Rude Announcement at Michaels

Write a Letter to this Company
I have a complaint about the Michaels craft store in Florissant, MO on North Lindbergh. I believe it was November 14th. I had went there because I had a 50% off coupon that I had received on my last visit and it was near closing. It was about 8:50pm which was about 10 minutes before they closed and someone announced that the store was closing and to bring final selections to check out etc. but then also announced to someone (I don't recall the employee's name) to do a floor check. I thought that was pretty rude to do that considering they weren't closed and it was announced for customers to clearly hear.
By me providing the date, I feel that this should be addressed to the staff that worked that night including the manager. And also inform all staff that it's unacceptable. I agree with making announcements that the store is closing but announcing the instruction of an employee to do floor checks was ridiculous.

Nothing rude about that at all. Rude would have been if they said, "To the person wearing X clothes get your *** up to the registers now"... now THAT would have been rude.
Frankly I feel your reaction is over-reaction.

April, I am going to let you in on a little secret, okay? Retail employees have lives outside of work. They do not want to be stuck there after their shift is over with.
I going to ask you something. Assuming you have a job, I would like to know how you would feel if 5 minutes before you are scheduled to leave work, your boss were to give you a project to do & tell you that it must be done before you leave for the day. You'd be pretty ticked off, wouldn't you? Going into a store 10 minutes before closing is pretty much doing just that.

Umm, where I used to work, a "floor check" meant to go around and make sure that the shelves were in order and suitable for the overnight or morning stock crew to work with. . . make sure stock is in reasonable order, nobody has strewn things all over the floor, and no "accidents" have occurred and gone unnoticed and unreported. If the stock crew has to clean before they can start, they can't as effectively provide you, the consumer, with well-stocked shelves.
A "floor count" or "head count" might mean to see how many customers are left in the store, but it wouldn't be announced publicly, and it would just be to keep us all on the same page and give us an idea of what our current priorities should be. For instance, if there is one customer left in the store, then most registers can be closed, drawers counted, etc, and we can focus more on neatness. If nine groups of customers are left, registers should be left open, backup cashiers should possibly be called, and floor employees might want to start asking people if they need help finding anything.
In short, a "floor check" is not necessarily all about you.

The "floor check" announcement is to assist the lagging customers prior to closing the store. It also ensures the safety of the staff. You might not beleive it but some citizens will hide in a store only to commit a robbery when less witnesses are around. Can you imagine that maybe, just maybe, other issues are being addressed at the time of this ridiculous announcement.

That was not rude at all.
Try being the rude guy that has to shut down a grocery store on Christmas eve at 6pm that gets called every name in the book. Saying that I am going to ruin their Christmas because I wont let them to get "one thing" This is even with store hours posted 2 weeks prior!
Good Day

Wow, that is one heck of a hypersensitive reaction to a simple instruction to an employee.

As to what the announcement contains, I don't think it matters. Asking for a floor check is pretty standard, it is worded differently at different stores. At Home Depot they say "and assist any customers making their last selections," or something like that. I think you are taking the wording too personally.
I think you are thinking that if someone saw you they would make you leave. In my experience, when an employee approaches me in this situation, I simply say "I know what I need, I'll be out in a minute." The employee moves on.

Despite this, were you able to check-out and use your coupon? Or did the floor check person make you leave before you could buy?
If they prevented you from being able to buy, this would be a real shame.

April? Do you know what a floor check is? Perhaps it was a cue to the associates to look for shoppers still in the store and assist them. Perhaps it was a call to make sure things are not out of place in the isles. Were you approached? Did they turn the lights out on you? Did they throw you out of the store 10 minutes prior to closing? Apparently they didn't block the entry doors and let you in.
What if you were in the store and an annoucement came over the intercom to clean a spill in isle 3. You can hear that so you think that is rude? Big Lots makes securiity checks over their intercom all the time at my local store. I don't think it is rude.
I am glad you don't mind store is closing announcements, because if you shop just prior to closing you will find most stores have similar procedures. They also have announcements prior to opening in many cases. My opinion without more facts you appear to be over reacting.

The store I work in (not Michaels) does floor (or security as we call it) checks about 5 to 10 minutes before closing so we know how many customers are still in the building.
Most retailers do that.

Store employees have a life too. Alot of retailers do not pay overtime if customers are still in the store. I worked retail for years. You know when the store closes. Employees want to be done at the end of their shift. Be courteous and have your purchases done ahead of time.
