UPS is not doing their job!

My mother had a package delivered via UPS. Most drivers toss it over into her back patio or put it in a little closet near her front door (she lives in a condo). This driver left it on her front step and someone stole it. She filed a claim not being bitter but because that's what she was instructed to do by the UPS lady who answered the phone. She has used UPS for years and years and never had an issue until this one time.

Since that time when this UPS driver delivers instead of tossing the package on the patio or putting it in the closet he requires signature or he wont leave it. My mom works from 7am-8pm and is NEVER home when they come to deliver. Never has been, never will be. So she gets notices saying signature required will try again. They try again she's not there. She called to complain and ask them to please just toss over the patio. Their solution was to tell her to have the packages rerouted to her work which is really frowned on by her company. She did however do this for a few months but recently UPS has instituted a $4 fee per reroute which is obscene. This not delivering without signature includes packages on perishables for which she's paid high shipping fees for quick delivery. How is this legal? They are basically over charging her for something she's already paid for and sometimes refusing to do their jobs by not delivering the package they've been paid to deliver. Calling UPS is no help as the woman always tells her that it's up to the driver whether he requires signature or not.

What can we do to stop this nonsense?

UPS needs to deliver the packages as they are paid to do by either leaving it on the back patio or in the closet.

Wow!
One day after receiving my message through planetfeedback, my mother
received a message from UPS that from now on they will deliver
packages onto her back patio without requiring a signature!

I cannot thank you enough for fixing this situation for her. This is
such a huge load off of her mind!

If I worked 12-hour days five days a week and my company "frowned" on
having personal packages sent to me at work, I'd ignore that frown and
tell 'em where to shove their asinine policy. And I"d get that
package sent to me at work.

It sounds like your mom is being punished for filing the claim. I
agree that it's not right, but I'm not sure what you can do about it.
Maybe this letter will actually help straighten it out.

Your mother is not in control. She needs to play by UPS rules, or use
another shipper. It is really that simple. I live in the boondocks,
so I have had to learn how to use UPS. I have, and everything works
very well, described below.

It is not the driver's choice to require a signature. If the shipper
(sender) says a signature is not required, then the driver can leave
the package if nobody is home. But if a signature is required by the
sender, the driver can't leave it.

One time in my life, a package disappeared. It was from LL Bean. I
called Bean, and they said "Ok, that is fine. We don't require UPS to
get a signature, so someone must have taken it. We will just send
another one."

You have several choices. There is no need to do a "reroute," your
mother can simply have the package sent to her work address from the
start. I have done this many times in my life, and it worked great.
If this is frowned upon by her company, choice #2:

Have the package sent to the UPS hub in c/o her name. Instruct the
shipper to write "Hold for pickup" on the box, and a telephone number.
I have done this several times, and it also works great. If this is
not acceptable, choice #3:

Use online tracking, and be at home! This also works very reliably.
If this is no good, choice #4:

Use somebody else.

You can't call the shots with UPS. It doesn't work that way.

I understand what you're saying but again with her hours, stopping by
to visit the hub isn't possible either.

And the companies she orders from often do not ship any other way than
UPS. I've told her to ship to work but again, company policy frowns on
personal packages being delivered to work. Some places are more
tolerant than the company she works for.

She can't be at home for package delivery, that's my point. All they
have to do is toss it over the fence and be done, but like the other
poster said they're punishing her for filing the claim. Period. The
companies she orders from ARE NOT the ones requiring signature, it is
UPS. They stated tonight it is their policy if you file a claim that
your packages from then on require signature.
