money back, so that's fine. But in the end, the behavior of at least three of those employees left me with little confidence that I want to eat at that restaurant again. I expect that these employees will be properly dealt with...especially M****, who I expect to be terminated immediately. Yes, I do believe she should be fired. Her behavior was atrocious and there was no excuse for it. I was a customer and should never have been asked to break the law or be called an idiot...much less the rest of the customer service issues in play here. Please educate your employees better. Please have sufficient stock of food on hand during the dinner rush. Don't let supervisors let employees with limited communication skills handle customer service. Oh, and an apology would be nice, too. I will be posting this on PlanetFeedback.com in addition to sending a copy to KFC and Yum! Brands headquarters.

If I was in your shoes (probably cheapest pair in the clearance
basket), I would've stopped listening as soon as the first
disrespectful word left the first guy's mouth. My next action would
have been to park at the most accessible parking spot, head inside to
counter, and request a face-to-face w/ the loud mouth. If he was
willing to commence w/ unprovoked rudeness, we would see how well he
absorbed a right hook and other haymakers that follow in rapid
succession. I have little for patience for one's inability to keep
their misery contained as not to mouth off or treat me in a manner
other than that which they've received from myself. If the manager
wanted to mistreat me, Id contact superiors up the chain of command
daily and one by one until I had resolution to a point of personal
contentment. I've had my share of dissatisfaction in the arena of
customer service experiences and Im batting 1000 on redemption. Fuck
rude people!

Good god, what a terrible experience! I agree with those who said you
need to contact the head office directly; that kind of unprofessional
behaviour should certainly not be tolerated, even though it is 'just
KFC' their job there is still to serve customers. You were probably
quite wise to not take the strips. I've worked in fast food myself
and while I'd never tamper with a customer's food no matter how big a
jerk they were, that certainly doesn't mean it never happens. In my
mind you weren't asking for anything unreasonable. He told you about
the wait, you accepted it/ Would they have paid the ticket if you'd
gotten dinged for parking in the handicap spot? The place is badly
set up if there's no place for drive-thru customers to park if there's
a wait.

You need to find out who the regional or district manager is and
really follow up with this. That entire store needs an overhaul from
cashiers to managers. I dont eat at kfc, cheap food, bad service, who
knows what is in it...

I don't buy anything from KFC because of the animal rights issues, but
I know how you feel. He clearly from saying "We don't got no more pot
pies" doesn't have many other job choices. Most of the people I have
dealt with at fast food places are pretty nice, but it also depends on
the area. Some are just people that bought way into the whole Rap
Culture and have no idea how to "Speak" with someone; making their job
choices fast food or a tow truck driver. It is good that you are
filing this complaint though. I just don't think KFC really cares
about 1 customer, dealing with 1 store. Just know that the guy is
destined to spend his one life on earth as a failure. Leaving no mark
on this planet. His ashes will fade into the wind and no one will miss
his presence. That is how I keep things like this from bothering me
too much. So I hope he is happy with not showing any respect to you,
and most likely others. Now 1 less person cares about him.

I agree that you should have gotten your food in a timely manner, they
should not have asked you to pull inot a handicap spot though, only
because should a patron who is handicap need to use the spot it would
not be available. You are definatley a more patient person than I am
because I would have probably flew though that window when they
started treating me like crap.
I understand why you are complainig and I feel you have every right
to. When you dine out whether it be fast food or a dit down meal the
prices that you pay you deserve to be treated properly. If it wasn't
for consumers they wouldn't have their jobs.

You write well. I felt as if I was there reading this. And I have
worked in kitchens, and I know what workers do to the food if they
decide they don't like a customer. Your portrayal of the laughter was
convincing, and your fear of them laughing some more as they spit or
pissed on your food justified.
This place is run by a bunch of idiots, probably on drugs, and should
not be tolerated by KFC management. I hope they get the message and do
something about it.

I have to say I'm with you here. Parking in the handicapped spot
shouldn't really be the issue. I think customer service itself is the
issue. I don't think I would have wasted any time getting home and
calling the district manager. There really is no excuse for that kind
of treatment. Handicapped spot available or not.
I would have asked for a full refund as well and given them back the
food I already had.
Truly unbelievable. And really KFC has gone down hill for sure. I

As a cop, and as someone who HATES people that park in handicapped
spaces, (and I have NO problem ticketing people for it) I can tell you
that in a situation like this, it's NOT that big of a deal to jump in
that space. You were not planning on being there that long, and if
you were really staying in your car, if someone wanted that space, all
you had to do was move. I don't understand why you did not just pull
up? There usually is space for you to move up and let cars go around
you. And as far as the behavior of the employees, it sounds like they
did not handle the situation very well. But, then you brought
yourself down to their level, trying to place the dominance game. So,
in the end you ALL were wrong.

Uh-huh, next time behave like an adult, take the high road and move
your car so the people behind you can get their food. The handicapped
space might have been the only 'convenient' space, so that means you
should have found an inconvenient space to wait for your food. There
was no reason for you to inconvenience all the people behind you
because you wanted to play juvenile dominance games with the workers.

Handicapped parking space issue aside - - this complaint is more about
the fact that you didn't get your 12-piece chicken strip order
precisely within the 10 minutes you were originally quoted and you
refused to move your car out of the drive-thru to allow those behind
you to place and receive their orders. Yes - - the KFC employees
didn't provide a high level of customer service but it appears you are
the one that started the verbal volley and it escalated out of
control.

I've been to a lot of fast food restaurants, but I can honestly say
that KFC is by far the worst in terms of customer service. They are
constantly running out of things, the employees are rude, and the
restaurants themselves are more often than not filthy! I like KFC's
food, but I almost never go there for this reason. Colonel Sanders
would roll over in his grave if he knew what KFC has become. I would
consider reporting this restaurant as I wonder if that might be a
violation of ADA (Americans w/ Disabilities Act). I applaud you for
taking a stand on that, my grandmother was in a wheelchair and few
things chap my ass off more than able-bodied lowlifes who park in
handicapped spots. Good luck with your letter.

Eh, what a crazy situation. The way I look at it is you both are at
fault. They were going to cook more food but it takes time. They asked
you to pull into a spot so that other people could be served and you
dug in your heels and wouldn't budge. If you were so afraid to break
the law, you could've just driven around and gotten back in line but
no.. like I said, you dug in your heels and wouldn't budge. Naturally,
the fact that you refused to move is going to set the employees off
because they have a line of people waiting for food as well and they
cannot take care of them because you refuse to move. And I'm quite
sure those customers weren't going to be too happy because you refused
to move and the employees knew that they were going to hear it from
them as well. This is a situation that can escalate and although the
employees were acting a fool, you didn't help the situation either.

This is exactly why I stopped going to KFC around the time they
abbreviated "Kentuckey Fried Chicken" to make it sound more "healthy".
The ones near me took a massive nosedive in customer service, but yet
they still seem to keep customers coming back. I just don't get it,
how can they treat customers so poorly and still remain in business?
I think you did the best you could under the circumstances. I admire
you for trying your best to be patient, but the fact remains you
deserved much better treatment, and I hope that they at least have the
decency to try to make things right.

I also admire you for not breaking the law. Had you been ticketed, I'm
sure whoever told you to park there wouldn't interviene on your
behalf, let alone offer to pay the fine.

at KFC. Well, I used to, when I went for Honey BBQ wings. They
switched that product to synthetic meat, so I will probably not set
foot in KFC ever again.

They told you the product needed to be cooked. By ordering it, you
created a road block in the drive through line. Did you expect to
sit at the window for 10 minutes and that not to cause an issue? If I
were in that situation, and I had to have that item, I would find
somewhere to park (even if it empties onto a busy street), because I
would know it is unreasonable to sit there with the line shut down for
that long.

I agree that handicapped parking spaces are not a joke and should only
be used by those that truly need them - - and that the use of same
should be enforced. However, as far as the remainder of the complaint
is concerned - - yes - - you received poor customer service but life
is just too short to get this worked up over KFC. It also sounds like
you perhaps escalated the situation by engaging in a rally of
conversation with the workers that appeared to go downhill rapidly.
You may expect KFC to terminate M**** immediately but their employee
relations are none of your business. Don't hold your breath waiting
for the ever useless apology - - just dine elsewhere in the future.

and it's usually up to the business whether they ask non-handicapped

Ok, I agree. That just sucked. I agree that the "supervisor" on duty
should be disciplined (possibly fired) but unfortunately the only way
you'd be able to find out what happened is to go back there to see if
she's working. I doubt that you'll be privy to what (if any!) action
is taken.
I do hope that they clean up their act.
Your letter seems to be pretty level headed considering what happened.

Don't let this ruin KFC for you, though. The one near me (Fallon, NV)
is awesome. They have a drive thru, but it's usually crammed, so it's
actually faster to go in and order. The girl that's usually there is
great. One time they were behind on biscuits, so she offered me
either to wait or to pick a different large side. I considered myself
lucky that I got TWO cole slaws (possibly the best food ever created
in the fast-food world!) and I didn't have to wait 10 miutes for my
biscuits. Top it all off, she did it with an apologetic smile on her
face. Hopefully, the person with whom they replace that no-good
supervisor at your location will whip the place back into shape!
Good luck and let us know what happens!

Obviously, this is amazingly bad service. No question.

But what of this issue of the handicapped parking.

This occurred in California. According the California DMV, "Parking
is permitted only for a disabled person who displays a placard or
disabled person or disabled veteran license plates. Disabled people
with a placard or special plates may park in special areas for
unlimited periods of time, regardless of time restrictions. No one
else may park there. Qualified persons may apply at any DMV office for
a parking placard or special plates. An identification card will be
issued to holders of disabled person or disabled veteran license
plates. NOTE: Placard abuse results in loss of special parking
privileges. It is also a misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of up
to $1000, imprisonment in county jail for up to six months, or both."

OK, but is it considered parking to sit in your car with the motor
on?

According to CA DMV, parking is "the standing of a vehicle, whether
occupied or not, otherwise than temporarily for the purpose of and
while actually engaged in loading or unloading merchandise or
passengers."

So, the argument can be made that loading food into your car from the
KFC is not parking. However, given that you're not "ACTUALLY"
(there's a reason they add this word) engaged in loading merchandise,
this can be considered "parking."

So, it is a violation of the law.

Which brings up the second part of the question: does the law apply to
private property? As far as I can tell, it does.

However...

If you're in the car, with the engine on, and a police officer
arrives, chances are that you'd be asked to leave and not fined.
Unless the police officer is looking to "make quota" or has a personal
issue with people filling handicapped spaces, this is a classic
situation for a warning.

By the way... impeding the flow of traffic can also be illegal. So
your solution to just stay in line may be no better than waiting it
out in the handicapped spaces.

Nonetheless, this KFC is clearly rotten and I cannot imagine anyone
eating there.

Wow, what a ordeal to go thru.

Our KFC here has gone downhill also.

I dont mind waiting 10 mins for chicken to cook (hey fresh chicken)

But last time we went we where getting the Chick Fried Steak

They where out of

Coleslaw
Mac and Ch
Baked Beans
Corn on the cob.

So for sides we could have mashed potatoes/gravey or tator wedges.

What a nightmare. I'd say there definitely wasn't a manager on duty
and they are running it themselves amuk. I hate when they split up the
order too, the first part gets cold by the time you get the rest of it
anyway.

I honestly cannot think of the last time I received good service at a
KFC store. They are either out of food, or the staff is rude, or it
takes you a half hour to get your food.

One time we went in around 8:00 at night. I wanted to order the
16-piece bucket, and the girl said "I don't know if we have that much
chicken. Do you want to get something else?" I replied no, I came
for chicken, so she turned around and yelled to the cook "We don't got
enough chicken for a 16-piece, do we?" The cook yelled back "No, but
I can put some in, it'll be 10 minutes!"

The girl turned to me and said "It's gonna take 10 minutes - you don't
want to wait, do you?" I looked at her and said "Gee, I guess I
don't!"

We turned around, went to Popeye's who gladly accepts all coupons, and
had a fantastic dinner.

This probably is the most disturbing thing I have heard. It is THE
definition of bad customer service. I am surprised you stayed as calm
as you did. I tried to imagine myself in your position, and I don't
know if I would have been able to put up with half of the things that
you did before I would snap. That's craziness and I hope all those
involved that day are dealt with accordingly.

There are two independantly owned KFCs in my town and they are both
like this. I almost never go there.

do what NYC does and list plate numbers. The one convenience the tag
has is that, if I'm out with my neighbor, I can take my tag along so
she can park in the spot (with me). I would gladly give up that one
convenience if it meant tighter control on the tags.

I have two issues. Here is NY, it's an automatic renewal, no
recertification by a doctor. They send you a form, you fill it out
and return it. The other thing that bothers me is that any doctor can
sign the form. I'm sure there are many out there who are willing to
sign it when the person really doesn't have a valid disability. I
think those doctors should be fined.
