Non-service animals are generally not allowed into stores for several reasons; health code and safety regulations, as well as liability, are the 3 main issues behind this. Some states even has laws in place making it illegal to bring a non-service animal into a business.
As a customer, I don't want to step in a pile of dog, cat, guinea pig, snake, monkey, ferret (etc etc) mess that some careless, irresponsible pet owner didn't bother cleaning up while I'm shopping for my toilet paper. And what if your animal gets loose and bites someone, or causes someone to fall and break their arm? If your cute widdle puppy dog that you just HAD to bring into the store ends up biting me or, God forbid, my kid, then you and I are going to have some SERIOUS issues!
Pets in store = high risk of health hazards, customer and employee accidents and injuries, and property damage; resulting in lawsuits, higher insurance rates, state and federal fines, and ultimately, higher prices.
You might think your pet is cute, but do the rest of us a favor and THINK before you interact with us. Leave the pet at home where it belongs.

"I went to WalMart with my cute widdle pupperdawg in his widdle puppypurse -dudn't he wook kyoot?- and was told by the door greeter that I couldn't bring him in.
"But he's SO KYOOT, wook at him in his widdle bag," I said.
"We can only allow service animals, like seeing eye dogs," said the big mean WalMart man.
So I threw a big ol' hissy fit and DEMANDED to speak to a manager, because NOBODY puts Baby in the corner! I ALWAYS get my way! I should be allowed to do what I want, when I want, and where I want, because I'm just so cool like that. I wanna do what I wanna do, and don't you tell me I can't! I got mad that the manager did not instantly appear in a puff of smoke the second I asked to apeak with him, so I left, cussing the big fat door greeter on my way out.
I decided I better make myself the victim and get everybody feelin' sorry for me so they won't think I'm just a selfish, spoiled, whiny, ignorant fool; so I made up a story about the Captain Insane-o door greeter who chased me and beat me up."

Well I am very sad to see all the descrimination against people who want to carry their animals with them. My 4.5 lb dog goes with me wherever I go simply because she gets upset when she is left at home. She is a people dog and gets anxious when left alone.
I am allegric to perfume does that mean that I should tell everyone I pass to stop wearing it because it offends me. If this person was like me then my dog has a very nice carrier that looks like a purse and no one is the wiser that she is with me. I can assure you that she is much cleaner than any snotty nose kid running around or the person that just went to the bathroom and didn't wash their hands but just has to touch everything.
And each and everyone of you that talked about an animal being an accessory or the person carrying them is trying to be Paris Hilton, shame on you. You have no clue. You have no idea what that pet might mean to that person. My mother keeps my dog durning the day while I am at work because she is all alone and my dog brings her so much comfort and breaks the loneliness. Who said all pets are nasty? You see hundreds of people in Wal-mart at any given time and there are no telling what kind of germs they are carrying around. Plus usually a human does not get germs from a DOG. Most germs are species specific and do not transfer. LEAVE OUR FURRY FRIENDS ALONE AND LET THEM BE WITH THE PEOPLE THEY LOVE.

This is ridiculous. I'm sure a person who had the courage to "get loud" with a walmart greeter would have the ability to call the police if they were shoved, grabbed, and marked up by said person. Why would you try to bring a dog into Wal-Mart? What if you run into someone with allergies? Hey, I like to smoke but they don't let me light up in the middle of the store. You sound like a very rude and inconsiderate person. By the way, did you REALLY think talking to the manager was going to get you permission to drag your dog inside?

I do have to agree with you on the Wal-Mart employee assaulting you and trying to take your dog away, but unless if it was a seeing-eye dog, then you should've never brought it in at all, just leave it at home instead.

I thought it was a requirement for Wal-Mart's door greeter to be 80+ years old, and half-dead. Looks like they changed their policy...

Unless the dog you had was a seeing eye dog or some other dog that assists the disabled and you are disabled, you have no right to bring a dog into a Wal-mart store. That door greeter assaulted you and you should have pressed charges but you are not allowed to bring any dogs except dogs that assist the disabled into Wal-Mart. It's health department police.

Why is it lonely people feel the need to bring their "faithful" companion into stores? I am a dog owner but the only shop she goes to is Petsmart. There are far too many situations that could occur (even in a bag). By the way carrying cases should only be used on a special need basis. Not day to day business. Leave the dog at home. It doesn't want to go shopping. Saying that(if true) the greeter's response was over the top and sure Walmart can verify by viewing their in house security cameras. Case closed.

assistance animals. There's one lady in my town, she rides a wheelchair scooter and has a poodle in her lap...the lady's arms are not too great, so the dog hands money to the cashier in its mouth.

When I first got my shih txu, dottie jean, I walked into wal mart with her, and they stopped me half way in. Told me to put her in a bag and I can take her with me. So I put her in the carry bag, and then another person, told me no, and to take her out. so I did.
There are some that have been REALLY sneaky though, and hide the dog in a stroller. Or in a baby onesie with a blanket.
I would NEVER go as far as restaurants though. Except on the way home from the breeders, I sat with her in Mcdonalds in my arms at a table near the door. They all fawned over her and gave her biscuits. I make a mental note now a days of where I can and can't take her.

My sister was in a restaurant and some woman had her chihuahua with her. When my sister mentioned it to the manager, the manager told her that the customer said it was a service dog, and the manager was not allowed to question it. The manager was nice enough to give my sister a gift certificate to come back, but my sister has allergies and she really shouldnt have had to sit near a dog that someone decided they couldn't spend an hour away from. Dogs are not children, you CAN leave them home alone.

I am so sick of this "dog-cessory" trend. You are not Paris Hilton. Leave the dog at home. It is not cute or charming to carry some poor little dog around in a purse.
As far as the assault, the proper way to handle this is to call the police, and file a report. Were there any witnesses? Did you go to the doctor and document your injuries? Gather all the evidence, then press charges.

Animals, other than service dogs, are not allowed in Walmart - - period. It doesn't matter what the other kids do. You were wrong to enter Walmart with your dog. When told of their "no dogs except service dogs" policy it sounds like you got in a yellling match with the greeter - - very mature.
As far as the alleged assult is concerned - - if you didn't report it to the police then you have nothing to gripe about.

I admit I'm curious about the "big goon door greeter." I admit that I"ve been in a Walmart perhaps only 10 times, but the only door greeters I've ever seen are men and women who are quite elderly (80 or so).

I am sure they have nothing better to do than police your son's irrational fears. I'd play that on you tube it's better than the crazy woman who called the 911 because she couldn't get a hamburger at Burger King.

So if a person is afraid of someone with a gun, they should just suck it up if someone's waving a rifle around?
There's a big difference between racism and fear of dogs. Mostly, my sister is afraid of unruly dogs because she was bitten very badly in the shoulder and side by a pair of terriers (not while in our family; she was adopted from less than wonderful circumstances). Humans (most of them, and most of them out in public) have a little thing called self-control. Dogs have been known to bite out of the blue, which is why you never let a child pet a strange dog.

So basically you're one of those "Just because they break the rules, I can too" people? You don't bring a dog to a store! Just because others break this rule, doesn't mean you can.
Did you file a police report on the shover? I find it hard to believe that a person like that who apparently has a reputation to become violent with customers has a job there.
Complaints like these make me so mad. There are others out there with real comsumer issues and people who instigate store confrontations by refusing to follow rules make getting proper customer service assistance hard on the rest of us.

The title of some letters just makes me laugh out loud. I read this one, and thought of the 80 year old guy at my WalMart assaulting someone.
Then I read the OP was trying to bring a pet into WalMart. That is a really stupid thing to do, because this is WalMart, not PetSmart. Even funnier, the OP says that several people have been seen in WalMart with dogs. I don't think so.
What isn't funny is the accusation that the greeter assaulted the OP. I'm sure this is all detailed in a police report, complete with digital pictures of the injuries. That is what I would have done if someone assaulted me.

Whether or not your dog should have been with you, this guy should not have touched you! Wal-Mart greeters should be just that-greeters, not bouncers! I agree he should be fired.

If you were assaulted and marks were left on your body, you need to file a police report and get documentation from a docter regarding your shoulder. No one should be touching you without permission.
However, this trend of people carrying their dogs everywhere with them needs to be stopped. Its not cute. Unless there is a legitimate reason that you should have a dog with you at all times, just leave the pet at home.

Leave your dog at home. You have no business taking it into stores. For one thing, it's against health code regulations in businesses where food is served.
You're not special. Don't do it again.
