Just Brakes Leaves You Just Broke

Posted Wed March 4, 2009 12:00 pm, by L.M C. written to Just Brakes

Write a Letter to this Company

I took my car to Just Brakes for new brakes that were advertised for $99. The mechanic showed me the rear brake pistons, pushed back the rubber seals to reveal a few drops of brake fluid, & declared that the pistons were bad and brake fluid was just "pouring out." He let me know that all would have to be replaced including the front pistons, the pads, rotors, & drums. When I refused & stated I just wanted the pads replaced for $99 he let me know that it "just wouldn't be safe" & refused to do the service. They quoted me $300. My car was already dismantled & I was afraid to drive it without the work so I agreed to get it done. I left the car at the shop cuz they said it'd be a few hours before it'd be done. After I left I got a call saying that they found a few more issues & the repairs would cost a little over $400. I wasn't happy about it but agreed to have it done, after being told they couldn't do the brakes if I didn't have the work done & they weren't able to reassemble the car without these repairs.

They called me to pick up my vehicle & told me the total was over $1000. I argued with the man over the phone for a good 15 minutes about the cost & he lowered the price to $900, then $800, then $700 then $750... All the way to $550. Upon returning to pick up the vehicle the cashier told me the total was $650. I argued with the man even though he assured me he was giving me such a great deal & he could loose his job for doing it but wasn't getting anything accomplished except more & more upset so I paid it.

A week later my car starting making some horrible screeching noises & not properly braking. It got so bad that I felt it wasn't drivable so I had it towed into a local shop where they inspected the cars brakes system. I was told that the noise was caused by the rear brakes had been reassembled incorrectly & this caused additional damage. After paying stupid Just Brakes $650 I had to spend another $800 to fix what they screwed up!!!

I'd like the company to refund my money I paid for the service & repairs and also be reimbursed for the cost I paid to have their errors fixed.

I really don't think you should have towed it to another shop. Even
if the first shop did more work than you wanted and you felt bad about
demanding a reduction in price, ulimatly they must honor their
warranty. They cannot do that if you don't give them a chance.

Secondly, cars are complicated and so it is common for people to think
they are getting taken advantage of because they mechanic may be
talking over their head. There are also dishonest mechanics who do
take advantage of the situation. I personally worked for a Jiffy Lube
ten year ago and it was simply awful watching my coworkers sell
customers things they did not need. Sometimes the customers wouldn't
even get the service they paid for because the tech new they didn't
need it anyway so why do the service. It was just sad.

With that said, I think your right to to suspect they were wrongful
because they told you that you could not leave the shop without this
service. That it is a pressure tactic that is unlawful in Washington
State because it violates the consumer protection act.
There maybe simular laws in your state so you may want to notify the
local DA and file a small claim suit.

I would never take my car to a mechanic unless it was a last resort.
They always tell you that you need more done to the car than is
actually necessary. That is how they rip people off. If I were you, I
would go to Autozone and buy some new brakes then replace them myself.
It's much cheaper and exactly as effective (if not more). My father
taught me a lot about cars growing up and I took it upon myself to
learn basic repairs to be spared the unnecessary mistreatment that
most mechanics give.

The automotive repair industry has no regulation, so we consumers are
on our own. Something like Angie's List for your area could be
invaluable when it comes to car repairs and finding a reputable,
ethical mechanic.

I recommend that you find a local garage that is not part of a chain.
I recently needed an alignment done on my vehicle, and received a
coupon for Midas (Chain). I was told that they would inspect my
vehicle, and let me know if anything was broken, because they will not
complete the work I wanted if anything else happened to be not
satisfactory...
I took it to a local garage next to the hotel where I work and they
did it no questions asked.

Chain places are a money grab.

Whenever I take my car in for work... they give me a quoted price, but
... if the price is going to end up being more than that, by their own
policy they had to call me to let me know.

oh but that was sears. and they always gave me good service

yeah, i'd say that sounds suspicious... and i'd suggest contacting
someone about it... not just planet feedback, but perhaps some legal
entity

and... just because you're car is dismantled does not mean you're
required to get service there.

I took my car in once for an inspection... i forget where, but my car
failed. the store quoted me over $300 to get it fixed and I said no.

Pricy auto place: You'll get a "rejection" stick on your inspection.
Me: That's fine.

(the sticker basically meant i could go home, to a repair store, or to
an inspection station.. and no where else)

I left that place and drove directly to Sears (the same sears i always
went to). They fixed it for almost half the price. I picked it up
and drove to a new inspection station and passed.

Always shop around. Yes I know sometimes you feel like you're stuck,
but... don't let them corner you. Also... sometimes it's better to go
with a bigger chain that has a better reputation.

or one with a good word-of-mouth rep.

had another repair shop I use to go to because it was literally across
the road from where i once worked. Drop it off in the morning, then
pick it up after work... and everyone at work praised the shop. And
yes, it was good work, and cheaper than the dealer.

I think this is a great story for one of your local television
stations to do a consumer report on.
Also if you can prove from the second place that Just Brakes did not
properly repair or fix your vehicle then you can take them to small
claims court. I would do this ASAP if you do not hear from them or
they do not refund your money.

Please keep in touch with PFB regarding this issue. It will be
interesting to see how Just Brakes handles this or if they choose to
ignore your complaint.

Here in Vegas one of the local news channels did an investigation on
Just Brakes and determined that they suggest extra work where it is
not needed. They have a ton of complaints on the net too. Check it out

I'd be complaining to the BBB and maybe call your local news station.

I think some of you are missing the bigger picture. The OP isn't
complaining because she/he didn't get the brake job for $99. They are
complaining because this place claimed that all this work needed to be
done on the car, quoted her/him $300, then had the audacity to try and
charge $1000 when the work was complete. Which isn't even the case
since the assembly was done incorrectly. I would like to have seen
what this place would have done if the OP told them to reassemble the
car that she/he was going for an additional quote. I have a feeling
they would have been fed a line similar to "I'm sorry, we can't let
you drive off the lot in good conscience". Most people can demise
from this letter that this shop isn't on the up and up and is just
looking to make a quick buck off of those individuals who don't know
any better.

Just Brakes makes it sounds like this company specializes in what it
does. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like that is what you would
expect.

You might also file a complaint with the BBB. A lot of people don't
believe in using them, but I have had luck.

Is that Just Brakes seems to specialize in something, but it isn't
doing brake work.

Personally, I would have stopped the work right away and gone
somewhere else. Also, they quoted you a price, but then changed it on
you many times. I would be furious. They then messed all of that
expensive work up, to top it off.

This place has the foul aroma of a shop that's not on the up and up.
I do not know them, but will never forget the name if ever do run
across them. What a sad company, I feel bad for your experience.

Dude, the only way that Just Brakes will fix brakes for $99, is if you
buy a BRAND NEW car from a dealer. and then drive that BRAND NEW car
straight to Just Brakes. A friend told me that he took his truck in
for the $99 repairs and they treid to tell him that he need $1,000
worth of repairs.

I hear this commerical all the time and I pay attention to it.

The 99 dollars is for replacing the pads on all 4 wheels and
resurfacing the rotors. The commercial even states that additional
work could be substantial. They use the word "substanstial"!! That is
a clue, most cases will be substantial.

As the commerical goes: Why do you do it Just Brakes? At just brakes
we really dooooooooo care!!

Good Day
