Horrible Disappointment at Krispy Kreme

Posted Sat July 12, 2008 12:00 pm, by Rochelle H. written to Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation

This letter is featured on ShopperCast

On Friday night, July 11th at 10:19 PM, I visited Krispy Kreme at 1051 East 120th Ave. Thornton, CO to get donuts for tomorrow morning's breakfast. Even though I live outside of Boulder, and it is a 10.6 mile drive one way to your store, having your wonderful donuts for breakfast is worth the trip!

I had no concern with coming to your store at this time, as I know from past experience that even though your inside dining may close early, the drive-thru is open late. When I arrived at your store tonight, the restaurant portion was very dark, but the drive-in board was illuminated so I thought everything was still good. However, after I waited for several minutes and drove around to the window, I realized that no one was there to serve me donuts. I drove back to the drive thru sign and then noticed a small piece of paper taped to it stating that store hours only went until 10 PM!

There were 4 cars in the lot. I don't know what the people were doing in the Krispy Kreme store, but they were obviously not there to sell donuts to me.

Donuts are such a popular late night food, I can't imagine that it is a wise business to close at 10 PM, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. I have to imagine that much business is lost, because everyone knows that policemen, paramedics, and barflies enjoy the late night donut. Krispy Kreme's business problems in Colorado have been well-publicized, and I think it should be considered that your erratic, poorly -thought-out business hours have contributed to Krispy Kreme's financial insolvency.

Since I drove way out of my way to come to your store, which is the only Krispy Kreme in the area, I would like to receive donuts in an amount sufficient to reimburse me for my round trip to your store tonight, and for the future trip to pick up the reimbursement donuts as follows:

Trip = 21.2 miles round trip Premium Gas =$4.15/gallon Car gets 18 MPG city

21.2/18 = 1.18 gallons used X $4.15/gallon = $4.89

$4.89 X 2 = $9.78 retail value of donuts desired as compensation for tonight's trip and future trip.

I am very disappointed in you, Krispy Kreme, and don't believe that I will return to your store unless this situation is corrected.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Your loyal customer,

R.

This is an old letter, but I wanted to offer a belated postscript.
The Krispy Kreme in question has now gone to having a 24 hour drive
through service! No more problems with them being closed!

Your not serious, right? I mean give me a break. Something tells me
that you in particular should not be eating donuts. Sorry, but either
you have some serious overeating issues to be trekking across the city
at night for a freaking donut...or you are just another loser trying
to make a buck.

Hey, last week, on sunday night I wanted to shop for a new suit at
Robinsons-May for a job interview tuesday. Oh...but I messed around
all day, and when I got there the store was closed!!!! I had to wear
an 'old' suit!!! And the gas!!!dont get me going!!!

CAN YOU HELP ME OUT????

Hardly the worst example of "Send me stuff I don't deserve!" I've
seen, but still absolutely ridiculous.

I'm all for supporting the consumer over the big guy, but what really
happened here was- you ASSUMED they would be open late because other
KK branches are open late.

The entire paragraph about how it would be smart for them to stay open
later is completely irrelevant. They set their hours. You didn't
check.

And your math "logic" is wrong, too. You asked for gas money for two
trips. Even if they did compensate you, and I'm sure they laughed at
you while they sent you coupons, why should they pay gas for two
trips? Only one trip was fruitless. Unless you show up without
knowing if they would be open again. Oh, and if you live 10.6 miles
out of town, shouldn't you have used the highway mileage?

You made an assumption. You lost. Totally your fault. And I think
you know it. Nice job getting free donuts, though.

The KK in my area was closed down and all we have is DD. I didn't go
to KK when they were here cause there donuts are very fattening and
tastes to sweet for me. Although DD aren't much better fattening wise,
but they tastes better. The fat content in donuts are not good for
you and eating them all the time is even worse. I know a few people
that has put on about 10-15 pounds over the past 6 months to a year
that eat there a lot. I know that DD isn't the only reason but it
started when they started eating there. Okay, time for me to quit
rambling.

Congrats, Rochelle.
I'll be going to my local Krispy Kreme about midnight tonight. They
may or may not be closed by then (I have no idea what their hours
are), but I feel much better in knowing that one way or another, I'll
get my donuts.
And totally free.

And I'll have to take a moment and wonder what my PF collegues were
thinking when they sided with her on this.

by rochel Posted Wed July 16, 2008 @ 8:10 PM

When I came home from work today, there was a letter to me in the mail
box from Krispy Kreme doughnuts! I was so interested to see whether
they would offer me a verbal butt-whooping and no donuts, as the
majority opinion here at PlanetFeedback would desire, or if it would
be something better than that.

They sent me a very nice handwritten letter apologizing for my
inconvenience and a coupon for a free dozen donuts! The manager who
wrote the letter also indicated that she would send the feedback
regarding their hours to their corporate office. Do I expect any
changes from this? Probably not, perhaps their current hours are due
to economic conditions. I know also that Krispy Kreme has struggled as
a company in Colorado, so I am actually grateful that there is one
here at all -- despite the argument offered here that they aren't real
donuts at all.

The manager did note in the letter the store hours "as for right now",
which indicates to me that there could be future changes ahead. So for
any future trips which fall at unusual times, probably anything
outside of 9-5, I will call first.

Thanks for all of your comments! It was fun for me to read them. :)

Thornton, CO 80233
Phone: 720-977-8555

Call next time before you drive somewhere.

I know how people get when they start craving the Krispy Creme. My
friend said he use to drive 50 miles one way to get the donuts.

He would nearly wreck if the Red Hot Sign was on.

I have seen him trembling for donunts.

When the local store closed in the parking lot of the retail store I
use to work out our business bombed.

The donuts drove our business.

looking online I found an older article about how poorly these
franchise stores are doing in the area.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4191/is_20060126/ai_n16040827

It mentions others stores including the one you mention in your
complaint were subject to future cuts.

My guess is you might end up without a store at all.

by StoicGrrl Posted Tue July 15, 2008 @ 3:31 PM

The people in the Krispy Kreme were not there to sell you donuts.
They were there to clean up the store, possibly do paperwork, and all
the other hundred things that employees must do to close up a store.

It seems from your letter that there was a sign regarding store hours,
but also that it wasn't a great sign. Do you think what was upsetting
wasn't so much the hours but the fact that the hours had clearly
changed to a less convenient time for you? I understand that it can
be frustrating to drive somewhere only to find that they have
decreased their hours, but it does happen.

I think the situation you describe is unfortunate and no doubt very
annoying, but I just don't think you're owed anything beyond possibly
a reply detailing the new hours.

I have a couple of words for you, Phone First. This way you could have

mistake.

Look on the bright side, next time you get a craving for KK, you will
know that location closes at 10pm.

The store closes at 10pm, and you want them to pay for your gas
because you went to the store after closing time??? Are you
serious???

And since when are doughnuts "a popular late night food"??? I've
never heard this before. Ever. Generally people eat them at
breakfast, but maybe someone with large amounts of trans fat corsing
through their veins might want to eat doughnuts all hours of the day
and night.

There can never, NEVER be a complaint about Krispy Kreme - they are
the food of the Gods!

But in all seriousness, your failure to note the closing time is
neither their fault nor their problem. If you chanced driving the
10.6 mi. trip WITHOUT ascertaining whether anyone would be there,
that's on YOU.

And as for the cars in the lot, if you have EVER worked food service,
you know they are probably closing down teh machines and prepping for
the next day - it has nothing to do with selling you donuts.

Oh, & BTW, the definition of a "loyal" customer is NOT someone who
refuses to ever patronize and establishment after ONE bad incident.

Reply
by lmnorman Posted Sun July 13, 2008 @ 11:46 PM

No one owes you anything. What if they, for instance, had a
pipe/water problem they were fixing? If they don't have fully
operational water in the building, it is ILLEGAL for them to sell you
so much as a cup of coffee, period. You got dissappointed, get over
it and stop thinking the world owes you things.

by Sheldonrs Posted Sun July 13, 2008 @ 8:44 PM

Bottom line, it's their store. If they decide to open up between the
hours of 12am and 12:03am, that's upto them.
It's upto you to decide if you want to go there or not. Nobody forced
you to go there and nobody is forcing you to continue going there.
They owe you nothing except to give you good product when and if you
buy from them.

"There were 4 cars in the lot. I don't know what the people were doing
in the Krispy Kreme store, but they were obviously not there to sell
donuts to me." They most likely were closing employees cleaning the
store.

This does sound annoying, however they were closed. Maybe Krispy Kreme
will take your suggestion to heart and extend their hours, however I
doubt it.

Your compensation request is illogical however. Why do you deserve
free donuts because they were closed? It's not their fault that you
went after they were closed.

(720) 977-8555 - I suggest you call it if you have any questions.

I'm not saying they shouldn't call when something goes wrong - if
something legitimately did. But there was a small percentage of
customers who - like the OP - defined "something going wrong" as
something that they simply didn't like. Orders not arriving on a
Saturday morning when they placed the order on a Friday night, when
the shipping timeframe of 3 business days was clearly defined on the
website. Or the donut shop being closed after 10PM when they wanted a
late night snack.

Rochelle H.,

As our economy continues to bob, weave and dip retailers and consumers
alike are going to have to rethink shopping as we used to know it.

Retailers will need to schedule to forecasted demand and when that
errors they too will have to pinch in to meet the needs of the
customers.

The days of the cushy office were over years ago and those that did
not figure that out then will have to now.

These same operators are going to need to take a good hard look at
Hour of Operation. The days of 24 hour operations and staff standing
around to entertain and serve that single guest are falling by the
wayside fast.

The Big Box, major chains are going to have to think outside the box
in many ways. Local Hours of Operation will need to be tested. Again
the day of jumping in the car and shooting over to Company X and on to
Company Y is no longer an option for the retailer nor the customer on
the threshold of $5.00 per gallon gas.

Shopping trips will need to be planned out to maximize resources.

Like the other commentors say...call first but that too will be source
of letters to PFB as staffing levels will not allow the old "answer by
the third ring mandate".

A far as your request for compensation...it ain't gonna happen.

BillR.

I think what amuses me most about this letter is that the time the OP
spent doing her calculations about time times gas times donuts to
dictate to Krispy Kreme how many donuts it will take to win back her
"loyalty" was probably ten times longer than it would have taken to
click a few times on their website to find out the hours of operation

So let me get this straight...If you feel like going to a place to
shop and it is closed, the store owes you compensation?
You are not a loyal customer, you are a customer. Your disloyalty
shows in your freebie grab, and the fact that you say you won't
return. Loyal customers do not try to bribe stores with their
patronage.
All stores close. Just because you want to shop after closing doesn't
mean they need to pay you compensation. I hope Krispy Kreme bans you

Horrible disappointment? Puh-lease!! They're donuts, for God's

If that wasn't bad enough, then you have the NERVE to request payment
for fuel wasted on your trip that night, and for the next time you go
there to get "reimbursement" donuts!! Reimbursement? FOR WHAT?!??!

"I am very disappointed in you, Krispy Kreme, and don't believe that I
will return to your store unless this situation is corrected."

Followed by "Your Loyal Customer". Oh some loyalty - threatening to
not return to the store unless they pay for your gas, twice, because
of an error in judgment on your part!

I hope Krispy Kreme pays you gas for 21.2 miles to travel in the
OPPOSITE direction.

If you are willing to spend $5 in gas to get your morning donut, I
doubt this disappointed you very much.

You deserve what you got at Krispy Kreme. Nothing.

War is horrible. Children dying of AIDS is horrible.

There is nothing remotely horrible about you assuming the place would
be open at that hour.

Theatrics aside, they owe you nothing.

All this wailing and gnashing of teeth over something that isn't even
real doughnut.

That is my final ruling.

I can really say I have never bought donuts at 10pm at night. I can't
even remember the last time I have had one, they are high in fat and
calories and not good for you. I guess I am stuck in a rut with my
Cheerios, oh well.

Perhaps maybe you should have called before you made your trek out to
get donuts. There is no compensation for your mistake.

Written less than two hours after the incident, perhaps the OP wasn't
thinking clearly.

The first paragraph negates the demand based on time and gas lost.
The OP chooses to drive that far. The OP chooses to go out for donuts
which are hardly a necessity. I do not expect Wal*Mart to compensate
me if they are out of an item. I do not expect McDonald's to
compensate me if they run out of ingredients for a sandwich.

Believe it or not, cars in the parking lot do not necessarily mean the
business has to be open. After the store closes, it must be cleaned
for the next day. Most restaurant employees working at close must
remain afterwards to sweep/mop the floor, clean the machines, wipe
down tables, put ingredients away and so on.

Yet another person who had some freaky upbringing and who doesn't know
how the world works. Ignore her, and she'll be on her way.

Is this a real letter?

How about before going to such a place like Krispy Kreme, you should
maybe try calling them to verify when they are closing or look on
their website? Honestly, the only person to blame for the wasted gas
is yourself.

If it would really benefit them being open late at night, then I think
they would be open late at night.

Your "request" of doughnuts is stretching it and frankly, a bit
laughable. How is this the store's fault? Why do they owe you
anything? They don't even owe you an apology.

Be an informed customer and don't be one that expects everything to be
given to them, spoonfed.

On a side note, I like the occassional doughnut meself. Our local
Krisy Kreme has a big neon board right on the interstate so whenever
there are fresh doughnuts, they light up that sucker and then you
gotta watch out because people dart through three to four lanes trying
to get to the exit to go get fresh doughnuts. LOL

Cops = Donuts...funny.

But seriously, you dont deserve anything. Why is it you feel as
though you should be compenstated for your gas just cause you decided
to drive that far for donuts before checking to make sure of the
closing times. In todays economey businesses are closing earlier to
help keep over head low. So you didnt get your donuts, its NOT the
end of the world.

I only go when "the light" is on. But of course if I set out to drive
that far that late I call ahead of time to make sure that its not a
wasted trip.

Its called MY responsibilty to ensure that the places are OPEN when I
am going instead of expecting that they will be just cause I think
that they should be.

Cops and Donuts... by (What's With this Cheese Thing???) Peanut's Mom Sat July 12, 2008 @ 12:29 PM

for every hour they are not open when you might possibly want to get
some... and the gas that you would have used driving to not get them.
You really want them to reimburse you for gas for driving to pick up
free donuts? I have to become more creative when I am looking for
hand-outs.
