You all are in the dark. This message may be influenced by Catholic rage, but look beyond. Bill Mayer is simply a dirt bag who beleives his party can do no ill. I have watched the show, he has been shown up constantly by republican pundits. He attacks Christians but never Judiasm, and if you say he does your only lying to yourself on the matter. He attacks Catholism EXPONENTIONALLY compared to other organozed religions. As far as free speech of course he shoul not be muted, but such a blatant hypocrite is disgusting. If you watch his show and tell me half the stuff hes saying about Obama being attacked does not parrallel his vicous attacks on Bush and Palin then I am at a loss of words.(Not a Palin fan, but come on hes attacks are down right malicious,)

My name is Romero Rodriguez, I live in Tampa Fl and have been a so called catholic most of my life, in all about 58 years. Anybody who believes that little children, boys mostly who have been abused by our so called priests and believes Bill Maher should be firedd should have his head examined. The catholic church can tell you not to eat meat on friday cause it's a sin, but not if you contribute to their bullshit. The Pope eats steak seven days a week if he desires and has no pity on those who donate to the church and can't afford it. Motto is stareve your children , but give to the church. GOOD WORK BILL KEEP IT UP.

How about you just change the channel? Have you ever really watched his show, or are you just complaining about what some watchdog group told you to complain about? I can't stand Sean Hannity, but do I scream for his firing? No, I simply don't watch him. Hmm...novel concept huh?

There's this thing called Freedom of Speech. ..The same law that lets you put your comments and beliefs on here. Look into it.
Also, Maher is what, one of 3738327282989822 people who's made a comment like that?

Do you have a better way of describing the Pope??? You can't deny these things happened in the church that he is the leader of.....I'm not saying it's his fault but some of the responsibility certainly falls on him. I need to get me a copy of that South Park episode. lol

This letter writer is obviously:
a) a nutjob
and
b) a far-right conservative
Hey letter writer - it's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH. You know, it's the first amendment to the Constituion in the Bill of Rights?
If you can't handle it:
a) move to a more repressive nation, like Saudi Arabia, Iran or China
or
b) turn off the program and don't watch it!

Just because you can't deal with reality doesn't give you the right to insist that someone be fired?!
What part of (1) moving child abusers around to different parishes/diocese, (2) covering up their behavior, and (3) not reporting them to the authorities doesn't qualify as promoting "organized pedophilia"?
Uh yeah...all the multi-million dollar legal judgments against the Catholic Church must be completely based on rumors, innuendo and lies...yeah that's it, that's the ticket...all those kids...all those victims...they're all lying....yeah...that's it...

I don't like Bill Maher either but he does have a right to his opinion. That being said, why do people get so bunged up over something they see on tv?you aren't being forced to watch it.If I don't care for something I see on tv I change the channel.Seriously...just change the channel and chill out.

So, the Pope and organized religion is above criticism? Look, I've met Bill Maher. He's not pleasant. However, he has his opinions and if he wishes to express them on his television program he has the right to do so, just as you have the right to express your opinions here on this website. It's called "freedom of speech". If you don't like it, don't watch his show.

All organized religions are cults especially the Catholic Church, who, by the way has a history more bloody than any world war. If you want comments like that to stop, then keep your preists from SCREWING OUR CHILDREN!

Free speech. Period. He's a comedian. Making a joke. That some people found off color and some found funny. You don't have to like it, agree with it or repeat it. If you know the truth and you are at peace with what you believe why does Bill Maher figure into it?

Just so you all know...Bill Maher made a joke about the "petition" to fire him on his show Friday night.
To put a rest to this, to all those who want to fire Bill for what he said (because you don't know how to change the channel when someone says something you disagree with); how about a petition to fire Bill O'Reilly - he ate in a predominately African American restaurant and was surprised at how civilized everyone was (you know not yelling "hey MF, pass the salt")...and that's not offensive!
Just remember, there's something in this country called free speech (and also, there's a way to change the channel when something offends you)

Bill Maher needs to be fired but not for this.He has said so many stupid things I can't believe he's still on.Does anyone remember him saying how brave the 911 attackers were because they were willing to die for what they believed and he called the US cowards for "lobbing missiles from thousands of miles away".People were still roaming the streets of NY looking for their loved ones that were no doubt vaporiaed in the towers
As for Catholicism,no where does it say for a man not to marry. It says just the opposite but because their church has ordered that priests don't marry they become consumed with desires that in essence turn into perversions, men are still men.
The worship Mary as a co-redemptress with Chris tand the Bible say that although she was blessed among women she was just a woman full os sin like the rest of us.Mary even speaks of her need for a Savior in Luke.
One part of their translation says that Jesus was an only child but a few pages over it says that he had brothers that were also conceived of the Spirit, then what makes him so special?
They claim Mary was also conceived in "Immaculate Conception" and that is nowhere to be found.
The Catholic church is famous for slaughtering those that take a stand against their false doctrine, that is not my opinion it's history so for those that get offened please research it as I have and you will see for yourself.
They violate all commandmennt beggining with "Make no graven images of anything in heaven nor on the earth" but they worship statues and can't seem to function without them.
You are to confess to Christ alone not to a man as all men a sinners but that is based on money and every man has his price.
I come from generation after generation of Boston Irish Catholics and began to realize something was terribly wrong so I studied religions of the world.
It is a cult in every sense of the word and if anyone thinks for a second that God winks at the molestation of children, there will be "hell to pay" Christ says himself "woe to him that offendeth a little one"
Everything of Catholicism comes from the false idol worship of Babylon. The Madonna and child they think is Mary and Jesus is the exact replica of Semiramis and her son Nimrod who were violent pagans. The wafer they use in Communion is the moon god wafer of Egypt,it even has "IHS" on it which stand for the three moon gods of Egypt.Isis,Horus and Seb"
Before you attack me,please see for yourself, there are dozens of history books at the library that will confirm all of this.
Because they teach that a sinful man can forgive you and they will pay these priests lots of money, they Mafia has always clinged to Catholicism.Who else is going to tell you it's okay to rape, infest our country with drugs and prostituion for your personal gain and even murder?(Hmm,could it be satan?)God will forgive anything but with that comes repentance which means to be sorry and don't do it again.
You don't have to believe like I do but this religion(and witchcraft is a religion so don't let that term fool you) but these different sects claim to be based on the Bible and so if it contradicts that, it cannot be okay.
Over the centuries people were killed for pointing out these gross discrepancies so don't kill the messenger please! and I was'nt starting a big "religious discussion" the thread was already here I'm just pointing out the facts according to history. "it is what it is"
My Catholic family is shocked that I have pointed this out to them and just like the rest of the world, they argue even though they do not know the truth and won't pick up a history book to inform themselves. They believe that if they don't like what they hear they can refuse to believe it and that makes it not true.
It intersting to note what God says about a man that calls himself God ie. the Pope.Has'nt it occured to anyone that the "god' of the Catholic church is Crippled with arthritis and other physical ailments as the ones before him? nd they continue to die needing a replacement? The real "GOD" cannot die!!!!

Let's see... for literally DECADES, the Catholic Church knew about rampant pedophilia committed by its priests. And for literally DECADES, they not only did not stop the abuses, they effectively encouraged such abuse by "relocating" the priests when allegations began to surface.
This sounds to me like "actively promoting organized pedophilia".
Offensive as it may be to you and your religion, it is what it is.
I find it far more disturbing and offensive that you're more concerned with the image of your religion, than you are with the victims of pedophilia. That kind of thinking is at the very root of the problem.

Dear Ms. Naegle,
We are writing to express our outrage with commentator Bill Maher' offensive anti-Catholic rant on this past Friday' Real Time program on HBO. Mr. Maher crossed the line of decency by insulting the Pope, mocking the Catholic religion and Catholics and diminishing the importance of the Catholic faith. In a word, Mr. Maher' commentary was vulgar.
Pope Benedict XVI' historic visit to the United States is meant to build bridges to people of all faiths and spread goodwill in our nation and around the world. He has taken historic steps to bring people of all faiths together, unite them in the cause of common good and break down the barriers that separate us. The Pope has also used this opportunity to acknowledge mistakes of the past and heal the wounds they have caused. We believe individuals guilty of these crimes should be brought to justice, and we appreciate the Pope' apology for these events.
While we do not dispute that Mr. Maher has an absolute right to express his opinions, what good can really be achieved with such offensive and divisive language? It was disgusting to hear Mr. Maher refer to the Pope as an individual who not only operates outside the bounds of the law, but he used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats. Mr. Maher went on to call the Catholic Church a child-abusing religious cult and concluded his diatribe with the statement that' what the Catholic Church is, the Bear Stearns of organized pedophilia.
On behalf of the millions of Catholics in the United States and throughout the world, we are appalled by Mr. Maher' statements and the go-along attitude of his guests, who laughed and clapped through his anti-Catholic tirade. We are also disappointed in HBO for failing to denounce Mr. Maher' ranting and to ignore the fact that his hurtful words offended Catholics in the United States and across the world. Therefore, we call upon HBO to acknowledge the offensive nature of Mr. Maher' remarks and to apologize for playing a role in spreading his anti-Catholic commentary.
Mr. Maher has had a long record of mocking religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. At this time when people of all faiths want to hear a message of peace and of healing, Mr. Maher attempted to cast a dark cloud over the Pope' visit. Regardless, the Catholic religion will continue to foster faith, forgiveness and goodness throughout our world a" and maybe that' a lesson Mr. Maher needs to learn.

Catholics and Muslims are what seems to be walking down the same path. You both get so offended when crap talk occurs about either. Sorry some of the cathlic church officials have been cought red freaking handed screwing little boys and girls. Maybe HBO shouldn't be where you go to get serious news. America is a place where multiple types of people have to live together. Your behavior is unAmerican. Get a life. Wishing bad upon someone else, isn't that a sin? Are you going to go to confession and tell the guy you wished someone to be fired?....while the church daycare "takes care" of your children.

This is an OP who likely believes:
1. Al-Quada is an Iraqi organization.
2. The 9/11 hijackers are Iraqi (all but one, I believe, were Saudi Arabian).
3. The Bush Misadministration really believed there were WMDs in Iraq, as opposed to just lying about it to have an excuse to go to war there (and now hinting at invading Iran).

I'm sure someone posted the actual quote (can't seem to find it), below...
If not, here's what it was: "If you have a few hundred followers and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If you have a billion, they call you 'pope.' "
He also said (in an "apology"): "And the main point I was making was that if the pope, instead of a religious figure, was the CEO of a chain of nationwide day care centers who had thousands of employees who had been caught molesting children and then covering it up, he would have been in jail."
Jesse, if you're going to complain, at least get the quote correct. What you present here is actually NOT what was said. He didn't say it was a cult, he didn't say "promotes," and he didn't say "organized pedophilia."

Not all churches run the same way, of course, but apparently ENOUGH do have a problem with pedophilia that it has gotten a ton of media attention! There is a center for preists to go to near my old neighborhood that was a help center for preists who have gotten caught with "pedophilia tendencies" Which I guess is great that they help people, but it doesnt address the problem because they dont face REAL consequences for their actions that way, like jail. (The only reason i know about the center is that my sister is a therapist... Otherwise you would have no way of finding out.)
Ok tangent aside, You may not like what the man says, but you cant deny him his right to say it, or feel the way he does about it.

have you ever insulted anyone?
we all have.
so you want bill fired, you want to destroy his way of life for insulting someone. That sounds so Roman.
crucify the messenger cause his words are insulting your belief.
Stand back and look at this again.
God has no respect of person: so because he insulted You by insulting the pope (who is what exactly) we as an American society, Home of free speech should take this Bill Maher, and publicly flog him, nail him to a tree?
what part of Mr. Maher's comments had no hint of truth?

Here is the full quote for anyone that wants to read it:
During his April 11, 2008 live broadcast, Maher said of the Catholic Church:
In fact, whenever a cult leader sets himself up as God's infallible wingman here on earth, lock away the kids. Which is why I'd like to tip off law enforcement to an even LARGER child-abusing religious cult. Its leader ALSO has a compound, and this guy not only operates outside the bounds of the law, but he used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats! That's right, the Pope is coming to America this week, and ladies: he's single!
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Bill, you can't be saying the Catholic church is no better than this creepy Texas cult. For one thing, altar boys can't even GET pregnant!" But really, what tripped up the little cult on the prairie was that they only abused hundreds of kids, not thousands all over the world. "Cults" get raided; "religions" get parades. How DOES the Catholic church get away with all of their buggery? Volume, volume, volume! If you have a few hundred followers, and you let some of them molest children, they call you a "cult leader." If you have a billion, they call you "Pope." It's like, if you can't pay your mortgage, they call you a "deadbeat," but if you can't pay a million mortgages, you're "Bear Stearns" and we bail you out.
And that's who the Catholic church is. The "Bear Stearns of organized pedophilia." When the current Pope was in his previous Vatican job, as John Paul's Dick Cheney, he wrote a letter instructing every Catholic bishop to keep the sex abuse of minors secret until the statute of limitations ran out. And that's the church's attitude: "We're here, we're queer, get used to it."
Which is fine -- far be it from me to criticize religion. But just remember one thing: if the Pope was, instead of a religious figure, merely the CEO of a nation-wide chain of day care centers, where thousands of employees had been caught molesting kids and then covering it up, he'd be arrested faster than you can say, "Who wants to touch Mr. Wiggle?"

How come it's always the most religious people who seem to be the least tolerant of people who aren't? Ever hear of freedom of speech and freedom FROM religion? Cancel your own cable service and watch nothing but EWTN.

You know, jabbing yourself in the arm with a knife hurts. If you start doing it, you should stop.
Just like, if you don't like what is on TV, you can stop and change the channel.

What are you watching Bill Maher for in the first place? Use your remote, there's better shows on Pay Per View, believe me, you'll forget Bill Maher ever existed!

As someone who is religious, I am going to say this; every religion is a cult. You can argue all you want, but that's what it is.

Do you really want to live in a country where someone can be fired for saying something that you don't agree with, that is his opinion? Scary thought to me.

Adding to what I said earlier....
I also find it hilarious that with all the sex and adult-oriented programming aired on HBO, you choose to attack and seek the removal of someone who you probably think is an idiot. Just ignore the guy and dont watch his show.
P.S. Real Sex 274 is on at 11 pm tonight, right after Taxicab confrssions.
(sigh)

Let's talk about this...
I am not a Catholic and every few days I have some people from the local church come over to try to get me to convert. They get me books on how things are bad in other religions and all that stuff.
I listen to them and politely decline. I am always surprised that they never seem to talk about the problems that their own religion faces (pedophiles, etc, irrespective of the number).
One when I asked about that, the person said "no comment".
Amazing is it not!
Bottom line is we need to show respect for all religions and faiths. Unfortunately that does not happen.

Well, I'm a Catholic and I say that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Yeah, it bothers me when someone says that about my religion and I'm tired of dealing with stereotypes and being insulted by other Christians because of my faith.
The amount of pedophiles who happen to be priests is rather low, though that doesn't make it any less acceptable. This has been a problem for as long as priests have been restricted from marrying and finally the Church is owning up to its past. But I'm just tired of people villifying the entire Church on the actions of a few. We still have a long way to go, though, in paying for our mistakes.
I personally think that priests should be allowed to marry. Then we would have more priests and I think the overall "mood" of the Church would lighten. I think people don't like us because we are so big. Up until a few weeks ago, we were the largest body of organized religion. Now, it's Islam that is the largest.
I do agree with many of his views, but when it comes to his hate of organized religion, I really think he pushes the boundaries. It's one thing to be critical...he just seems to promote overall hate. Whenever he starts into religion, I just change the channel.

If you're a regular on this site you are aware that I am a Christian person. That being said I hate when people make comments like this because it puts a bad light on all religious people; making us appear fanatical. If you do not agree with Mr. Maher's opinion there is a simple fix. Turn the channel! This is America and he has the right to express his opinion, as do you, but what you do not have is the right to silence someone because they do not believe as you do. God gives all of us a choice, we do not have to follow him, that's what makes Christianity (or any other denomination for that matter) great. Freedom to choose.
God Bless
Queen

If you are so concerned about Mr. Maher's remarks you should cancel your HBO subscription. His show is on paid TV. There are no sponsors, except the viewers. If enough viewers cancel, HBO would likely drop his show.
I do have a man-crush on Bill Maher though. His views on many things such as religion, healthcare, and foreign policy are very refreshing compared to the out-of-touch politicians and political commentators on tv today. Im going to go out on a limb and say you have never actually watched his show. You are most likely relaying some talking points you read from whatever right-wing christian website you love.
His statement though is a bit of an exaggeration. I wouldnt say the church promotes pedophillia, but they certainly have not done much to stop or prevent it from going on.

So do you want to ban everyone from expressing an opinion, or just those opinions that don't agree with yours?
It is ok for you to write a letter on here with your opinion, but it is not ok for Bill Maher to give his opinion?
How does that not make you a hypocrite?

While we're at it, let's fire Bill O'Reilly, Chris Matthews, Nancy Grace, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, the anchors on the Weather Channel, and any one else who has an opinion we don't like. Then T.V. can be nice, safe, and boring and everyone can sit around and watch Everybody Loves Raymond reruns.
Or, even easier, we can just turn the program off and vow never to watch it again.

My mom is Catholic, but even she admits there are things wrong with the Church. It really hurt her when it came out that her priest had once covered up the rape of a young woman committed by one of the younger priests.
I don't like organized religion, I'll be honest, so I have no problems with Maher's remarks about the Church. In fact, I like Maher, though I don't always agree with him.
