Disney Opened its Heart and Won Mine
Posted Tue February 17, 2009 12:00 pm, by L B. written to DisneyWorld (Orlando, FL)
Write a Letter to this Company
Two years ago, my husband and I were married in Disneyworld, Orlando, on October 1, 2007. Disney was not our first choice for a wedding, but your choice to allow gay and lesbian couples to have commitment ceremonies, as well as your overall attitude towards the gay community, tipped the scales in your favour.
Although we are a straight couple, it was important to us to get married in a place where everyone felt welcome, regardless of sexual orientation or beliefs. We spent part of our honeymoon in Disney as well, and during that time we met a gay couple who felt comfortable enough to hold hands, hug, and be affectionate without fear. They were extraordinarily nice guys who said they had been treated with kindness and openness from your staff, and it meant a lot to me to see them so happy to be able to enjoy this vacation together. We also met a lesbian couple wearing matching bride tiaras who had had their ceremony earlier in the week and had nothing but good things to say about the experience.
I know not everyone feels the same way I do, but for me this is just another example of the way Disney SHOULD be; somewhere that is open for everyone to enjoy themselves and be with their loved ones. As always, the level of service and friendliness of the staff was exceptional, and it made our wedding and honeymoon all the more wonderful. Thank you for opening your hearts to people of all beliefs and lifestyles, and we will continue to visit as long as you do.

Okay. I'll be the first to say I really don't like Disney, but I applaud them for keeping the rights of ALL citizens in mind.

I think Disney is impressive for a variety of reasons and you just outlined yet one more.
I found it sad to learn that Disney currently needs to slice staffing down. I have a Disney trip planned this summer and am wondering what ramifications there will be with limited staff with the cut backs.
Thank you for sharing...it will be just another thing to appreciate about Disney when I am there this summer :)

Thank you for letting Disney know of your satisfaction. They have always been a great company in my eyes and this is just another piece of cake.

Great letter, thanks for taking the time to let Disney know your thoughts and feelings and also for sharing it with us. If only more people were as kind as yourself and Disney the world would truly be a better place.

Great letter...there's a Methodist Church in my neighborhood that has a sign "Until all can get married here, none will be married here"

I will add my thank you for sharing that to the list. So much negative information is spread about gay people these days it's disheartening. I'm so glad to see some people recognize that being gay doesn't make you a bad person. We live and love like anyone else. I too love Disney, and think getting married there would be a wonderful experience.

Nice letter. Thanks for sharing it!
As one that has attended Gay Days in past years at Disney I find your letter extra nice.

I tried to talk my dads into a Disney wedding, but for some reason they didn't take the bait ;) Many warm wishes to an obviously devoted ally in the struggle for equal rights.

I'm a big fan of Disney, and this is just one more reason that I am.
Based on the arguments I hear against gay marriage, and homosexuality in general, I'm guessing that these men that you met were naked, having sex in the middle of the Magic Kingdom, and preying on children.
Oh, no? They weren't?
Hmmm... That must mean that homosexuals aren't bad people.
Imagine that.

the Salvation Army. We found out a few years ago that they will not even let a gay VOLUNTEER for them. They wont take donations from openly gay people either. Since we found that out we have not donated a penny to them. And wont ever.

Gee I always was under the impression the Salvation Army was like a Christian based organization. I guess allot of people are in for a surprise when they meet their maker. I'll never donate another dime to them! Thanks for sharing that.
