PetsMart Food Selections

Posted Mon March 24, 2008 8:31 pm, by JoAnne N. written to PetsMART

Write a Letter to this Company

Being the owner of 4 dogs and 3 cats, I find myself often in need of pet supplies- probably more often than groceries. I prefer shopping at PetsMart more than Petco due to the overall cleanliness of their stores and the better organization of the items. Unfortunately I find that I am forced to shop at Petco in order to purchase better quality foods. Petco carries more of the natural, holistic brands that PetsMart does not.

I can't think of one brand of food in PetsMart that I would trust to feed my pets. I would love to see PetsMart carry some of the same brands as Petco such as Halo's Spots Stew products, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack and especially the Wellness wet cat food pouches to name a few.

Since the pet food recalls last year there are many consumers such as myself that have turned to alternatives from your everyday commercial brands. If PetsMart would carry some of these, I'm sure they would increase business. I, for one would never have the need to step foot in a Petco.

Good for you for caring enough to learn about what foods are good or
bad and for feeding wholesome, holistic high-quality foods!

I also was looking to upgrade my cats food, usually I would buy them
purina cat chow, but after some research I decided to feed them better
:) So i surfed petsmart's website and the selection wasnt very good! I
walked to the family-owned pet supply store up the street from me and
their selection was unbeatable, and the prices were comparable to
other stores. (and they have a frequent buyer thing, 10th bag of pet
food is free!)

Support your local business and find a family-owned store. :)

Thank you so much for writing this letter! This is a issue of mine as
well. The only food I might feed my dogs at PetSmart is Blue Buffalo.
Really, there are the same brands I can buy at the grocery store or
Walmart so why would I go to PetSmart to buy the same bad dog/cat
food? Petco sells a wonderful variety of dog and cat foods, treats,
and more. It would be nice to one day walk into a Petsmart and be able
to buy quality food for my dogs.

You have some great suggestions, however, it's not that easy for a
purchaser to get the same items. The doggy world is different than the
human world. Buyers are stuck alot of time trying to get a product
and find that they are in contract with a competitor and unable to
provide their patrons with the supplies they desire.

I whole heartedly hope that PetsMart can obtain the product you
desire. If at the very least the equivalent to what you would like.

Good.

I'm an animal mommy too, 3 cats Harley, Taz and Moo, and a dog,
Liberty the Schipperke. I avoid both those stores because neither of
them carry everything I feed them. Liberty will only eat Moist and
Meaty. They told us that when we adopted her. We tried to feed her a
better quality food but she'd rather starve.

The cats eat Iams dry and Whiskas moist. Again, I tried others and
they turned up their noses at the food.

Believe it or not, Rocky, the feral cat that I feed only likes the
Iams too!

Hi JoAnne. Thanks for being a loving person! Too many times people
who are taking care of our animals clearly should not be. I am going
to ask...have you discussed this with the manager of PetsMart? I'm
not sure if he/she could order you some of the food you like. I know
it's not the same, but on many occaisions if I want to see a
particular food item in my local Publix...I ask the manager about
stocking the item. He always orders it for me...calls me when it
comes in. If it doesn't sell that's another story but perhaps he/she
would be willing to stock the items for you if you ask? Just a
thought?

"Being the owner of 4 dogs and 3 cats.."

JoAnne, you should know by now that no one ever "owns" cats. We are
not their owners or guardians; we are simply the people they have
chosen with the honor of providing for their every need. :)

Good letter and great suggestions.

It is so nice to read a calm, polite and helpful suggestion on this
board without hysteria and threats of never shopping at the store
again unless the suggestion/demand is met - or requests for free
stuff.

And a very good suggestion it is as well!

"Since the pet food recalls last year there are many consumers such as

brands."

I certainly understand and appreciate your caution. But do you know
who makes these other foods, how, and where? How can you be certain
that they're any safer?

I see your point...but..... by Jo23 Tue March 25, 2008 @ 3:32 PM

Thanks so much for all the responses. I often have to stop at Petco or
one of the independent pet shops for my babies food. Right now the
doggies are loving Halo's Spots Stew and I like it because I have one
with a sensitive tummy and it doesn't seem to upset it. The cats
however don't really care for it and I have to go to a small,
independent shop for their wet food which is Wellness. On top of all
that I usually go to PetsMart for toys and other supplies because the
Petcos around here are just icky for lack of a better description and
don't have as good of a selection of toys. They smell like a barnyard
and there are always pallets blocking the isles which is annoying to
say the least. I just hate to go there. It would be nice if I could
get everything in one place and I can't understand why PetsMart has
been so slow to carry some of the better brands.

Please, do stop back and tell us what happens. You raise some great
points here.

Kudos to you for feeding your animals high quality food!

I have also found that Petsmart is much cleaner than Petco. I feed my
babies (2 cats, 1 dog) a food that you can only get at pet stores that
aren't huge chains so I NEVER have to go to Petco, but if I want to
get cat or dog toys I always, ALWAYS pick Petsmart over Petco.

Petsmart over Petco by RedheadwGlasses Tue March 25, 2008 @ 12:36 AM

This is a good suggestion.

You might ask PetSmart if they'll special-order the food for you. If
you have other pet-owning friends, convince them to do the same.
Enough special orders or requests, and management will likely add the
product to the lineup.

You might also check out small, locally-owned independent pet shops.
They sell the high-quality food you seek, and often at very comparable
prices. Especially if you're purchasing the large amounts of food
your pets need.

Good luck!

Good letter! And wow, someone who has more animals than I do (I have
a dog and three cats).

I just stopped at my new Petco for the first time since they rebuilt
last Saturday (they were forced to relocate so a completely
unnecessary home improvement store could take their coveted spot).
What used to be a decent HUGE store is now so tiny, it's not worth
going. The checkout lanes butt right up against product shelving, and
the counters are so small there's no place to put merchandise I'm
buying.

I hope Petsmart takes your suggestion seriously.
