Harden up, Hershey!

Posted Mon September 8, 2008 12:00 pm, by amanda r. written to Hershey Foods Corporation

Write a Letter to this Company

To whom it Concerns:

I am a fan of your limited edition Hershey Kisses, featuring the unique flavors such as coconut, Pumpkin Spice, Candy Corn and Cherry Cordial.

However, one problem I have noticed with these special flavors, Why are they ALWAYS of a mushy consistency? Is it the filling, a new formula? I'm forever having to stock them in the freezer upon coming home from the store with them. They harden up in a few hours only to get mushy again when they hit the air!

This is not just one particular stores problem, but every single store I have purchased the candies from!

What really prompted me to write this letter today of all days, is that today's batch I bought, of the Pumpkin spice flavored kisses(which are absolutely decadent by the way!) was nearly all inedible! The candies became so melted, that when in the fridge or freezer, they fused with the foil wrapping, and made it impossible to enjoy a whole kiss without picking little pieces of foil out of the candy.

It really is a shame, because I was going to bring these to share with my mom and grandmother, and since they have arthritic hands, it would be hard for them to enjoy the candy due to picking out all the foil.

Believe me, I am still going to buy your awesome flavored kisses, but I really would like to see some sort of quality change in the soft consistency.

Sincerely

Amanda R.

last night, I used some of the pumpkin spice kisses in a smoothie made
with vanilla yogurt and cinnamon.

Pure heaven!

i just read the response you got from hershey. i'm glad the issue was
resolved. i was thinking it had to be the ingredients in the special
ones not standing up to temperatures as well. i'm not familiar with
the flavors you described, but they sound wonderful, especially the
pumpkin.

We don't have any of those flavours here in Canada. Be blesses with
what you have, those sound like wonderful flavours.

Thank you for contacting us about HERSHEY'S KISSES Pumpkin Spice
Flavored. I am sorry you were disappointed and appreciate you bringing
this to our attention.

Chocolate contains cocoa butter which makes the product sensitive to
heat, humidity, and changes in temperature. Exposure to these
conditions may cause a harmless discoloration on the surface of the
bar known as cocoa butter bloom. At excessive temperatures chocolate
can melt, causing the bar to look misshapen and tan in color with a
loss of flavor. To help our products reach you in good condition, we
have printed instructions on our shipping cases to inform all
distributors of the proper handling and storage of our products.

We apologize for the problem you experienced with our product. You
will receive a coupon by postal mail in 2-4 weeks.

Guess who's stopping by Target on the way to her dad's house?

I found a flavor "Caramel apple" at Wal-Mart the other day and it was
pretty good, and not mushy (the chocolate part at least)... but that
was all they had.

Thanks!

Chocolate is nasty.

They're supposed to be softer...because of the almost truffle-like
consistency of the insides.

Still, it's a good suggestion.

I don't know whether to feel like I'm missing out, because I am not
even interested in trying any of these special flavors (I'm picky), or
to feel glad because I am pushing to lose 10 pounds, and the fewer
temptations, the better.

Great letter. If they can't make a kiss with filling and make it stay
the proper consistency, they need to go back to the drawing board!

I have had cherry cordial, vanilla cream and peanut butter kisses,
and they are all mushy. I think it's because of the filling, but I
don't understand why the chocolate surrounding the filling can't be as
firm as regular kisses. It might have something to do with the
manufacturing process, or maybe because it's now solid.

I have never had a bag of melted ones, but I usually don't buy them in
the summer. If they can't hold up to typical summer temperatures,
then Hershey really should look into a different formula.

Nice letter. I hope you hear back.

O.oooooo my moth is watering at the thought. Have not seen those
around here but intend to look more closely.

I like the cherry cordial kisses, and the mint ones they seem to only
have out once in a while.

I'm thinking it has to do with the filling. Hubby gave me a glass jar
filled with chocolate this past summer. There were several kinds of
Hershey's Kisses in it including regular kisses, cherry cordial,
caramel, and vanilla cream. The only ones that were consistently
mushy were the vanilla creams.

I'm mad at you! Your mention of candy corn kisses has caused me to
rise from my desk and use my lunch time to try and track down this
product. AND I COULDN'T FIND IT AT THE TWO STORES I TRIED! I might
die if I don't get to try what sounds like my idea of a perfect candy:
chocolate and candy corn. Yum!

Seriously, I hope they get to the bottom of this. I love the cherry
ones and have never had a problem. But I've always had them at a
relative's house, in winter. These relatives keep it very cold, so
even the softest chocolate ends up quite hard.

Having just returned from Hershey PA and getting some kisses straight
from the factory, I don't think this is a new formula for kisses
overall, maybe it has something to do with the filling.
