Dude, You Screwed Up and Bought a Dell

I bought a Dell E1405 Inspiron laptop in May of 2006. I previously wrote to complain about the poor quality of the materials used - the finish began wearing off the left mouse button over a year ago. As of last week, the finish was completely gone. I compare this to the durable finish on my IBM Thinkpad, the buttons after 7 years looked and worked like brand new.
A month ago, the left mouse button stopped "clicking". There is no spring or motion at all to it, and the slightest pressure is assumed to be a click. I haven't dropped the computer, spilled beer on it, used it as a doorstop. It hasn't even traveled anywhere.
So, I bought a used palmrest assembly on Ebay. After spending $30 and a few hours of time, I have restored the mouse buttons to their previous function. The previous owner must have used WebTV, because the mouse button shows no wear. I guess I have a year before that starts wearing off.
The quality of this product should be absolutely embarrassing. I saved a few dollars by shopping online, but it was a huge mistake. The first indication was you failed to honor a rebate. Actually, your customer service team failed to ever admit the rebate even *existed*. The Dell website changed the day I ordered, and nobody had any record of what it advertised the following week! After 13 hours on the phone, I was finally able to get a Dell mediation specialist to issue me a credit. So I earned $75/13 = $6 and hour, tax free, to get what I should have received with no effort.
Now, I see the quality of a Dell computer is really bargain basement. I will happily pay twice the price next time to deal with another company. I'll get better quality, and there seems to be no doubt I will get better customer service.
Absolutely nothing. There isn't anything Dell could say or do that will change my opinion of the company. I wouldn't buy a two cent piece of bubblegum that said "Dell" on it.

I have I Dell Dimension 4550 purchased in January 2003 and a Dell Inspiron E1505 purchased in July 2006 and have had absolutely no problems nor complaints with either one. My Dell monitor is starting to get blurry when showing dark colors so I'm replacing it with an LCD. My next computer will be built from components, not because Dell is bad but because I want to save money.

Have you considered buying a wireless USB mouse to use? I purchased a dell laptop last summer and hate the mouse pads on any laptop. I bought myself a wireless keyboard and mouse and use my laptop like a desktop when I am at home.

I've owned (either personally or via a job) many Dell machines in my life. Here's what I've found: the desktop machines work well. The laptops, on the other hand, always have some sort of problem. Always.

I see now that the reference to Dell's old marketing slogan may irritate Dell owners. I didn't intend that.
I was referring to myself; I didn't mean that everyone who's bought a Dell screwed up.
I know *I* screwed up. I can't say how *other* people feel. If you like your computer, love it, more power to you. I was just calling a spade a spade from my own perspective.

I have a Dell XPS 140 laptop. It's about three years old and it's still working pretty good. It has the problem with the left mouse button sort of indented, but it still retains function so I haven't fixed it yet since it's out of warranty now.
The logos fell off where I rest my palms at and you can see the sort of glossy look where I put my hands at from paint wearing off, but I've seen that on tons of other makes, brands, and models.
The only thing that tends to wear out quickly is the powercord/charger/adapter. I squeezed two years out of the battery before I had to replace it with a new one.
All in all, my experience with dell has been good and I even receive good customer service even though I don't have a warranty anymore. It sucks that yours wasn't so great. :( I like Dell--yeah, I've had my problems, but they are all right. We have three computers in the house and they are all dell. One's nearly seven years old and is still going along fine.

I am on my third Dell. This one is about three years old. Never had any real issue, just an annoying language barrier when calling in once to ask about my warranty.
Sorry it hasn't worked out for you.

So if there is nothing Dell can do, why are you writing to them? So they will know some random person who purchased a computer from them two years ago is unhappy? OK. Duly noted. I'm sure they'll all be losing sleep tonight.

WOW 13 hrs on the phone did you have a stop watch?
Or did you estimate the time? Surely you didn't spend 13 hrs on just one call.
