Hulu has blocked Skyfire users from its site!

Posted Wed July 1, 2009 12:00 pm, by Adam W. written to Hulu

I recently learned that Hulu has blocked Skyfire users from it's website. I am very upset over this and do not see any reason for it. Why discriminate against browsers? This should be illegal.

I will no longer be visiting the Hulu website.

Skyfire uses proxies, most websites do not like proxies (for a number
of reasons, especially those that make money from advertising).

It is more likely that Hulu blocked the popular proxies instead of
just Skyfire.

I tested Hulu with a few free proxies and none of them would play the
videos there.

Also, should discrimination against certain browsers actually become
illegal I would seriously fear for the direction of this nation.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. Hulu has done this on purpose. by Adam W. Thu July 2, 2009 @ 1:27 AM

...isn't Hulu's. While I have no doubt that Hulu has done some active
to "block" Skyfire, I can't find a single mention at Hulu that they
have "done this on purpose."

As an aside, I tried this on my mobile device. Didn't work. Perhaps
Hulu should be required, by law, to work on any device, regardless of
whether or not that device supports Flash. I mean, why are they
requiring me to use an Adobe product only? That seems a whole lot
worse than their not supporting Skyfire.

Hulu also no longer works with a program called MediaCatcher. Perhaps
there should be a law against blocking this software from being used?

I sympathize. And I'm pretty pro-regulation. But I fail to see why
Hulu not supporting a particular browser should be illegal. The
analogy to net neutrality doesn't work.

besides... browsers are free, it's not like it's going to cost
anything to use two browsers.

i specifically use safari for my regular work, but i also use firefox
because uploading to my college's page just doesn't work well on any
other browser.

in fact one of my x boyfriends found a site that blocked all computers
except amigas

can't say it's a sound business practice but unless it's a government
site it's pretty much legal.

It should be challenged though by Adam W. Thu July 2, 2009 @ 1:29 AM

No violation of any law whatsoever. by PepperElf Fri July 3, 2009 @ 4:47 PM

but it goes against what net neutrality is all about by Adam W. Sun July 5, 2009 @ 4:40 PM
