I tried Pantene once, when I was 16. My thick, long hair started to fall out. I stopped using it and it stopped falling out. Pantene is simply a chemical that coats your hair, from the follicle, which suffocates and dries out your hair- causing the damaged, broken, and loss. Don't use this crap product!

For the last few years I have been using Aveeno and Paul Mitchel products and my hair was great, but the products are expensive. When I couldn't afford them I used Finesse and never had any problems with my hair falling out. A few years ago I bought some Pantene and immediately noticed my hair was falling out by the handfuls every time I shampooed. There was so much hair in the drain and on the bathroom floor that I thought I was suffering from a vitamin deficiency. I never thought it was related to the shampoo. When I resumed using Aveeno products, my hair stopped shedding. A year later I ended up with Pantene and the same thing happened so I became suspicious. After a few years of observation I am without a doubt convinced it is Pantene and now I am pissed. A month ago I needed shampoo and conditioner and a friend stopped at the store and grabbed what he thought was good quality hair products, knowing how I love to take good care of my long silky shiny hair. When I saw he bought Pantene my reaction was to give it away to someone and go to the store myself. I now wish I had because I knew better from past experience. Unfortunately I thought "maybe I'll give it a try. I can't really be the shampoo or they wouldn't sell the stuff". My hair started falling out and I thought maybe It's because I didn't brush it enough during the day and now it's all coming out at once. I kept making excuses for this product and blaming myself and I used it for two weeks! I am angry at myself now because yesterday I finally realized how thin my hair is. I feel like I am going bald. It's horrible and I am going on vacation with my mother whom I have not seen in almost two years. I look terrible with thin, thin hair and thought I might have a disease or vitamin deficiency. Thanks for everyone who wrote about this. Pantene does suck....NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I would not doubt that the Pantene is a problem for you but that does not make Pantene responsible. A lot of people are allergic to Pantene much the way that a lot of people are allergic to Tide laundry detergent. It does not make it the companies fault. Pantene is probably not the cause of your hair loss. I would go out on a limb and wager that you have the same problem that I do and dermatitis triggered by the Pantene is causing your hair loss. Change shampoos and in about three months (a typical hair cycle) you will see regrowth. The fifty bucks should cover a new hair style to help it look a little fuller until then.

Hair loss can also be caused by certain prescription medications, other than cancer medications. I know this from personal experience.

I would suggest contacting a doctor to find out what's causing it.
You might feel that the only thing you changed was using Pantene but it might not be the case.
For example, stress, excessive hair coloring, genetics, and even constantly wearing hats can cause hair loss.
However Pantene isn't liable for your doctor bills just because you think their product might have given you hair loss.
By that reasoning, if I ever have a tooth ache, I could just say "Well Crest did this to me! They need to pay for me to see a dentist."
Unless you have actual proof - other than you own assumptions - you will not legally be able to get more out of them.

Considering stress also leads to hair falling out you should relax.
Have you gone to a Dr. to confirm that Pantene makes your hair fall out?
I don't use mass produced brand name shampoos and conditioners anymore because of the preservatives they put in the ingrediants to make the product last longer on the shelves in stores.
I suggest talking to a Dr. and a hair care specialist so you can find out the problems and find hair care products that work for you and are healthy on your hair and scalp.

I just had to come online to do a search on Pantene and hair loss and was surprised at all the hits I found. I have used Pantene for years. In the beginning it didn't do anything but make my hair the envy of everyone I was around. My hair was naturally thick, straight, black and already shiny. Well, add the Pantene and it looked like the models advertised on TV. In the past couple of years, I've noticed more hairloss. I thought it was because I was getting older. But the thing is, both my parents have all their hair. No baldness in my family. Yet, though I don't show any baldness, I know by the feel of it that I have only half the hair I used to have (and my family members agree with me).
I thought sometimes maybe it was the Pantene so I would take a break from it and switch using it with other shampoos including organic ones. But I missed the way the Pantene made my hair look so I would always go back to it. Sometimes I'd run out of shampoo but still have the conditioner so it was always never more than a couple of days that I would go without using it. Well, a couple of weeks ago I ran out of all my Pantene products entirely. So, I used only some Prell or organic stuff. Lo and behond, today was the first day that I didn't lose about a dozen strands of hair while shampooing and then another 20 out while blow drying.
I am so happy to finally find the cause of my hairloss. I am sorry to know that it is Pantene, because it really does make your hair beautiful. I'm also sorry to know that though people have complained to Pantene about the hairloss, the complaints have been ignored and pooh-poohed by others who may have used it on occasion and not had a problem with it. Well, I didn't have a problem either in the beginning.
Now, I just hope that my hair comes back in as thick or nearly as thick as it was. I have a feeling that it may be too late and those hair follicles have probably been damaged permanently.

I seriously doubt the cause of your hair loss is this conditioner or whatever the heck it is as you didn't specify. Go to a doctor and get some proof that the hair loss is caused by a foreign substance and not your own body. Then, when you have found that its not cancer or aids causing the hair problem, hire a lawyer. They're not going to just give you thousands of dollars on a whim.

seriously, you need to get to a doctor. losing more than 100 hairs or so per day is a warning bell. i don't think it's the shampoo. i am dead serious, please make an appointment with a physician.

Please go to the doctor and get yourself checked out, Amy. I don't know if it is or isn't the Pantene causing your hair loss, but I know that when I started losing alarming handfuls of hair in the shower it turned out to be a symptom of a thyroid condition. Had that condition not been treated, my life would be very different today and in the years to come. Even if it does turn out to just be a reaction to the Pantene, it's better to know for sure. Good luck to you, however it works out. And again, PLEASE go see a doctor!

I have never heard of an over-the-counter shampoo causing hair loss. There are a million other things that could cause it (judging by this letter, stress might be a factor, and genetics plays a huge role), and Pantene did not need to send you fifty bucks.

This is news to me, I have been using Pantene for years and I also have lots of hair falling out but chalked it up to getting it colored/etc. This alarms me. I must have spent hundreds of dollars on this stuff. I did notice that Pantene Restoratives caused tons of my hair to fall out and I stopped using that, but the regular stuff? Does anyone have any other recommendations on what to use, not only for me but for the poster? I feel her pain!

Pantene is known to cause hair loss. I used it for years, and could never figure out why I was losing more strands than usual. I thought maybe it was just my body changing. Then I started to hear the rumors so I stopped using it, and before I knew it, my hair was back to its old self. From what I understand, it's the chemical that they use to make your hair "smooth and shiny" that coats it and causes hair loss.
Put some of that $50 towards some of the Neutrogena shampoo that is clairfying. That should get some of the buildup out. And don't worry, your hair will start to fill out again quickly.
As for your letter, you probably should have saved it and re-read it when you had calmed down a little. But at this point, there's not much they can do for you. You just have to stop using their product. I've been seeing these letters come through PFB for years, and it looks like Pantene still hasn't changed their product.

Wow, I think this is the first time I've seen someone upset because a company sent them a generous gesture. I don't know what's contributing to your hair loss problem, it could be any number of factors either on their own, or in combination with this product. Body chemistry, stress, hormonal changes, environmental factors, medicines, etc may come into play.
While it's an unpleasant situation, proving it was the product alone would have to come before holding them accountable.

perhaps it is a medical issue, or stress. My advice is to make an appointment with your physician to see what the problem is. And consider the fifty bucks a "freebie."

Just accept that reality and go to your doctor to figure it out. It's not the shampoo. It's something else. Do you have a lot of stress in your life? Semi-permanent hair loss is sometimes due to a high level of stress.

I realize you are probably upset, which would explain the tone of your letter, but I also think you might actually have a valid concern about the shampoo. I've read other letters here with the same complaint, which leads me to believe there might be something to it. I have been using Pantene shampoo for a few years now with no problems, but that doesn't mean it isn't causing problems for other people.
The thing is, without first seeing a doctor, there is no way of knowing what's causing your hair loss. For the sake of your health, get a doctor's opinion before deciding the shampoo is the culprit just in case there's something else going on.

The average human loses 100 hairs from their head each day--some lose more, some lose less. You need to go to a doctor to find out the cause of your hair loss. Unless YOU'RE a doctor or scientist, you can't possibly know that it's the shampoo that's causing your hair to fall out. You also could have breakage -- quite a different thing than hair loss.

The tone of this letter is completely inappropriate and probably not going to get the response you are seeking. I use Pantene, my hair isn't falling out. More likely you should make an appointment to see what it was in the Pantene that caused your hair to fall out because it is likely to be in other shampoos as well.

First of all, I would strongly advise getting yourself under control.
Writing a letter to a company that is titled "Pissed off" is neither appropriate nor is it effective. Secondly you have no proof that they are responsible for your hair loss. It would be nice to assume that they are at fault, but stress, allergies, infections, heredity, any number of factors could be what has led to your hair falling out.
If you have an allergy to something in their product that you were not aware of - how is that their problem or responsibility to send you to a doctor and pay for it? Bottom line is that it's not.
At a minimum, you need to re-write this letter after you have sufficiently calmed down. But then you need to see a Dr. and find out what is going on without jumping to conclusions and accusing an entire company with baseless claims like this.
Let us know what you find out.
