Motel 6 Expects Customers to Stay in Filth!

Write a Letter to this Company
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing you to report an appalling stay my kids and I had at one of your locations; in Mason, Ohio.
When we arrived our church group was VERY tired from driving 6 hours to our destination (this hotel). The room was not clean and had not had the carpet vacuumed as leaves (I assume these are shed in the fall) and potato chips were all over the carpet.
As you can imagine we were all anxious to get in the shower and call it a night. I had my little girl (8) get started in the shower while I unpacked everything for our stay. The shower was extremely filthy, with scum on the shower walls and black mold up on top of the rim of the shower. There were also FOUR (4) little used bars of soap (different varieties) left all over the shower. After her shower she grabbed a towel and screamed "ma-ma, there is poop on my towel", I went to the bathroom to witness what she thought was "poop" and low and behold there it was "nasty feces" smack in the middle of a supposedly clean towel we threw this towel on the floor of the bathroom (very disgusting)!!
I would have given her another towel, but this is the only one we had in our room. I called the desk and he said he would bring us some fresh towels in 30 minutes. I waited 45 minutes and still no towels or shower for my 9 year old son or myself! I called again and the desk said we would have to wait till morning?? I mean come on, morning? We ended up showering and using our own dirty clothes to dry off with.
When we turned the television on we noticed black/brown sticky stuff all over the dresser underneath the television. Once again, Gross!
When trying to fall asleep we could hear nothing but a running (not dripping) bathroom faucet, it was so annoying I had a very hard time falling asleep.
The next day after a very long and trying trip to Kings Island we once again could not wait to get back to our hotel to shower and fall asleep. When walking into our room I noticed only one bed was made and the room had still not been vacuumed, and had two towels and no wash clothes! I had my youngest jump in the shower again and when she's done I hear a familiar scream "ma-ma, there is poop on the towel again. I go into the bathroom and it's the SAME towel that was there the night before, the maid re-folded the towel (that was on the floor behind the toilet) and put it on the shelf to use. I was devastated that my daughter had to be subjected to this filthy, gross up keep of a hotel, let alone touch the towel that was once thrown on the floor for the same reason. I can't imagine the health department allowing such ignorant upkeep on a hotel room, especially with all the infection i.e., aids, hepatitis and other communicable diseases! I was so grossed out that I took a picture of this with my camera phone. When I reported to the office, they took it very nonchalant, as if to say "no big deal"...
The second night I slept in my son's bed with him and his covers smelled like human urine, I am sickened to know that someone could just throw bedding on a bed weather it be clean or dirty. I was also bit on my ankles by some small bug that was in our beds my whole body has been itchy since we have been home. My best friends daughter became ill in her hotel room (the day we left) with pink eye (a very communicable disease)!!
I don't understand how the Ohio Health Department could allow such disgust and atrocious maintenance to a hotel room. This hotel made our little trip terrible, it was a place I will NEVER visit again with my family or church. You people aught to turn the lights on instead of leave them on to witness such grotesque filthiness! I am sure this cannot be good for your business, is this the way all Motel 6's are ran and operated?
I look forward to hearing from you quickly as this is very fresh in my mind and not to be just brushed under the pillow, as my kids and I deserve the respect as to be given an explanation. My husband even told me to go across the street to the Holiday Inn, but this would have been hard to do when the whole youth group was driving only two vehicles and all staying at this motel. WIth the rising price of gas, groceries and everything else - I feel like our "saved for" trip was ruined by having to stay in an eviroment that was fit for a pig!
I would like an explanation as to why Motel 6 is able to expect a customer to stay in such filth!

Why would you let your son stay in a pissy bed? Why would you even stay one night? Two cars to go ACROSS THE STREET is not that difficult, and you could have gotten a refund.

I once had a similer experience at a motel in TN. I didn't stay. I got my deposit back and went to a better place. Why would you subject your children to such a place. Shame on Motel 6! I won't stay there.

I think all motel chains should be shut down. they are dirty and filthy, violate health codes, and often attract drug dealers, prostitutes, and sex offenders!

There is a part of me that says they expect customers to stay in such filth because they do.
I wonder if a motel would let you check out the room before you actually took it? I remember my father doing that and they always let him.
Of course, that was years ago and things change.

It sounds like this problem was not limited to only your room. I'm sure that if everyone in your group was as unhappy (rightfully so) with their rooms as you were that they would have been happy to load up and move to another hotel, especially if it just meant going across the street. Bottom line is that while I agree with you 110% about how disgusting and unlivable the rooms must have been, I have to say that it was your responsibility to get your money back and take your kids to a more acceptable location.
I think the only explanation you can hope to obtain is that the owners/operators of that location just don't care that their rooms are disgusting. Call the health department. Maybe they can do something about it.

I am surprised a church group chose a Motel 6, given the reputation of said chain.
That said, I agree, you should not have been subjected to any of what you describe. My behind would have pitched a fit to high heaven until someone cleaned the room and provided fresh linens.
Either that or demand a refund and go elsewhere. There are a bazillion hotels in that immediate area. No need to stay in filth.

When I think of Motel 6- that is exactly what I envision- which is why I would never stay there. That being said, one time I got stuck with a hotel room at the Ramada (another chain that I wouldn't usually stay at) in Florida via Hotwire. When I walked into the room it was disgusting- bugs on the nightstand something red and streaky in the bathtub- not rust (blood perhaps?) damp carpet etc- and you better believe that I was only there long enough to find another hotel that had availabilty that night. Even though I had just gotten off a long flight and had to use the bathroom- I didn't even want to do that there. We ended up staying at the DoubleTree and having a great time. If we hadn't been able to find another room, I seriously would have slept in the car. And this was just me and a friend. If I had kids I couldn't imagine subjecting them to potentially dangerous health issues. Why didn't you move?

You had the chance to move to another motel, but chose not to so - thereby subjecting children under your care to that health hazard/filth - because it was "inconvenient" for you to move them?
Please tell me that your church has stripped you of any authority to make decisions for its youth group.

You said you arrived with a church group. I assume the group booked more than one room? Was everyone elses rooms as nasty?
You should of ran out of that room and demanded a clean room, or left the hotel immediately. Even if you were tired.
What is more important your health or being tired?
If you had doubts why the Ohio Health Dept could allow such disgust and atrocious maintenance to a hotel room I have to ask you why you allowed your family to sleep in such filth.
This entire letter makes me itch! IF cleanliness is next to Godliness then you were in HELL!

I would have slept in the car rather than deal with pee-soaked sheets and poopy towels. Nasty.

I don't know if an "explaination" is going to do any good. I mean, is it going to fix anything? I think YOU owe it to yourself and to everyone else who may stay here to
CALL THE BOARD OF HEALTH YOURSELF!!!
Maybe the reason they haven't done anything is because everyone is to mousy to report this. Take charge of the situation! You should have been on the phone with the Ohio Board of Health immediately, you can find their number in the phone book the hotel has right there in the nightstand next to the Bible.
Motel 6 isn't going to give you any explaination, I'm afraid.
I also do think you are due some sort of refund. But to be honest, I think you should have listened to your husband, and just walked across the street to the Holiday Inn. There is no way I would stay in a room with poopy towels and pee-soaked sheets. Ew.

I would have taken the dirty towel doen to the lobby where people were checking in and complained very loudly!
If you cherged the room on a credit card, you should have left and contacted the credit card company and explained the situation.
My last experience at a Motel 6 was negative and I will NEVER stay at one again. The motel was next door to a liquor store and drunks sat in the stairwells and talked loudly all night with filthy language.
The pool was dirty and the housekeepers were smoking and drinkiong beer around the pool even though there were NO SMOKING and NO ALCOHOL signs posted.

This woman's husband was right...they needed to pack up go to the Holiday Inn across the street explain about the deplorable conditions at their competitor (Motel 6) and they may have received a discount for at least the one night.
Writing a complaint after you leave the premises lacks credibility about why you did not speak up at that time if the conditions were that deplorable/filthy. Especially regarding the towel...I mean you call down for fresh towels but failt to complain about the conditions at that time.
Makes them wonder if the rooms were really that bad or if you just want those expenses refunded.
Also photos would have helped alot. I am sure someone had a camera phone or other type of camera since it was a group trip.

What exactly was stopping you from walking across the street with your kids and checking into the Holiday Inn? Of course, that wouldn't take Motel 6 off the hook for the deplorable conditions, but at least you and your kids would have been clean and safe. Motel 6 may expect its customers to stay in filth, but that doesn't mean you have to.

What I am havinga hard time understanding is why you stayed???
If the conditions you describe are accurate, why didn't you grab the kids and get the heck out of there?

The only time I stayed at a Motel 6, the clerk was protected behind bulletproof glass. The room was like a large shoebox, with fluorescent fixtures packed with dead bugs casting a harsh unnatural light on the room.
There is no need to go on, is there? It is all coming back to me, and now I realize why I never considered staying at this trash heap of a chain again.
Paying to stay overnight is a substantial expense. But it is worth paying more to avoid a nightmare like this. Peace of mind is worth something.
I remember as I left wondering what kind of client would use Motel 6 on a regular basis. I couldn't answer the question.

"why Motel 6 is able to expect a customer to stay in such filth!"
Because it's Motel 6. The only time I ever stayed in a Motel 6, I was 19 and my college boyfriend was visiting over the summer and we needed some, um... alone time. (If you're reading this, Mom, we were at the park all day.) It was pretty gross, but... we managed to put it out of our minds.
I stayed at an iffy hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, near "Snake Alley" (let's just say: the "iffiest" place in the country). I was 20 and poor and it was all I could afford for the two weeks I was there. That hotel was cleaner than the aforementioned Motel 6.
I'm not saying what you had to deal with is okay. It isn't. It's disgusting. But you booked hotel rooms at the cheapest, ickiest hotel on the planet. I'm just saying you shouldn't have been surprised.
I've always been happy with Super 8 motels everywhere I've gone.
