Upsetting Situation at Party City

Posted Sat May 17, 2008 12:00 pm, by Christelle P. written to Party City Corporation

Write a Letter to this Company

Today, May 15, 2008 I needed to order balloons for an event held at our school. So I knew I could call Party City to get exactly what I needed (or so I thought).

I called at approximately 2:10 pm and when I finally got through to a person, I told them that I needed one dozen balloons and would it be possible to pick them up at 4:15 today. I was asked to hold. I held for approximately 7 minutes when someone else picked up the phone, I again stated what I needed and was placed on hold. After another 5 minutes I then had a female pick up the phone. I told her what I needed and I was put back on hold (wasn't even told I was being put on hold). Finally she picked up the phone again. I was asked what I wanted (not professional), I told her that I needed one dozen pink and purple balloons. She asked my name and asked for my number. I had my credit card in hand because I know that normally you have to give your credit card to place an order. After she got my phone number she hung up. So obviously I could not give my credit card information and I needed to go back to job so I couldn't call back and wait as long again.

My grade partner went to pick the balloons up, and she stated that she was treated very rudely and was told that because they didn't have the credit card number, they waited till someone came in. Unfortunately due to a time restraint she couldn't wait and shouldn't have to since they were ordered ahead.

I did mention what happened to several people because I think people should be aware when a customer is not treated properly.

I can not even imagine what Party City could do to fix this problem. I feel that the store needs to become more professional and to treat others the way a customer should be treated.

If this store doesn't normally take phone orders, all they had to do
was say so. Instead they were so disorganized that nobody knew what
to do. I have a really hard time believing that a party store doesn't
receive phone calls like the OP's on a regular basis. If they aren't
equipped to do this, or if they are unable to take CC over the phone
and need to wait for someone to arrive, they needed to make that clear
to the OP. Whatever the case, I think the store could certainly have
handled this situation better.

I think we all can agree on one thing: The employees at that store
need training in how to treat customers, how to process phone-in
orders, and how not to lose customers!

I can agree with that by Marty5223 Sun May 18, 2008 @ 2:28 PM

This was absolutely handled incorrectly. If they needed a CC number
they should have either asked you while they still had you on the
phone or called you back since they had your number. Instead, they
just assume that whomever picks them up will be able to wait
indefinitely for them.

In this case I would definitely let your feet do the talking and would
not set foot in there again. Unfortunately unless more people demand
better service things won't get any better.

It's apparent they aren't very good at completing phone orders. Maybe
too many people handling the phone lines at one time and once they put
you on hold they can't backtrack to their original customer. After the
first few hang ups, I think I'd have given up on them.

How frustrating! I don't understand their inability to process this
transaction: Don't they do this sort of thing ALL THE TIME? Like...
at least several times a week?

I hope your letter is a wake-up call somewhere. Please let us know if
you hear back from them.

So you called the day before an "event held at (your) school". This
happens to be prom season. What if everything was already spoken
for?

I know that in my area, there's a shortage of helium. If it's the
same in your vicinity, what should Party City do?

Did you send your actual plastic CC with your friend? Were you
available for confirmation?

I don't think a shortage of materials was the problem by ♪♪Venice♪♪ Sat May 17, 2008 @ 1:36 AM
