Horrific Experience at Burger King

On 12/10/08 I went thru the drive thru at store 3446 in Marion Ohio. I ordered the Double Whopper meal with no pickles and no tomatoes (order 85). The price on the outside menu said $5.99 plus .60 to make it large - so I asked for the large. It should have priced out at about $5.69 plus tax. When I went to pay, I was told it was $7.12! Where was the other 60 cents coming from? I asked for a receipt and was provided one that did not have any money amounts on it; I then had to ask for another receipt that actually showed the money. When I saw the amount, I asked the cashier and she said that the price was right and that it was 60 cents for the medium and another 60 cents for the large.
Thinking that I mis-read the posted pricing, I paid and then drove back thru the drive thru to recheck myself and sure enough, the POP outside sign simply stated 60 cents for large - nothing about plus medium or addition to medium; so I waited as other paid and drove on to the window where I asked for the manager.
A skinny young girl came up and said she was the manager and the the large size was $1.20 more. When I told that this is not what the sign said, she got her manager. The second manager restated that the sign said in addition to the medium - so not wanting to hold up the drive thru lane, I went around again. The sign did not say anything about adding to the medium, in fact it just says 60 cent more for a large.
So I waited for the line to move again and this time asked the second manager to show me where it said that on the sign. After all, selling for a higher price than advertised is consumer fraud in Ohio. She laughed at me and pointed me out to several other workers as I drove around the store for the third time.
WHen she finally emerged for the rear door, she thrust her hands upon her hips and screamed "Are you going to hold up MY drive thru lane?". Seeing as that I had gone around three times so that I did not hold anyone up, I was very put off by her remarks.
She then stated that indeed there was nothing on the POP outside sign that said anything about in addition to the medium price, told me that calling her District Manager wouldn't change anything and then gave me the district manager's phone number, turned around and went back into the store. Not wanting to block the drive thru, I moved to a parking lot just behind the store about 45 feet from the back door.
I tried calling the district manager. No answer on the phone. So I called the local corporate franchise office of Harrison Restaurants in Delaware and related the story to the office manager there. She said that she would have the district manager call me. Now my food is cold.
After leaving voicemail's for the district manager, she and I finally speak. She says that she is in a meeting but that she cam look at the same sign where she is and agreed that it says nothing about the extra 60 cents and that I should, in her opinion, not be charged the extra and that I would need to speak to her boss.
In speaking with her boss, he concurred totally with my viewpoint, and further apologized and finally stated that he would have my entire meal replaced, cooked to order, have the 60 cents refunded and have the general manager that laughed and yelled at me bring this all out to me with in 2 to 5 minutes.
After 10 minutes, nothing happened. So I tired calling the district manager and her boss, leaving both voicemail's and numeric pages for each. Another 10 minutes and nothing. More voicemail's and numeric pages. Another 15 minutes and now her boss is on the phone saying that it will be right out. He gets a complete description of my car and where I am parked.
4 minutes later the back door opens and several employes are looking right at my car. 2 minutes later the door opens again and there is the heavy set general manager with curly reddish blonde hair that had laughed at and yelled at me with a bag in her hand.
She stands there swinging the bag, crossing and uncrossing her arms, finally grabs the middle of the bag and squeezes it, then marches the 45 feet to my car. She then breaks out her attitude and informs me she thinks I should find another restaurant to eat at. Make a few more rude comments, then hands me my food in the bag and 60 cents. I guess she forgot the tax of 3 pennies.
As I drive away, I call her boss again to tell him that the food was delivered and to inform him about the attitude, the wait, the smashing and rudeness. As I hang up, I open the smashed bag to begin to have my lunch - after waiting over 90 minutes - only to find that the order was a medium sized fries and that my sandwich has pickles on it, tomatoes on it and no catsup or mayonnaise!
I want a complete refund, a letter of apology and the phone number to whoever can rectify this egregious and horrific service.

I really love this letter, especially when we get to the third or fourth trip around the drive-thru to complain about being overcharged by 60 cents. Wonder how much gas that wasted.
Anyone else a fan of the movie Better Off Dead? This letter reminds me so much of the two dollar kid. "Two Dollars! I want my two dollars! TWO DOLLARS..... TWO DOLLARS!"

Yes they where wrong for not having the proper amount on the sign and get away with it because people are so busy they grab what they need and leave, and if they do realize what has happend they don't bother with it.They should have just apologized to begin with and offer your $0.60 back or offer to comp your meal but you went through alot over $0.60.I know that you went out of your way not to hold up the drive thru and be polite but you could have went in also instead of driving around in circles. To be honest I don't think they where really concerned about $0.60 and after everything that happend would prefer that you did not return. Burger Kings policy is "have it your way" but believe me when I tell you thats not the way it is.I worked there when I was going through school and I would never let me family or anyone I knew eat there,it was so nasty and I witnessed so many things but the last time was when there was a green peice of meat in the pan with the rest of the meat that had been sitting there way over the limit,I informed by boss and she just had them throw the peice away and left the rest there,it was all contaminated and too old to be served anyways but they didn't care, thats the moment I quite and will never allow anyone in my family,my kids or anyone I know eat there.
Just don't go there anymore that would solve the problem all together there is alot of other fast food places to eat that aren't like Burger King.

I love the title of this letter. It conjures up visions of a serious felony, the ensuing trial, and state jail time. Then it turns out its just Kathy Bates laughing evilly and squeezing a bag.

I heard about new BK burger shots on the radio and went to get them for me and my husband....... as it turned out.... The employees and the manager at bk had no idea what I was talking about...... they pretty much laughed at me and told me white castle was across the street..... I really think burer king has just bad customer service in general....... even if my store doesnt carry something I still know which other stores do carry it so I can direct the customer where to go.

Not sure what your local tax is though...
However, their actions were extremely rude and childish.
I'd personally recommend never eating there again if they're going to act like *that*

What did the manager say when you told her she was short $.03 after giving you your food and $.60 back?

Seriously? So how much spit do you think was in your "bag of smashed food" ?
I can't believe you actually ate it.
Seriously?

Your math is off.
You said the meal was $5.99 and .60 to upsize so that's $6.59.
The tax in my state is 7% so that would come to $7.06 leaving a 6 cent difference.I would give you the 6 cents in the interest of good customer service. You could probably open your door at the wondow and retrieve more than that!
I don't work for Burger King nor do I put such garbage into my body.
I believe we are what we eat!
BK should gladly pay you the difference but that would have been a matter to take to the manager then.

I can understand fighting for principle and such but for how this turned out I honestly think you need to rethink how to pick your battles.
You spent more than the apparent 60cents difference in gas going in and out of the drive thru lane, then parking your car and I assume letting your car idle while waiting for them to bring you out another meal.
And the outcome ended up not being what you were fighting for. So you lost both the battle and the war. Victory was not yours.

Is anyone here from Ohio? I notice that math of 8% is spot-on with what Burger King charged the OP, but I have the sales tax rate in OH being 5.5%. Is meal tax higher there?
Either way, I have no clue where the OP is getting $.60 for the discrepancy. Even at 5.5% tax, the difference is only $.21.
My advice to the OP would be to listen to the manager and find another place to eat. Especially if she's wrong and created this scene over nothing.

I just wish I had that kind of time to spend repeatedly circling a Burger King for 60 cents.

"I guess she forgot the tax of 3 pennies."
Did you drive around the restaurant another three times to let her know?

YOU SAID: "The price on the outside menu said $5.99 plus .60 to make it large - so I asked for the large. It should have priced out at about $5.69 plus tax. When I went to pay, I was told it was $7.12! Where was the other 60 cents coming from?"
(1) Since when does $5.99 + $.60 = $5.69? I assume you meant to type $6.59 instead of $5.69.
(2) $6.59 + 8% tax does equal $7.12.
(3) You wasted 90 minutes of your time and probably a gallon of gas at Burger King fighting over 60 cents, and in the end, you think you "won."
(4) This would've been "horrific" if maybe somebody's brakes had failed at the drive-thru and 4 people were killed in the resulting pileup.
(5) Repeat #3. Again. And again. And again.

I'm thinking someone forgot to slap on the "-er" to the sign...as in, "$.60 for larger meal" or something like that.
I would not have gotten very upset over .60. I might have pointed out that their sign was a bit incorrect.
I would have never wasted the gas of going through drive through three times--I think you must have burned up more that sixty cents of gasoline, my friend.
I don't think Burger King wants anymore to do with you; they made that clear all ready. And I would have never eaten that food. God knows what they did to it.

I hate it when prices are not as marked and employees are too dumb to do basic math. Yes, its only 60 cents but its wrong that that they are charging more for an item than its listed price. Both the Hardees where I live and the one 60 miles away also charges more for the chicken fingers meal than what is listed and they need to be more competent with their signs.

It's only a sandwich, look at all the aggravation you want through and for what! You may or may not get your satisfaction, but one thing is for certain YOU are the one that got upset the most, YOU are the one that was emotionally drained over the incident, was it worth it for a 7.00 meal???

Honestly? You should find another restaurant. This is a place where they will do horrible things to your food if they recognize you, your voice or your car.
I also hate to say it, but all for 60 cents, you got what happened to you. If it was really such a huge deal, why didn't you go into the store rather than circle the drive thru 3 times? If you couldn't get it resolved, you could have asked for your money back and gone elsewhere.
Good luck getting that refund.

Now I see what I could use a cell phone for, if I had one.
Not really. After calling people out of meetings, and such a fuss over this, I'm not surprised about what happened in the end. The management can refuse to serve you, you know.
I think you should find another place to purchase your fast food, because these people definitely have your number now. Both your m-o and your cell #.

Perfect example of why sometimes, "did you talk to he manager when it happened" is NOT a good idea.
I never, ever, ever, EVER talk to the manager at the POS when there is an issue with fast good. I do not trust people not to do something to my food.
I dont blame you for being upset. I would have also contacted corporate if the signs were not clear.

I, too, live in Ohio. Sales tax at fast food places is odd, IMHO.
For example, if I go to the MCDonalds three blocks from me, with an address in Columbus, I pay LESS sales tax than if I go to a Mcdonalds two miles from me, with an address in Dublin.
I knwo one of them charges 6.75%, but I cant tell you which, LOL.
