that's why i got a handheld garmin instead
it's not cheap, but... it's a one-time purchase for the unit. after that, i can check my location as much as I want without paying for anything except the electricity to run it.
and, i've been told it's more accurate than the phone GPS apps

For whatever it's worth, I agree with you. Consumers can sometimes be their own worst enemies. I wholeheartedly believe in feedback and have been communicating with companies since I was a child, long before the internet made it so easy. Too often today's consumer just wants a quick fix instead of being proactive and taking responsibility for their actions in the first place. I've seen the change in customer service over the years (many years), and I believe most of it has been caused by the consumer, with the internet playing a major role. I agree that feedback is essential, but if companies gave in to every demand being made these days, it wouldn't take long for consumers to find themselves with less and less options as more businesses go under. I know I've said it many times on here, but customer service has to be a two-way street. The key to feedback is in the presentation, just as the key to customer service is in the company's response. When those two things are done properly, everyone walks away satisfied. The consumer may not get exactly what they want, but at least they'll know they've been heard.

The contract has nothing to do with the device I am using.
VZW has been getting better over the last couple of years with listening to complaints from customers. They used to cripple bluetooth on their phones as well. You could only use it to pair with a headset. You couldn't send pictures or files or anything like that via bluetooth. They really had no reason for doing it. They weren't making any money by doing it. They just did it. Finally, they received enough negative feedback from customers and stopped doing it.
VZW only has one reason for locking the GPS and that is because they push VZ Navigator so much. It's all profit for them so it makes sense for them to do this. They just need to realize that not everyone has a reason to use VZ Navigator. It's a pretty decent product. I used a trial of it once when I was lost on the road. I have no use for it anymore and neither do a lot of other.

the consumer knew about the GPS issue long before buying this phone. The choice should have been made before the purchase not after.

I am a Verizon customer and know that Verizon does lock out a lot of features that are built into the phone by the manufacture. The even put their own screens and menus on the phones. So someone with Razr phone with another carrier has a much different UI (the manufactures) than I do on my phone (Verizon's UI). They do lock out the GPS functionality on many phones so you have to buy the VZ Navigator and pay $9.99/month instead of using google maps for free.
It really doesn't matter if the OP knew about this beforehand or not. It something he doesn't like about Verizon and as a customer (probably locked in a contract) he has the right the express his concern.

I'm assuming you were aware of these limitations when you purchased the phone?

It is selfish of them. So what? They are a business. That's how business works.
If you don't like it, then you should certainly stop giving them your money. If enough people stop giving VW business, then maybe they'll change this.

Adam..you know they are not going to do this no matter how many people ask. NYC is so easy to find your way around, you don't need any of that!
