Maytag's Commercial About Voting is Not Funny

Posted Fri September 12, 2008 12:00 pm, by Jared C. written to Maytag Corporation

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I know that you are trying to get a humorous reaction with your recent TV ad with the Maytag repairman in a voting booth.

However, I think Americans of ALL political stripes don't find this ad funny. It reminds us of the fiasco we went through in the 2000 election - a nasty memory I think most of us would rather leave buried in our collectively repressed unconscious.

I realize you were just trying to be funny with the ad, but I've yet to meet one person who finds it funny....just painful...especially with how the Repairman hands a bunch of (obviously uncounted and also damaged) ballots to the volunteer at the polling place.

Perhaps you could use another ad? Or perhaps you could tweak this one a bit? Or maybe market test your next ad against a random panel of consumers....

i think it's kind of a case of "if i can't laugh, i'll cry." i don't
think it's funny either, though. obviously, if 2000 had turned out
properly, we would never have had to watch george bush systematically
ruin our country. there's no way to say what kind of president al
gore would have been, but it couldn't possibly equal the mockery the
current administration has made of things.

I want to see the commercial! Please put up a link to it. I'm sure
it's funny. Of course, I presume by now that everyone knows where the
dimpled and hanging chads came from? In Florida the voting was done by
slipping a card into a little box and using a stylus thing to poke a
hole through the card where appropriate in order to register your
vote. What happened is that when a van load of people with senile
dementia were wheeled in to vote for Albutt the dishonest people at
the polls pushed several cards in at once. The old folks were too weak
to push the pin through all of the cards and produce nice clean holes,
leaving dimples and hanging chads. It's as simple as that. Liars and
cheats for Albutt. That's why only Albutt wanted the dimpled and
hanging chads counted. He knew how they got that way and that most of
them would be for him. Surely you don't think that new voting machines
will even slow down the Liberals at cheating? Of course, cheating is a
good thing when you're a Liberal--just like lying, stealing, "doing"
the interns, perjury, etc. The more the better! That's why the same
people would vote for Bill Clinton again: he validates their
lifestyles. The Liberal's hero: a pot-smoking, flag-burning,
womanizing, draft-dodging reject from Alice's Restaurant. Albutt was
just a shabby substitute for the Main Man, Billy Job. So expect more
dimpled chads or whatever, plus millions of the dead rising to vote
for the Democratic Ticket.

Saw the commercial while watching CNN this morning.

I found it neither funny, nor offensive.

It did, however, make me briefly hope there is no nonsense this
election. (wishful thinking, I am sure.)

Wow, you must know some uptight people, including yourself, if you
can't find anyone who thinks that's humorous. Maybe you're wound a
little too tight??? Have too stressful a life??? I found this
commercial funny- sorry.

You surely ARE repressed if you're still living in the year 2000 and
can't move past the "pain."

I don't know anyone who would consider the ad to be "painful" (we're
all adults and have moved on from the debacle that was the 2000 U.S.
presidential election), bu I just consider it to be... benign.
Nothing. It's a commercial.

You mention twice in your letter that you are aware the ad was meant
to be funny.....

" I know that you are trying to get a humorous reaction with your
recent TV ad"
"I realize you were just trying to be funny with the ad,"

Many people did find it funny and thats ok too.

Actually, I'd like to compliment you on a very well written post which
we don't see often enough, and I don't see anything wrong with
expressing your opinions to corporate America. You didn't get all
dramatic about it - - you simply stated your opinion and suggested
perhaps more market testing might be in order before their next
commercial is put on the air.

Personally speaking, I find the commercial amusing as do many people I
know. The spot for you, on the other hand, brings back what I assume
are unpleasant memories of the 2000 election.

Oh, and I'd also like to commend you on not ending your letter by
demanding a housefull of free appliances or announcing that you'll
never buy another Maytag product as long as you live and that you will
tell your family and all your friends and anyone else you run into
(whether you know them or not) about what a horrible company Maytag
is.

All in all this is a class letter even though I don't agree with your
stand.

Isn't our right to freedom of speech in America great?

I find it incredibly funny! It is a Joke on the Hanging Chads from
the 2000 election. My dad worked (and Still does) for the local
county elections office. That year for Christmas he gave all us that
are able to vote a small vile of Chads from the election. No, it was
NOT Florida! We all thought it was fanny as heck. I crack up every
time I see the end with the guy saying "Not again!" If they would
have used me as a tester, I would have been laughing and yelling
"That's GREAT!" It's FUNNY!

why people are saying this isn't relevant or too old to remember.
Anyone who is old enough to vote remembers it. I'm old enough to
vote, but don't. I do laugh though, and I look forward to seeing it.

When is everyone going to stop being so sensitive? Not every company
has to be politically correct, nor do they have to try to please
everyone. Seriously, it's just a commercial, please just change the
channel if you see it again. Lighten up.

I thought it humorous. We can put a man on the moon but can't____ (you
fill in the blanks).

About 70%, give or take. That still leaves the other 30% to take in a
little chuckle.

Politics is all a big crap shoot. If you can't laugh about it you
pretty much are looking around for some way of putting yourself out of
your misery.

I think I agree with you on this. Not only is it a dumb commercial,
but it doesn't make any sense. When the repairman says he has to
leave because he's busy, doesn't that contradict the claim that the
Maytag repairman is NEVER busy? That's what their entire advertising
campaign has been based on all these years.

While the idea of hanging chads was a bit amusing at the time, the
outcome certainly was not funny. I think you're right about Maytag
bringing up unpleasant memories for a lot of people. Advertising is
supposed to leave a good impression on the audience, not a regretful
one.
