Macy's Did Not Refund the Sales Tax on My Return

For my Birthday my friend purchased and gave me a Macy's card with a $25 total. I used it about three weeks ago to buy a jar of Clinique lotion. They didn't have the correct lotion for oily skin, but they were running the "free gift with purchase," so the Sales Associate told me to buy the one for normal skin and she would make me a small sample jar of the correct lotion, and then she would order me the correct lotion, and call me when it came in. I would still receive the free gift, and return the wrong lotion when she ordered the correct lotion.

Well a week passed by and I did not like the jar of sample lotion she made for me, I thought it was too heavy for my skin. I returned to Macy's promptly with the unopened jar of the wrong lotion, and the free gift I had received since I had been told I would need to return it used or not!

Anyway I went in, and the lady was helping other people. I waited patiently with my Mom to return the lotion. When it came time to return it she informed me I would not receive the full amount I paid back ($46.98 or something like that). I asked her why and she said she didn't know! Well I informed her that I paid half giftcard half cash. I wanted all cash back, or at least my original cash payment back. She informed me she could not do this and she could only put it back on a gift card. I told her I didn't want $38 back on the gift card, I wanted my original payment of half cash back, and then the original amount of the gift card back! She said no she couldn't do that. I asked to see a manager and she ignored me and went to help other customers. I tried to find another Sales Associate to help me but there were none around. After another 20 minutes I finally caves and got my $38 of $46.98 back.

Macy's decided to keep my tax! I am NOT happy about this. It was an unopened jar of lotion, and the unused gift back, why would I not get the full amount of my money back?

I have never had this happen to me before in the State of Washington. Every time I return something I expect my exact amount I originally paid back! Why wouldn't they give me my tax back!? Also, why did the Sales Associate flat out refuse to get a manager?

I would like my $6 back, and I would like my now $23 (originally $25) cashed out back to cash because I plan to never ever shop at Macy's again!

Hmmm, did you ever ask for a manger? What part of Washington State do
you live in that charges over 15% sales tax?

I am having a similar experience. I made an online purchase of $122.
$75 was a gift card. $47 was put on my credit card. I returned $44
of merchandise. There was some weird formula and I received $29 back
on my gift card, and $18 on my credit card. When I asked why I
couldn't received the $44 back on my credit card, she just replied the
machine/register won't let her...and pretty it is what it is. I had
seen some skirts, so I figured I won't argue. I bought two skirts,
used my $29 and another $25 of my own money. NOW....I noticed one of
the original blouses I ordered online is faulty....and am heading back
to return it. I don't want to deal with their crap of putting this
blouse back on the gift card. So I plan on bringing EVERYTHING
BACK...even the skirts....and just buying back what I want to keep.
If they give me any crap, I will contact corporate headquarters and
BITCH. I worked at another retailer's hq for YEARS---and this is not
right. If you have the original receipt and the return receipt, make
copies and make a call to their district manager. It is wrong for
them to not give you the tax money. And technically, you should have
been given back your FULL AMOUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even here in Cleveland, where the stupid sales tax is 8 freaking
percent, tax on less than $50 should never be $6.

I'm wondering if the clerk charged you $6 for the "sample" and since
you used it and failed to return it, they didn't refund it.

I also wonder if you returned it with the receipt. Sometimes when a
return is done without the receipt, they only refund you what the
lowest sales price in the past 90 days was. Esp. since you mention
they put more on a gift card than you initially had on it, makes me
wonder if that's what happened. A receipt would have clearly shown
you paid half in cash and half on that gift card.

And why did you give in and accept that refund if you did, in fact,
have proof of what the original sale was? I would never have done
that if I had my receipt with me.

But it really doesn't help your cause to demand they refund your money
as you wish after you've told them you will "never ever shop at Macy's
again!" What's the point of helping a customer who will never come
back?

Next time, tell them "if they don't" you will "never ever shop at
Macy's again," but never before they have a chance to make it right.

It's impossible to charge for a sample at Macy's. by Maegan Z. Mon May 11, 2009 @ 2:51 PM

I had this EXACT same problem at Macy's last month. I purchased 4
items for $88.96. I paid for the order with a gift card that had a
balance of $12.72 and I paid the remaining amount of $76.24 on my
credit card. I decided to return 2 items totaling $44.48. I was
expecting the total amount of the return to be credited back to my
credit card since it was less than my total charge. I was very
disappointed when only $37.81 was refunded to my card and $6.67 was
put on a Macys gift card. Apparently my return was pro-rated, despite
the fact that I was returning less than my total charge amount.

I also questioned the cashier and a manager who simply informed me
that there was nothing they could do.

I contacted Macy's via their website and received a prompt response
from an associate -- a very personalized response and not a form
letter at all. They cancelled the gift card that had been reissued to
me and put the balance back on my credit card. Luckily for me, the
original purchase had been online so they had my credit card
information on file.

This may not be the case for you, but hopefully they can help you out
as well.

The problem created here likely is similar to when my mom buys me
something in Iowa (where clothing is taxed) and I return it here in
Minnesota (where clothing is not taxed). The cashier always has to do
something special (and has to look it up and it takes time) in order
to refund the Iowa state sales tax to me. It's a big pain in the
butt. I don't know how/whether they can make it easier, but with
internet orders and interstate commerce, you'd think they'd have
figured out something by now.

$6 tax? That sounds awfully high.

At any rate, I believe they're required by LAW to return the sales tax
to you.

I can understand, I suppose, if the refund must be on a gift card, but
why wouldn't she get a manager before turning to help other customers?
That seems rather rude.
