Best Buy Acted with Smugness and Disregard

Posted Fri May 23, 2008 12:00 pm, by david d. written to Best Buy

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

In approximately June of 2005, one of your employees called me a derogatory name and admitted it to the store manager. Management tried to justify her behavior because I refused to show her my receipt, even though my hands were full carrying audio equipment weighing over 75 lbs and I was literally 5 feet away from her when I made the purchase.

She asked for my receipt and I politely declined because anyone with minimal intelligence would have realized it was physically impossible. At which time she followed me into the parking lot and called me the name. I returned to the store, explained the situation to the manager on duty and he attempted to justify her behavior because he said it was store policy to show a receipt.

I explained that regardless of the store policy, my hands were full carry heavy equipment. At this point, he became agitated and continued to try and portray it like it was my fault rather then your employees' lack of respect, knowledge and training.I should also point out that I am not required by law to show a receipt and the law supersedes store policy.

I felt at the time and still do that although Best Buy corporate could not have prevented what happened, they could have rectified the situation after the fact. However and for whatever reason the Corporate Office and regional manager decided to act with a general disregard and smugness toward what happened.

As a result of my treatment, I wanted to inform you that in addition to losing me as customer, I have told countless people about what happened and will continue to do so whenever presented with the opportunity.

However, it is now approaching the 3 year anniversary of the incident. Clearly, I am not one to forget what happened or how I was treated but I want to give your company the opportunity to change my opinion and do the right thing. As someone in your ideal demographic and an "early adopter" of technology it probably would be in your best interest to revisit the situation and attempt to rectify it.

The Store location of the incident was:
Westbury NY (Store 454)
1100 Old Country Rd
Westbury, NY 11590-5625

Have you ever noticed that the customer is always a perfect angel and
then here comes the big bad awful employees.I would bet all my money
on the customer calling the first name.

I dont understand you people...why should I forgive this company when
they have never issued an apology withour a caveat. All they had to
do was say "hey our employee did something wrong and we are sorry."

I send them an annual reminder to give them an opportunity to get my
business back and will continue to do so. Is that really so wrong?

the hostility some of replied with is mindboggling

Oh David...why not keep all these letters together in one pile, keep
thinking of other issues that may need to be dealt with on a business
level and bind them up...you just may have a best seller.
But then, you will probably complain if the book doesn't sell...it
will be everyone's fault but your own of course.

finally hit me!

This story seems so one-sided,and many details are left out. I am 90%
sure you called her names first because she asked to check your
reciept. No one would just call you names out of the blue unless there
was some snide remark or rude comment made.At least she admitted to
it. You sound frustrated in your letter that you had to show a reciept
in the first place, so I am pretty sure you went off on her. In that
case, you deserved to get rude treatment.

Instead of carrying 75 lbs. of product (and possibly injuring
yourself) why in the world did you not get a shopping cart, or at
payment request a carry-out. Common sense to me.

Sir, there are more important things in life than how you were treated
at Best Buy. Really, there are. And if this is the worse thing that
has ever happened to you - long enough to hold a 3 year grudge - then
you, dear sir, have lead a charmed life.

good for you for standing ur ground. they never apologized or
attempted to rectify the situation. let it be a lesson to treat people
with respect, remeber the golden rule. in return u have examplified
boycotting them which is exactly what i wouldve done if i were treated
the same way.

Geezel! That was 3 years ago! Why didn't you complain then? Forget all
about it. Go to your local theater and see the new Indiana Jones
movie. You'll like it.

Oh my goodness, it has been 3 years! Give it up! Usually when one
purchases that large of an item or items, you have it in a basket or
you pull your vehicle to the service entrance where a best buy
employee will help load it in. I purchased a heavy item, about 80lbs
and was told to just pull around to the side (service entrance) and
someone would have my item and load it in. I showed my receipt as I
was leaving the store and drove to the service entrance for the
purchase. Again, the guy loading it up, asked for a receipt-no big
deal. I'm sure best buy has this policy in effect because of alot of
theft. You really should just move on. Have a great day!

So David, how's that 3-year ban on Best Buy working out for ya? Seems
to be working out pretty well for Best Buy. Not to mention the
"countless people" you've told this story to.

You may have actually broken a record for the longest gimme-grab ever
on this site. I'll put your letter in the same file as the ones from
Manda.

Anyone with minimal intelligence would understand that when leaving a
store with a bulky package, a store employee would challenge them to
show proof of purchase. You know, with shoplifting and all. I would
seem to me that is the alert employee's job.

How hard is it to put the package down, and give the employee the
benefit of the doubt that maybe during purchase they were looking the
other way instead of at one's self-important derriere?

This letter was hilarious. Approximately a year, four months and
three weeks ago I read one that almost as funny.

"and will continue to do so whenever presented with the opportunity"

Well I think there is something in the law about extortion.
I also love the whole concept that just because you tell someone Best
Buy asked for a receiot as you left, you think they are going to avoid
Best Buy. People make up their own mind.
You haven't been a Best Buy customer for 3 years and they are still in
business. Evidently they don't need your money. I hope they ban you
from all Best Buy stores because that is their right.

I'm trying to be more pro-consumer, really I am. But this letter has
made me lose all motivation.

Dude, it was three years ago. I realize you were pissed off at the
time, and maybe you had the right to be. Maybe Best Buy didn't handle
the situation properly. And perhaps your decision to never darken the
doorstep of Best Buy again was a good one.

But it's now springtime in 2008. It's also Memorial Day weekend. Go
for a nice walk. Crash a barbeque and have a hotdog. Drink a seasonal
summer microbrew. Watch the "That 70's Show" marathon on FX.

Do whatever you need to do to have a great holiday. But please, MOVE
ON.

Note to self: If ever attempting to shoplift, refuse to show receipt
at door and claim you can't because your hands are "full."

"I should also point out that I am not required by law to show a
receipt and the law supersedes store policy."

You obviously have no legal experience, because this statement is
ridiculous and false. Just because there is no law saying you MUST
produce a receipt doesn't mean a store can't require it. And there
certainly isn't a law prohibiting stores from requiring shoppers to
produce them on demand.

Quite honestly, you had a valid complaint, but the near-histrionics
detract so much from that complaint, nevermind that you're still
dwelling on this THREE YEARS LATER.

Are you like this with everything that goes wrong in your life?

I'm curious what "countless people" have said about the fact that
you're upset that you were asked to show your receipt 3 years ago,
refused and are still griping about it. So what if your hands were
full - - would it have killed you to put something down and comply
with a simple request? And no - - it's not in BB's "best interest to
revisit the situation and attempt to rectify it" as it's clear they
don't care if you remain a customer or not. And I'll bet that you've
been back and made additional purchases in the past 3 years.

So, after you went back into the store to report the employee for
doing her job, did you show the manager the receipt? You did have one,
didn't you? Can you provide your receipt now so Best Buy has some
evidence that this actually took place, (approximately) three years
ago? Not saying it will help your gimmee grab, but you never know.

I have to thank David for helping me make a decision. I have a $50
gift card coming to me, and just needed to name the retailer. I will
select a Best Buy gift card. Thanks for making my decision easy. I
happen to like retailers that try to keep costs low by controlling
theft.

1. You should have put the items down, or asked her to assist you, so
you could show your receipt.

2. She never should have called you a name, but you shouldn't have
ignored her request, then her demand for your receipt.

You're both guilty. Grow up.

decided to play power game with her, and she got frustrated. Just
because she was 5 feet from you doesn't mean you had her undivided
attention.
It may well be that legally you do not have to show your receipt, but
they can request proof of purchase and detain you until you provide
it. From the tone of your letter, I don't know how "polite" you would
have been.
How did you want them to rectify this? Tell loss prevention that to
just let customers walk out with merchandise if they don't want to
show a receipt?
