overcharged

Posted Sun April 13, 2008 11:04 pm, by wayne j. written to Subway (Sandwich Shops)

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I went to a subway near my house and ordered a footlong sandwich with double meat. The employee did not put double meat on my sandwich and my son pointed this fact out to me. I told my son that the guy probably did not hear me ask for double meat, but when i paid for my sandwich I was charged for double meat. I paid the double meat price as I did not want to cause a scene. Later, I sent a complaint letter to subway. I thought they would send me a coupon for a free footlong or two, but they sent me a coupon for a free six inch sub. This was a couple of weeks ago and I was going to let it pass when I came across this web site. I was mad about being over charged, but I was insulted with the resolution. I did not use the coupon for a six inch sub, I threw it away.

They do not have to do anything. I will not ever eat at that location ever again. Unfortunately for me, I enjoy their sandwiches and will continue to eat them. I make sure to eat at 1 of 2 other stores in my area which do a spectacular job making my sandwiches.

What really blows me away is that this is a simple mistake on the part
of a store. The customer, Wayne J., claims that he was overcharged
when he noticed that it was wrong.

So, what does he do? He leaves. Doesn't say anything.

Does the store know they made the mistake? NO. Wayne doesn't even
offer them the opportunity to fix the problem. He just leaves.

Now, he's claiming it's a bad store. And, others here have agreed
with him that it's a bad store.

Please, tell me ... what did this store do besides make a simple
mistake for which they were not given the opportunity to even correct
even though Wayne knew about it at the time?

"I paid the double meat price as I did not want to cause a scene." It
was your money and your decision to let them steal from you. You wrote
to them after the fact and expect to be rewarded with free footlongs.

Sorry but that was a gratuitous coupon they sent you...probably the
same thing they send anyone who corresponds with them.

The time to speak up is the time you receive the service/food!

You really thought they should have sent you a coupon for a free
footlong or two? Because you did not get double meat? How do you
figure that is appropriate compensation? Extra meat at our subway is
99cents.
Wayne you should probaly eat foods that grow bones and fortify with
calcium because you obviously don't have a spine! How do you walk?
You are so lying about throwing away a coupon for a free 6" sub too.
Who would do that?!
You watched them make your sub right?! Why did you not say something
to the "Submaker"?! Usually they ask before putting on lettuce and
trimmings what you want...THIS would be the time you say excuse me is
that "Double Meat"? I always watch them...I would expecially watch to
see I got the Double Meat, as I believe most people would. If you
just didn't say anything why did you not tell the cashier?!
Nothing in your letter is believable.

How is asking, "Was double meat put on the sandwich" causing a scene?

Subway tried fixing the situation by sending you a coupon for a free
six inch. I think this would more than cover the price difference
between the double meat and not having double meat on the sandwich.

For example you ordered a 6" sub and the charged you for a 12". The
difference between most of their sandwiches is $2.50. If they sent you
a coupon for a free six inch this would have covered the overcharge.

I could not find how much Subway charges for double the meet on a
footlong but I think it is $3.00. Most six inch subs are more than
$3.00

You know maybe she really did get double meat and didn't know it.
Perhaps this store has reduced the amount of meat it puts on a
sandwich.

The official Subway web site says that footlongs are 5 dollars on
special That is what we have going on around my city. Perhaps they
just were putting less meat on the sandwiches during the special.

The reason I say this is because many companies are downsizing what
you get for your money.

Example: I know the large pizzas are really what I use to get as
mediums at my local national pizza shop.

A lot of companies are putting less product in their packaging at
grocery stores. Many times with subtle changes, or none at all other
than dropping the ounces down on the label. This way the consumer
hardly notices. They keep the price the same...but then they really
don't because they give you less for the old price.

Ice cream use to be pretty much standard 1/2 gallon containers. Ever
notice a lot of them are less than that size now? They look the same
at a glance.

Anyway just throwing that out as a possiblity. I have not been in a
Subway in a while...but think I might be dropping in to grab a 5
dollar footlong myself soon.

I think I would of been happy with the 6 inch free coupon especially
since this customer didn't speak up at the time of the alleged
overcharge.

I can understand your not wanting to create a scene. I, personally,
would have spoken up, but that's just me.

It sounds to me like you handled the situation pretty well ~ no
wailing or gnashing of teeth but you didn't like their resolution,
which was to throw a coupon at you.

I am glad you're not writing off the whole chain because of one lousy
store. That's what consumers should do: take a position with their
wallets. Continue to patronize good establishments and write off the
poor ones. If people continue to that, then the good ones will thrive
and the bad will just fade away.

Isn't the price of a six inch MORE than the price of adding double
meat? I am pretty sure it is in my SUbway near me.

Why do you want a "free footlong or two" when all you are out is a
couple bucks? What they sent more than compensated you financially.

Why did you pay the double meat price? You said you "didnt want to
make a scene". How is saying, "Excuse me, I was charged for double
meat but did not receive it" a scene?

I just dont get why you are insulted at being offered something of
MORE value than what you are out. And I REALLY dont get why you jsut
didnt speak up in the first place. Your sone must also be confused as
to why you didnt handle it when he pouinted it out.

This complaint is a non-issue. You sent a letter and they responded.
Why complain again? Oh, that's right, you didn't get enough freebies
the first time.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not teach your child to avoid addressing
these sort of things. He will do much better in life if he learns to
speak up.

I am sure you can teach him to do so with kindness and respect rather
than avoid issues, especailly those as small as this.

I remember my own parents doing similar in teaching us to accept what
is given, eat what is on your plate with no complaining and speak only
when spoken too. Only works for the parents though!
