Fisher Price Doll Says "Islam is the Light"

Posted Thu December 25, 2008 12:00 pm, by Sharea S. written to Fisher-Price

Write a Letter to this Company

I purchased my daughter the "Little Mommy nurture, love, Grow doll" and was not please when I got it home. It goes through three phases... cooing and says mama... this toy is motion activated so after two times of cooing and ahhing (after being activated) the third time it coos and ahhs and then says in a Robotic voice (different than the normal cooing voice) "Islam is the light". I thought maybe I heard it wrong so I had my husband listen to it and asked him what it said and he said that it sounded like "Islam is the light" My husband being a marine was very upset! He called Fisher-Price /Mattel and they told him that it does not say this and that it is an error in the doll and that they would be happy to put a new microchip in it (come to find out we were not the first to complain). My husband was not satisfied with this due to he asked how something like this could be placed on a child's toy, and no one could come up with an answer. He even made the comment "Well if this is not what the toy says then please explain to me what the toy is supposed to be saying?" and no one could give him an answer... all they kept saying is it is an error in the doll and that Wal-Mart ,Target and K-Mart pulled all of these dolls off the shelf to have them sent back to Fisher-Price/Mattel to have the microchips replaced/corrected. I purchased this doll at Meijer in Grand Rapids, Michigan and after getting no where with Fisher-Price/Mattel my husband called Meijer and was bounced around from person to person not able to come up with an explanation of why they still had these toys in the store.

I am so disappointed because Fisher Price was unable to explain why this was recorded on the doll and was unable to say anything except "send it to us" and "we can put a new microchip in it" i am also disappointed in MEIJER for still carrying this doll with the saying on it! I searched it online and there are several stories on it! i just wish Fisher-Price/Mattel would Buck up and apologize for the mistake!

I would like Fisher-Price/Mattel to have all of these dolls pulled of the shelf and replaced. I have always bought Fisher-Price/Mattel toys and other products made by them but now i am really second guessing them and would like an explanation and apology!

I would also like an apology from meijer for not pulling these dolls off the shelves when their competitors were smart an pulled the dolls of the shelf to be sent back to Fisher-Price/Mattel to be "fixed"

Alot(not all) of people in America fail to realize that certain
major news networks only report terrorism from a certain
religion(example, Muslim). While I do agree ANY terrorism is bad no
matter what race or religion it comes from, no one realizes or sees
the amount of terrorism committed by other races and
religions(example- Jewish),because the news covers it up! Many people
(not all)also fail to realize that the Israeli military were indeed
very cruel and awful to be killing HUNDREDS, and I mean HUNDREDS of
innocent Palestinian civilians, most of those children. Those biased
news sites never ONCE accused them of committing cruel terrorist acts,
but instead found more ways to malign the innocent by IMPLYING their
bias reports in their stories, when you know what they really mean is
"Another terrorist Muslim is killed, hooray".These come from the
biased minds that always think that every Muslim is and is born a
terrorist, when there are indeed many good Muslims in this world, just
as there is other religions.
To wish death on innocent children from ANY race or religion is
just sickening, and the bias of this world is just plain awful. No
matter what happens, there will always be bias.

Honestly, these are the people that this society produces. Is anyone
else feeling nauseated as they read this crap? Did you honestly
believe that is what the toy said to you?

Do you honestly believe that this is a crackpot scheme to win the
hearts and minds of american children?

Scary that this is what it comes down to. This is why the world is
ending. We are all just too dumb to go on.

Where are the rational tolerant people?

You said that fisher-price/mattel offered to replace the 'faulty'
part- problem solved. Why do you think you deserve more than that? Do
you honestly think it was intentional?

My guess is that it was meant to sound like something else but with
your husband having the job he has you two make it out for the worst.
I know how most people in the service get- single minded and very
hateful- especially those in the middle east.

You should be very satisfied with their offer to replace it for you.

I don't see what your husband being a Marine has to do with the doll
that had been tampered with. It sounds like you are both of the mind
that people of the Islam faith are enemies of America.

Anti-American terrorist and Muslim are not synonymous.

Maybe the new president who's father was a Muslim and who can't
provide a birth certificate is hopping to it earlier than expected.

Remember 911 and yet you still have no problem with a religion that
thinks it's okay to kill anyone that doesn't agree with them.

Back in line number 99...

To anyone that considers this attitude as that of Hitler, you need to
look in the mirror.

He wanted to rule the world and make everyone believe what he did
just like Muslims.

When our children are running around the house saying ("Islam is the
Light Mommy") someone needs to explain!

FP offered to replace the chip!
I paid more for shipping and handleing than the doll itself cost.
This was one of the three things my baby asked for for christmas. She
thinks I sent her for a doctors appointment and askes ("is Lilly
better yet") everyday. I got a lot more than I barganed for thats for
sure. The employee that is reponsible for this needs to be saught out,
fired and then put under investigation.

WE DESERVE AN EXPLAINATION! I agree with what most all the people
said, as far as the religion differance and I don't think all musliums
are bad. Maybe it was a dirty trick from some confused kid or maybe it
was someone tring to brain wash our children. I know some people don't
think this is not such a bad think and people are takeing this to
seriously, but it blows my mind to think I paid for child to have that
sentance in her mind and a part of her vocab.

This doll and this quote is real! Please if you don't have children
and if you haven't heard this doll for yourself then don't post your
thoughts.

I could almost bet this batmoody works for FP.

The reason the for the military man being so upset and not satisfied
is because, he and most of his friend fight for this country everyday
to keep unwanted things such as this from happening.

ISLAM IS NOT THE LIGHT!!! Thats why everyone is so upset if anyone is
having trouble understanding.

What's the big deal?

Some disgruntled worker decided to put some stupid message on a doll.
That's what happened. And with everyone being so PC, the company
decided to not answer why (even if they did say why, it would be
speculation as they are not privy to the voices in the employees
head). Send the doll back and they will fix it for you. Who cares?

This is hardly the first time something like this has happend. Go to
snopes.com and read about all of them. I find it hilarious, but that's
just me.

After I read this letter the first time, I was at Target and saw this
doll - played with it and heard just garble, no mention of Islam,
nothing to warrant a letter - did hear something that sounded like
light.

Tonight I was in a different Target, waiting to ask the employee in
the toy dept a question, and found myself standing in front of this
freaky doll. Yup - had to hear it again. Holy Crap! It was
absolutely different. Sure did sound like "Islam is the Light."

I still can't believe it and am glad I never posted my original
thoughts about this. It may not be whatthe sound chip is actually
saying, but on the 2nd doll there is no dounbt that it could be heard
that way.

Still though - just get a new doll and let it go. I would.

Islamists want rights for themselves but never provide rights to
other. Look at how every Islamist (== terrorist) is up in arms about
Gaza but when Gaza was firing rockets, they were quiet. Similarly,
when muslims attacked mumbai and hand picked hindus, christinas and
jews, they were quiet. These muslims (==terrorists) let the muslims go
from Taj hotel.

For the naive who think this is handful of muslims, it is not true.
Wakeup, majority feel that Sept 11 was justified. They will not come
and tell you on your face. These are not handful, there is a major
population. Look at the muslim countries. THey treat non-muslims badly
but want equal rights every where else.

I actually saw a display of these dolls in the store today and started
playing with it. I tried and tried - I must have stood there for 20
minutes looking like a dope waving my hand in front of this doll's
face. Nothing even REMOTELY close to "Islam is the Light" that the OP
reports hearing. I tried with several of the dolls and nothing more
than coos, giggles and babbling with an occasional "Mama" thrown in
for good measure.

I don't know if the OP's instance was just a bad batch of dolls or
possibly a case of media influence, but none of the dolls that I
physically saw said anything like this.

Reply
by Cherry O. Posted Tue December 30, 2008 @ 3:16 PM

Well, they were unable to explain because it was not deliberate. You
can't explain why you did something if you didn't intend to do it. I
have listened to the sound file, and I honestly did not hear what you
heard. If I had been a manufacturer or tester of the doll, I would
have approved the sound, because it sounds to me like baby cooing--and
nothing else. My guess would be that there was nobody working on the
doll who heard what you heard. Many dolls use real baby sounds for
their voice functions, so possibly it didn't even occur to them that
an actual, pre-verbal infant would be saying something that sounds
like, "Islam is the light."

Please calm down and buy your daughter some nice, silent dolls that
she can use for pretend play about your religion (or non-religion) of
choice. An accident like this is not worth the sturm and drang.

I told you so! But I called this one. I knew someone, somewhere was
gonna pitch a religious fit over something else FP made this year.
It's become more predictable than the ball in Times Square on December
31st!

A company tries to branch out culturally and incorporate other faiths
and people are outraged and offended. There's no winning, I tell ya!

And to the OP; a recall AND an apology??? Really? Just because of a
goof up with a doll?

If this is the WORST thing that has ever happened in your life, I
wanna be you!

It sounds like the dolls are being pulled when where they are getting
complaints and the manufacturer is correcting the problem. Seriously
why are you so upset. You mentioned your husband as a marine and this
was why he was upset about the reference to Islam. You know we do
have Muslims serving in the marines too along with Christains, Jews
and others. If your husband has a problem with Muslims than I don't
see why being a marine is an explanation for this.

I believe that sometimes people can make themselves believe they are
hearing something when thats not actually what they are hearing it is
all in the mind sometimes.Fisher Price is doing exactly what they
should be doing, and ofcourse even if it is not saying that all there
going to do is apologize and offer to fix the problem.Thats all they
are rquired to do and all they should do.Even if that is what the doll
says it is not meant to breed hate into people.By you reacting the way
you did about something like that goes to show how much hate there
still is.Isn't that what you your husband is fighting for,our freedom?
I am not saying that it is right,I don't think a doll should say that
but to behonest the kids aren't the ones who would notice it or even
know what it would mean it is the parents who notice and make
something bigger than what it is. People have the right to believe in
what they want it is called freedom of religon but they should never
push it on to someone eles.Either get the doll fixed like they offered
or get rid of it, there isn't anything eles you can do about it.

This was bothering me, so I did a "Virgin Ears" test.
I had my family listen to the audio clip from Snopes without telling
them ANY background whatsoever.
My dad thought it was saying "Gotta Light?" and my mom heard nothing.
Once I revealed the controversy, my mom then heard it, and my dad was
still confused.

However I heard "Islam is the light" the first time.

I think someone interpreted it wrong, word spread, and when you are
listening for it, you hear it.

Additionally, "Light" is the only distinct word. "Islam" is very
garbled.

I wonder if you can test the dolls before opening them... I'm sure it
won't be a job people would like doing, but... FP is going to lose a
lot of money off of this one in my opinion.

Then again if they have any serial numbers on the dolls, perhaps they
can figure out what series was tampered with.

And out of curiosity when did you purchase the doll?... I ask because
I did a quick check and Fox News had an article about it - from back
in early October.

let my daughters play with the doll! I am just upset with the fact
that this got through quality control and even if it is not saying
that then how come someone did not catch the simularities in the
saying? come on now i did not hear of this doll saying "Islam is the

person on "Dont you know there are marines who are Muslims too" Yes i
know that there are different religions where ever you go but unless
it is says clearly on the package that the toy says religous statments
then it would not be such a big deal. however i am sure if someone
practices a certain religion they would not appreciate their child
getting a toy that has statements about another religion that they do
not believe in! am i right? I am not trying to be mean and ask for

Ummm... from the line "Wal-Mart ,Target and K-Mart pulled all of these

that they are doing the right thing and correcting it.

Your complaint should be with Meijer for not checking with the
manufacturer for updates, or when they are received not acting on
them.

How long ago was this doll purchased? I heard about this months ago,
actually from Snopes.com, the article on it was published back in
October. I highly doubt the doll was saying anything about any
religion, and really, why would Fisher-Price make their dolls say
anything about Islam, or Christianity, etc, but people will hear what
they want to hear.

It's funny what we convince ourselves we are hearing.

My friend's daughter got a Baby Alive Go Bye-Bye. My friend's name is
Melissa. She is convinced that one of the doll's phrases is
"Mel-iss-a". She thought maybe the gift-giver programmed the doll as a
joke. But no, it came that way. I ended up getting my daughter that
same doll for Christmas, and hers says the same thing. I don't know
what it is; I'm sure it's probably not "Melissa", but I can't figure
out what it is because my mind has convinced my ears that it is
"Melissa".

They are "bucking up". They offered to replace the chip. I don't
understand what more you want from them. Do you want them to send
someone to the house to do it?

How did it happen? I highly doubt a CSR is going to have the answer
to that. Perhaps it was someone on the assembly lines idea of a joke.
I'm sure FP is investigating it.

You do know there are Marines who are Muslims, right?

by Casmly Posted Fri December 26, 2008 @ 10:15 AM

I've listened to the doll on UTube and it's pretty darned clear that
the doll is saying "in the light". The first word is a bit less
clear, but you would think with all of the quality control that should
go into making these dolls someone would have caught the similarity to
the phrase "Islam is the light.".

Even if nobody caught on to this, why was the phrase "in the light"
even used? (I realize that others heard other things. But I've had
two children myself, coos and sounds work just as well for baby
babbling.) If this truly was supposed to be baby babble, why not come
up with completely random sounds and phrases?

As for the Snopes website, where are they getting their information
from to debunk this urban legend?? From the company who made the
dolls. Uh, of course they are going to say that this is all a big
misunderstanding, even if it wasn't. Would you want to be the one to
come out and admit that an employee of yours may have slipped
something on to these chips you were unaware of? Or that your quality
control missed something like this?

Even if that were what the doll was saying, there's nothing wrong with
it being put into a children's toy.

There would be something wrong with putting it, or any other religious
saying, into a children's toy and not labeling it so that people who
do not want their child to have a doll that says "Islam is the light"
or "Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior or burn in Hell for
all eternity" or "Do what you like so long as nobody else is harmed"
or whatever else do not accidentally end up giving their child a doll
that says that. In a nation where we all have the right to our own
beliefs about deities and about humanity's purpose on the Earth and
where different people use that right in different ways, we should not
have to worry about our children being proselytized to by toys if we
don't want them to be.

And I would think that your husband, being a Marine, would grasp that.
This is, of course, the very sort of thing he is asked to risk his
life to defend.

But in any case, that's not what the doll says, and Fisher Price is
going to replace the chip to ensure that your child doesn't have to
hear something that might sound to her like someone who is different
from her being proud of who they are.

If I had kids, though, and there were dolls out there that spoke well
of religions they weren't learning at home, I would be inclined to go
out and get some. That wouldn't be the end of my responsibility to
prepare my children to live in a pluralistic world, but it would be a
start.

Good luck with the new chip.

This was on the news (our local stations had this on right after
Thanksgiving)and FP did state they are willing to replace the chips.

If this does not satisfy you then throw the doll away and buy your
daughter something else.

I agree that it does kind of sound like that's what they are saying.
The dolls have three recordings and one of them sounds like what you
are saying.

However, I think someone must have told you about the phrase before
you were able to "hear" it.

I help set up the toy shop in my store. Those dolls are motion
activated so they were going off all the time. I listened to them go
off for hours and hours, day after day, and NEVER did I hear "Islam is
the Light."

It was only AFTER I watched a news broadcast about this and then came
to work and tried it out that I was able to "hear" the message.

I, personally, thought it was funny and my co-workers did too. But did
any of them "hear" the message before I told them? No, they didn't.

It's all psychological, really.

And the message isn't a hate message either.

Personally, I think the dolls are ugly and annoying and if I was a
little girl, I wouldn't be interested in them anyways.

Yeah, it sort of sounds like it. It also sort of sounds like "Oh ham

Snopes disproved it, give it a rest.

A question, however. Why would a marine be particularly offended by a

The doll doesn't say "Islam is the light". You say you reserched the
internet - that research reveals the doll doesn't actually say that.
Some people think that it does. If you think about it, a doll saying
"Islam is the light" in English doesn't make any sense, unless this is
part of some diabolical plot. I wonder what your daughter would say
the doll says. I listened to the recording and it sounds like
unintelligibile gobbldygook.

Take Prop 8 in California and the other similar gay marriage bans
across the country.

That is *actively* legislating hate into the government. The one where
a separation of church and state should be. Christianity says it's a
sin, but not all gays are Christian so why should they have to follow
ONE religion's "ideals"?

Those Christians that disagree with Prop 8, most are silent. Those who
silently accept the hate are also a part of it, in your words.

And with more extreme fundamental Christians, such as the Westboro
Baptist Church (of the "God hates f*gs "fame") or those believing the
Earth is 6000 years old, I have yet to see a Christian organization
speak out against those views.

But back to my example, I wouldn't call those who agree with Prop 8
"terrorists", but actively legislating AGAINST the rights of
individuals based on a societal label is morally and ethically wrong.

P.S. I have seen Muslims speak out against the extremist facet of
their religion. But more need to speak up.
