Petco Should Cater to Every Animal

Write a Letter to this Company
Whenever any of my cats, dogs, frogs or fish need something, I shop at Petco. I like the prices and your selection is normally very diverse. However, this past weekend has changed my mind.
I bought a Hedgehog baby at a breeder on Saturday, and while I had prepared for him, there were still some items I needed to pick up, so I swung by Petco on my way home. I entered the store with the Hedgie in my hand, I couldn't leave him in the car in the South Texas heat.
I first went to get some food - only to find that there was none for hedgehogs. I was slightly annoyed that such a large store would leave out an animal. Then, I searched for some treats, but found none tailored for my pet and since Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and the like are Herbivores and my guy is an Insectivore, it's best that they don't eat the same thing. That left me with Ferrets, but the majority of the ferret treats were meat-based/flavored and Hedgehogs don't eat meat. I would up with a raisin-flavored Ferret treat, which I later out found he won't eat.
After that failure, I tried my luch at some bedding. Hedgies can't have Cedar or Pine bedding because the chemicals in them make them very ill. The breeder told me that Aspen is very popular and that I should use that, since it is safe. I looked and looked, but all of your bedding is Cedar or Pine based. I asked an employee if there was any Aspen in the back, and he told me that he had never heard of Cedar being harmful to anybody and that I should just use that. The International Hedgehog Association and numerous other places have proof that Cedar is bad news to Hedgies.
I was getting pretty fed up by now, so I tried one last time to find something that I needed - litter. Hedgehogs need dust-free, non-clumping litter. Just my luck that I couldn't find it in either the small animal section or the cat section.
I would like for Petco to cater to every animal, not just a select few. I can't understand how you could have a whole aisle on ferrets, another on rabbits another on rats and so on, and yet have not a single thing for Hedgehogs.
I have decided to take my business to Petsmart, since they carry products that are safe for all of my pets. I went there right after I left your store, and they had everything I needed. When I went home, I went to your website to see if there was anything online, and Hedgehog was not even an animal option!
I can understand not carrying Hedgehogs themselves, but that doesn't mean that nobody wants to buy anything for them.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a chain pet store to have supplies for every conceivable animal that someone might want to keep as a pet. While I don't know how many hedgehog owners there are out there, I feel safe in saying that the hedgehog owner population is but a fraction of the dog, cat, hamster, gerbil, bird or fish owner population.
That said, Petco should carry Aspen bedding, as it is recommended for many small animals that Petco does carry, such as hamsters, gerbils, rabbits and ferrets.

What an absurd assertion that Petco should cater to every animal. Are you serious?

I stated in a previous post that I was wrong to make that statement. However, I was just miffed that they didn't even carry food for a Hedgehog.
They are really not as rare as some people think. They are as common as Sugar Gliders and Chinchillas, while they may not be mainstream pets like a hamster, they are enough of them that a big chain store like Petco should carry some products for them. After all, they have multiple choices for food for Sugar Gliders and plenty of options on bathing sand/dust for Chinchillas. Would it really hurt to stock the shelves with a box of Hedgie food?

"I would like for Petco to cater to every animal, not just a select few."
That's a silly statement. Petco hardly caters to a mere "select few" and does provide products for a variety of the most common household pets. And really? You want Petco to cater to every animal? That'd be a hell of a big store.
At any rate, I can't imagine acquiring a pet of any kind, let alone a relatively newly domesticated animal who seems to be a little high maintenance in a few areas, without already having the basics ready to go. Perhaps if you'd gotten prepared beforehand, instead of a complaint letter to a store that didn't do anything wrong, you'd be writing a letter complimenting another pet store for having all the supplies you need.
