Baggage Policy - or Why I Will Be Flying On Your Airline On My Next Flight

Posted Wed March 26, 2008 1:06 pm, by Brooke A. written to Delta Air Lines

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I recently won a trip to Los Angeles. I can fly any airline that I want, and price is no object (although the rules say that I have to fly coach). I will be flying on your airline because your company is the only company that has not implemented extra charges to have 1 extra bag.

I do not like your charging for snacks policies, but it seems like almost every airline has that now, so there really isn't anyway to escape it. When I am purchasing an airline ticket, I would rather pay $10 up front when I am buying the plane ticket than spend $5 on the plane to buy food. I rarely carry around cash and I don't like starving. The flight I am taking this time is short so it doesn't matter.

Although I am choosing your airline this time, I must add that because a lot of airlines are cheap right now with baggage and food policies (including yours on the food policy), in the future, every time I book my plane tickets, I will be checking the baggage and meal policies of the potential airlines prior to booking any future flights. The airline with the best baggage and meal policy will get my business. I am willing to pay up to $50 more for a ticket on an airline that is better in this regard. If that happens to be you, then I will fly with your company next time as well. If not, I will fly with the competitor.

Seems like you're someone that believe that low cost is good for
people.

I presume that you're telling the major airlines (Delta, American, US
Airways) that these airlines should be for wealthier people who can
afford the extra $50 for "all you can eat." The airlines that charge
for food? For the poor people, I suppose?

She mentions travelling with her kids and needing a crib, etc. I know
when travelling with a young one, the crib, car seat, etc all add up
very fast.

But now I'm thinking, geez, it's just two days, leave the kid with
someone you trust and enjoy two days off! ;)

that you just want to brag about the trip you won.

Seriously, are you done yet? This is getting really old, really fast!

Excuse me, I would rather pay less for the ticket and have the option
to buy their food.

Get some cash before your flight too if you are that hungry. Why if
price is no object, as you put it, are you complaining about the
price?!?!?!?!

Good Day

It isn't a compliment. It isn't a complaint. It seems like a threat
more than anything else.

This is what the airlines face very single day. Competition.

You are not the average flyer. Personally, I would prefer to save $5
if the way to do it is stuff $5 or $10 in my pocket before boarding.
A lot of people don't even want to buy food on a plane, prepurchased
or not.

As far as extra bags, I never have any. I would think the average
flyer doesn't as well.

So, you and Delta can go your separate ways, and if you happen to
choose them in the future, so be it. Oh yeah, that's what you said in
your letter.

You've now written to at least 3 airlines with this complaint.

Most of us would NOT pay to pay $50 extra to bring on extra bags (I
never have more than 1 bag and if I do, it would be reasonable for me
to pay) or to eat snacks that can be had on the ground for $1.

Why don't you do this: when you fly, get $50 in cash and put it in
your pocket. That's money you're willing to spend, anyway. Then, use
that cash to buy food, extra baggage, or whatever. I'll bet, in the
end, you'll come back with almost all of it.

Brooke, you hurt your argument by saying that someone else was paying.
When someone else is paying, of course you'd be willing to pay an
extra $50. But when YOU have to pay, the money matters. If not to
you, then to the rest of us.

Tell you what: send ME the $50 each time you fly and I'll arrange for
you to get a free bag of chips and I'll pay your extra baggage fee.

Sound good?
